Greetings listers
I would like you all to give a warm welcome to
new member Jacqueline Douglas whose grandfather was
BERTIE (ALbert/Bertie/Bertrum?) BURLISON (b. August 23, 1880)
Jacqueline is fairly certain Bertie is related closely
to John Chant BURLISON
Bertie told Jacqueline that his parents had died when he
was a boy and he and his sister had been raised by an aunt.
MMM this seems a familiar story here. Bertie went to BC.
British Columbia in Canada I think this means. Do we have
a Orphan connection with a sister going to Canada maybe?
Bertie also said his brothers are really his cousins. This
looks similar to Chant family details by a illigetemate affair of Jane Chant
to her sister Fanny's husband where brothers would really be cousins also
the illegitamate boy also went to Canada Mmm. Some intriguing similarities
to
some details but others dont match.
A 1940's document where her grandfather (Bertie)
indicated he was born in London.
Her grandfather also told her that his brother (Jack) was killed by a stray
bullet in San Francisco, US of A around
the turn of the century. John Chant Burlison turns up in Victoria B.C.,
Canada in the 1901 Census. He is still in
Victoria in the 1902 Henderson's City Directory, then he disappears from the
records.
John C Burlison and her grandfather seem to have emigrated
to B.C. at about the same time, and given that she has found no other
Burlisons in B.C. even to the present day (except for the grandfather's
son), she suspects John Chant Burlison might, be a close relative - possibly
even her grandfather's
brother/cousin (Jack) who was shot in San Francisco.
Not finding her grandfather on the GRO, Jacqueline has
begun to suspect Bertie's birth surname may have been
other than Burlison, and is wondering whether he was
actually a Chant.
Another intriguing little snippet is the naming pattern.
In the London 1881 Census there is a sister-in-law living with John Chant
Burlison's parents (John Burlison and
Mary Ann Chant Burlison), named Fannie Jessie Louise
Chant. Grandfather, Bertie, named his first female child Jessie, and a
grandaughter's middle name is Louise. There
is not a living soul to ask where those names arose in the female relatives,
so at this point Jacqueline is wondering whether they came from the Chants.
I am interested if anyone with Hampshire, London or
Wiltshire lines see some familiar info in these details.
Maybe others know how Bertie connects to John Chant
Burlison? I'm sure Jacqueline and the list would love to
hear ideas on possible connections.
regards
Michael Cheeseman
