Hello Listers
I have that Keith listed the wife of Robert 1814 as Mary daughter of Joanna
Fowler and they married about 1838.
On Free BMD there is a Robert Chant getting married in the Yeovil District in
the quarter ending June 1838. The only Mary listed in the same place and
quarter is Mary Solway.
I can't find a Fowler or Solway marriage that would support a name change for
Joanna on Free BMD (but that only starts with 1837), on Duncan Weir's website
(
http://www.genealogyhelp.co.uk/Main_Menu/index.htm) or on the
Norton-sub-Hamdon database
(
http://mum202-2.musm.ttu.edu/Norton/surnames.html). Joanna is shown to have
been born in Norton, as below.
The 1851 CDR from Gordon Beavington shows this Middle Chinnock family:
CHANT Robert 37 Thatcher Guernsey
Mary 33 Middle Chinnock, Som.
Jane Anna 12 Glover Middle Chinnock, Som.
Ishmael 8 Middle Chinnock, Som.
Ann 6 Scholar Middle Chinnock, Som.
George 9m Middle Chinnock, Som.
FOWLER Joanna Mother in Law Widow 70 Pauper - Ag. Lab. Norton Sub Hamdon
It may be of interest that this is the family living next door:
CHANT Ishmael 33 Farmer 15 Acres West Chinnock, Som.
Harriet 31 Wife Hinton St. George. Som.
George Father Widow/er 79 Retired Farmer West Chinnock, Som.
This looks like Robert's father and brother, although, I believe that Keith
has the wife in this case as Hannah nee Trask.
There is nothing yet on Free BMD for this marriage although there is an
Ishmael Chant marriage in the Yeovil registration district in the June 1867
quarter where a Priscilla Trask is shown in the same quarter. This seems to
be Robert and Mary's son who later also marries Mary Ann Adams, Yeovil
registration district in the December 1883 quarter. A Priscilla Chant is
shown as deceased in the quarter to March 1877.
There are no Ishmaels in the 1901 census as far as I can see.
Hope this helps a little. Mary is probably Solway and mother Joanna remarried
afterwards. It will have to wait until someone can look it up!
Cheers,
John
