Dear Listers, Has no one ever had a Chant go to Texas? I'm looking for William N.
Chant born about 1830 in England, who came to Texas , married Martha M. Connell who was
only 13 or 14 at the time (about 1865) sired 6 children (whose names I have) and died or
disappeared before 1880. William N. Chant was my greatgreatgrandfather, lived in Coryell
County, Texas during the 1870 Census. We cannot find out his origin other than England
as listed in the Census. I posted this a couple of weeks ago, but received only one
response, a question of the legality of such a young marriage. Well, it was in Texas in
the early days of settlement, and the marriage of very young girls was not unusual.
Martha M. Connell Chant later married Cody Brown Roberts, had 7 more children and lived to
be a very old lady. Thanks. Please look for a Texas among all those Chants. Sincerely,
Roberta
