G'Day List
mmm, interesting Period in English History.
Dont think anyone can claim him unless you can locate evidence of his place
of origin in some
form of record.
William Chant was obviously an Archer for a Naval Expedition in 1378 under
command of my ancestral
cousin John of Gaunt 1st Duke of Lancaster. John was the 3rd surviving son
of King Edward III.
Interestingly it is now thought Henry IV father was actually a Archer in the
Royal Court in France
rather than the Royal father claimed. A suggestion first espoused by Richard
III, in recent times a
find in the French church proves Henry IV was concieved while his mother's
husband was away at War.
So it would appear the position of Archer could mean close association with
High Royals.
So therefore Margaret Plantagenant wife of Henry Tudor was not a legitimate
Heir and Richard III
was right in his claim. No wonder my ancestor John Howard 1st Duke of
Norfolk fought on side of
King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
John of Gaunt (born in Gaunt now called Belgium) in the summer of 1378, he
commanded an attack
on St Malo, which through no fault of his failed. ST-MALO was originally in
the Middle Ages a
fortified island at the mouth of the Rance, controlling not only the estuary
but the open sea
beyond. France at this time was claimed as English territory under the
premise that William the
conqueror was also Duke of Normandy and through the Queens of England that
were daughters to the
French Kings.
Does anyone know how someone with the rank of archer was supported/payed
with regards equipment,
payment of wages, food etc? Did our poor fellow William Chant the Archer
survive the battle for
St Malo?
As far as I am aware Nationised army's supported by the states taxes did not
yet exist. Finding
out how these soldiers costs were supported may lead to more information on
how to find out where
William might have come from. Survival of Records from the 1300's would be
patchy so if they did
exist in the past they may no longer do so now. It would be a fantasic find
if any record was located
to pinpoint where William Chant was from for sure. It would require research
in Medieval records
for the most part only accessable in various Local Library, County,
National, University and
private archives.

I've just found this entry in the 'Soldier in Medieval England' records on
line from the National Archives at Kew. Anyone claim William Chant, archer,
as their ancestor?
