Hello John,
The family that you mention were living in Watlington, near Henley,
Oxfordshire by 1891. They were the only Chant family in Oxfordshire on
the 1891 census. They sure moved around this family:
Howe Rd:
James Chant, Head aged 52, retired coachman, born Chichester Sussex
Mary A Chant, wife aged 51, domestic, born Romford, Essex
Ernest Chant, son aged, clerk born Romford
Bertha Chant, daughter aged 19, born Hanover Sq London
I will check on the other sons, Frank and Percy asap. Presumably eldest
daughter Jessie had married by 1891.
Regards,
Sean

Hi Sean and Jacqueline,
The information about Mary Ann being in Hove made me look back at the
1881
census.
Taking the common forenames of this branch into consideration does it
look as
if this is a related group? After all there are Percy, Ernest and
Jessie, and
James comes from West Dean. Apart from Hove being a fashionable
retirement
place there could be family connections that took Mary Ann in that
direction.

What do these people look like in 1891 please Sean? Are there any aunts,
uncles, nieces or nephews living with them to provide further clues?
If the above Percy is the right one I have him born South Ockendon
28-6-1873,
a valet on the 1901 census, living 940, Johnson Street, Victoria,
British
Columbia in 1915, from his enlistment papers, and died on active
service in
France 2-9-1918 from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. My
only worry
in tying up this chap as the 'right' Percy is the difference in
birthplace, as
Romford and South Ockendon are a few miles apart: it depends on the
proximity
of the boundary lines, I suppose.
On the 1901 there is a 36 year old Frank, a builder's clerk, born
Kensington,
living Stoke Newington. 29 year old Bertha from St George's in the East
is a
domestic housemaid in Paddington. James now 62 is in Watlington as a
poultry
farmer and wife Mary aged 61 is shown as having been born in North
Ockendon,
Romford. (Shall I cheer?)
The only 30 year old Jessie born St George's Hanover Square is Jessie
Hughes
who is living with a 71 year old verger in Ealing: obviously I can't
say this
is the right person.
I can't find Ernest who is dead or mistranscribed or abroad; the same
with
Mary's brother, Joseph Finch.
Hope this helps someone.
Cheers,
John
