I would like you all to welcome new member Enid O'Toole. I am sure Janette
Pfeifer
will be especially interested in details described as this is one of her

all the best and happy hunting. MC
Enid has stated:
My husband Kevin O'Toole is a Chant descendant. His great grandfather
being Joseph Chant.
I do not have a lot of details, the majority of my information has been
taken from certificates here in Victoria.
Joseph Chant married Ellen O'Keeffe at Darlingford, Victoria 14th January
1874.
Information on marriage certificate shows that he was a batchelor, age 39
years living at Upper Thornton, Victoria. His birthplace was Somerset,
England. He lists his occupation as a butcher. Parents William Chant and
Maria Follet (William's occupation is also butcher)
Joseph died 18th November 1906 aged 69 years at Darlingford Victoria. His
length of time in Victoria was 50 years. Joseph and Ellen had 9 children.
Joseph was a farmer and noted on his death certificate that his parents were
also farmers. I guess they could possibly be both butchers and farmers.
On the 1881 census I found the following information:
Dwelling: 1 Piddletown
Census Place: Haselbury Plucknett, Somerset, England.
William Chant Ag Lab. Age 80 Birthplace Merriott, Somerset,
England
Maria Chant Wife 80 South
Petherton, Somerset
Jane Chant Granddaughter 15 Haselbury,
Somerset.
I have not followed this up, but could possibly be related.
I have not found Joseph Chant's arrival in Melbourne as yet.
I would like to trace the family back to Somerset and hopefully the Chant
list may have some ideas for me.
Any help is always very much appreciated.
Look forward to hearing from you again,
Regards,
Enid O'Toole
