Hello Listers,
This guy would appear to have derived from Wiltshire. The 1881 census
shows:

The brother Albert Chant is on 1881 census at:

Emma J. CHANT Daur U Female 18 Broad Chalks, Wiltshire,

Albert E. CHANT Son Male 8 Devizes, Wiltshire,
England Scholar
Walter CHANT Son Male 5 St Cross Winchester,

Dwelling :Alresford & Candover Rd
Census Place Swarraton, Hampshire, England
I found the family on the 1871 census at:
Parish of Stratford Subcastle, Wilts.
Henry Chant, Head aged 33, born Broad Chalke, ag lab
Edith Chant, wife aged 30, born ditto
Emma Chant, daughter aged 8, born ditto
Ralph Chant, son 6, born ditto
Edward Chant, son aged 3, born ditto
It looks as though Edward died shortly after the census was taken:
Deaths Jun 1871
Chant Edward 3 Alderbury 5a 124
On the 1891 census, after the departure of Ralph for the US, the family
of Henry Chant are still at Swarraton, Hants:
Henry Chant, Head aged 52, born Broad Chalke, Wilts, domestic servant
gardener
Edith Chant, wife aged 50, born ditto
Albert Chant, son aged 18, born Devizes, Wilts, ag lab
Margaret Chant, son aged 9, born Swarraton, Hants.
Interestingly it appears as the other son Walter Chant aged 14 has moved
to Patcham, Sussex, working for a family called Collis as a domestic
gardener.....as his father is.
On the 1901 census:
Swarraton, Hants:
Henry Chant, Head aged 62, born Broad Chalk, domestic gardener
Edith Chant, wife aged 60, born ditto
Margaret Gertrude Chant, daughter aged 19, born Swarraton, Hants.

Sean

Hello John,
I have found the Ralph Chant you located on the US 1880 census:
Name: Ralph Chant
Arrival Date: 24 Feb 1873
Age: 1859
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Bristol, England
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: England
Ship Name: Great Western
Port of Arrival: New York
The ship's manifest also lists the brother George Chant on it aged 12,
Ralph is 14. They are with the Weare family as they are on the 1880
census.
I will have a look for them on later US census.
As for the Ralph Chant of Hartford, Connec, seems like he definately
arrived 1887. I will look him up on the earlier English census.
Regards,
Sean

Hello John,
Quite an interesting one this. I am not sure if this is the same Ralph
Chant listed below:
1930 US census:
New Britain, Hartford, Connect:
Ralph Chant, Head aged 65, married at 26, born England, migrated 1881
(or 1887 ?), machine inspector
Eliza Chant, wife aged 64, married at 25, born England. migrated 1885
Wilfred Chant, son aged 26, single, born Connec, machinist
I found them again on the 1910 census:
Hartford, Connect
Ralph Chant, Head aged 44, married at 18, born England, migrated 1881,
machinist at lock factory
Eliza Chant, wife aged 44, married at 18, born England, migrated 1885
(return states she has had 8 children, 3 who are deceased)
Leslie Chant, son aged 14, born Connec
Frank Chant, son aged 8 born Connec
Wilfred Chant, son aged 6 born Connect
Albert J Chant, brother aged 37, single, born England, migrated 1872,
machinist
The latter, Albert is interesting, although the date of 1872 for
migration must be wrong given his age of 37 in 1910 ?
On the 1900 census, at New Britain, Hartford:
Ralph Chant, Head aged 345, married at 18, born England, migrated 1881
(although could be 1887), lock maker
Elizabeth Chant, wife aged 34, married at 18, born England, migrated ?
Leslie R Chant, son aged 4, born Conn
Estelle Chant, daughter aged 5 months, born Conn (I am assuming she died
as an infant as not on the 1910 census)
Albert Chant, brother aged 27, born England, migrated 1891.
So did Albert arrive after Ralph ?
Will have to go back to the English census records to check up further I
think.
I wil also try to track down what became of sons Leslie and Frank on the
later US census.
Regards,
Sean
