Hello Listers,
I few weeks back I posted a message regarding Alfred Chant, probably
grandson of James Chant and Mary Cevil of Sherborne. You will recall we
found Alfred and his elder brother John on the 1881 and 1901 census at
St Albans, Their father George Chant bap. 1816 at Sherborne was also
found on the 1881 and 1901 census at Sherborne, but was missing from the
1891 census there.
Well I have not located all on the 1891 census.
20-21 High Street, St Albans:
Alfred Chant, Head, aged 47 born Sherborne, Tobaccanist
Martha Chant, wife aged 51 born Norfolk
George Chant, father, widower, aged 75 born Sherborne, retired gardener
(supported)
George Webster, nephew, aged 29 born Middlesex, tobaccanist assistant
So George's wife Sarah Yeatman, listed as 62 yr old on the 1881 census
died before 1891. George has left Sherborne to live with son Alfred.
However he then returned to Sherborne before 1901. George Webster,
nephew I am assuming is on Alfred's wife side of the family. It is quite
clear now that Alfred and Martha did not have children
Brother John Chant is at:
Portland St, St Albans with his wife Mary. They too were childless.
On the face of it , it seems as if George Chant: 1816-1907 branch may
have died out, however I do not have a full listing of his children,
only his eldest three Mary, John and Alfred. Were there more ? Does
anyone have baptisms for Sherborne from 1844 to the 1850's ?
Regards,
Sean
