Hello Andy and Listers,
I am fairly certain that Charles George Chant b. 1855 Bratton was the
eldest child of John Chant of Bratton and second wife Louisa Chant,
daughter of Charles of Oborne and Louisa Beazely. They are listed on the
1861 census at Sherborne. By 1871 they had moved to Poplar in the
Eastend of London. AS you point out Charles had married by the late
1870's and is listed on the 1881 census at Bromley with a son Alfred H
Chant b. 1879 born Poplar. John Chant presumably died during the 1870's
as Louisa was remarried to William Hutchings duirng 1879 at Poplar. They
are listed on the 1881 census at Poplar. On the 1891 census Charles
George Chant is at Poplar working as a dairyman with wife Harriet Jane
and 8 year old son Edward Ronald L Chant born Poplar. the eldest son
Alfred Henry had died aged 2 years old during 1881. Louisa Hutchings was
still at Poplar on the 1891 census with her husband William, and quite
amazingly her own twice widowed mother Louisa Bussell by now now in her
80's. She died aged 86 at Poplar during 1897. Her daughter Louisa
Hutchings died in Poplar during 1903 aged 73 years old.
Interestingly by 1901 Charles George and family had departed the big
smoke and returned to Dorset, listed on the census return at Wyke Regis,
with Harriet and son Edward. No further details as yet. I wonder if
Edward married and carried the name on ? Any takers ?
Regards,
Sean

Listers,
I hope the following might help.
I have a note of a death date for Charles of Oborne as 6th Jun 1847.
Sorry I've no place or source listed. I've also got a Chrles CHANT d. 2
May 1906 at Sherborne.
From a disc of the 1851 Census of Somerset I have, John CHANT b.1817
at Bratton married to a Sarah b.1802 at Gasper, Somerset with his
brother Robert b. 1828 Bratton. I also have a note on my Bratton file
of a Mary CHANT d.1851 Marnhull b. 1786 Bratton which would seem likely
to be wife of Robert CHANT (the elder), Robert and John's father. From
the 1881 Census I have 4 children for Robert: George E. 1861, Alfred
1865, Charles 1867 & Mary 1868.
Also for Bratton I have a Charles George CHANT b.1855 Bratton married
to a Harriett Jane b.1853 Sherborne in Bromley, Kent in 1881 with 2
children born Poplar, London. It would interesting to find where these
fit in too.

Hello Listers,
This is an old chestnut, at least to Michael anyway.
Quite sometime ago the list discussed the "two Charles Chants" of
Sherborne. I think everyone was/is in agreement that Charles Chant who
married Louisa Beazley 1829 was from the Oborne branch. The Charles
Chant who married Charlotte Lockyer 1823 at Sherborne was the son of
George Chant and Elizabeth Noakes born 1800 at Sherborne. This Charles
died 1828 at Sherborne.
What happened to Charles of Oborne who married Louisa is a mystery at
this stage. He was dead by 1849 at the latest as Louisa (wid) remarried
to James Bussell at Sherborne that year. Louisa and James moved away
from Sherborne shortly after their marriage as they are listed on 1861
census at Storton Caundle, Dorset, birthplace of James Bussell. No
children of this marriage
Her daugher Louisa born 1830 at Sherborne married John Chant (wid) 1854
at Sherborne. John was born c. 1821 at Bratton, Somerset son of Robert
Chant. John and Louisa on the 1861 census at Sherborne, however they are
on the 1871 census at Poplar, London.
I have a few questions/queries which someone might be able to help me
with:
i) what happened to Charles Chant bap 1804 at Oborne, first husband of
Louisa Beazley ? There is no burial record for him at Sherborne, he is
not on the 1841 census there, however neither is Louisa or their
children. They are not on the Oborne 1841 census either. There is a
possibility that they were living in Harrogate, Yorks of all places as
Louisa Jnr is listed there on the 1851 census aged 20 living with her
uncle George Beazley. Does anyone have access to the 1841 census for
Yorkshire ?
ii) what happened to Charles Chant bap 1833 at Sherborne, second and
last known child of Charles and Louisa ? Interestingly the IGI show him
as being buried on 4th April 1842 but with no location. As I say this
record does not show up in Sherborne PR. Indeed the only Charles Chant
death for June qtr 1842 is at Shaftsbury, Dorset. Interestingly there is
a further death entry for a Charles Chant during 1848 at Shaftsbury. Was
this Charles Snr ?
iii) Does anyone have any detail on John Chant (wid) of Bratton,
Somerset who married Louisa Chant Jnr 1854 ?
Regards,
Sean
