Dear Listers
Although I now "belong" to a huge CHANT family tree stretching back to the
1600's, I am surpised not to find a connection with the following family.
Can anyone cast any light please?
The information comes from different sources, so may not be entirely
accurate.
[From the 1901 Census for Stockbridge, Hants]
Job CHANT 47 [1881 census gives dob as 1857]
72 High Street "next to Congregational Chapel"
Plasterer(?) and Painter - Employer, working from home
William 18 (b.1883?) (also Plasterer/Painter worker - presumably working
for his Dad?)
Elsie 15 (b.1886?), Leonard 14 (b.1887?), Frederick 13 (b.1888?)
Job's wife was Elizabeth CHANT (b. 1853?) (Braintree, Essex)
Elizabeth buried 15 Jan 1901 aged 49
Job buried 27 Dec 1926 aged 69
Notes:
In 1881 Census, William was in Kent.
Frederick was killed in action in 1917
Leonard had a "club foot" and could not serve in the war.
Also in the 1901 Census there is an Elizabeth CHANT (aged 10) recorded at
19 High Street, Stockbridge as niece of George BROWN 47 (Platelayer on
railway)
Other members of the household are:
Frances 46, George W. 6, Louisa 4, Albert E. 1 (George WATTS 16, from
Bishops Waltham)
I believe that Frances (Sophia) (b.1854) is the sister of Job CHANT
mentioned above. If so, their parents were Charles and Sophia CHANT "of
Stockbridge". It is highly likely that the 10 year old Elizabeth, is the
daughter of Job and Elizabeth and probably went to live with her Aunt
Frances when her mother died in 1901. :-(
Any further information - or links with the Wiltshire Chants - would be
much appreciated.
With thanks
Sally
