Hello Listers,
Following on from my intention to have a look at the Bradford Abbas
family in more detail.
George Chant son of James Chant and Rhoda Moore
Bap 2nd March 1845 at B.Abbas
Unlike his brother George remained more or less in the same area all of
his life, merely moving to the nearby big town of Sherborne.
LIke his brothers he was also a stonemason. He is listed on the 1871
census at Westbury, Sherborne boarding with George Hazzard the local
butcher !
George was married to Annie Eliza Browne on the 31st july 1871 at
Sherborne. He was a 28yr old mason she a 23yr old dressmaker.
Interestingly his father James is listed as being deceased, although no
one to date has found a precise death date or place for him.
George and Annie remained in Sherborne all their lives. They are listed
on the 1881 census at Coombe, Sherborne:
George aged 35, stonemason born Bradford Abbas
Annie E aged 32 born Sherborne
Lily F aged 8 born Sherborne
Rose M aged 6 born Sherborne
Daisy M aged 1 born Sherborne
Full names and baptismal dates all at Sherborne for the 3 daughters
being:
Lily Florence Chant bap 3rd July 1872
Rose Maude Chant bap 1st April 1874
Daisy May Chant bap 18th June 1879.
The middle daughter during the late 1880's
1889: 2nd Nov (burial date) Rose Maud Chant aged 15 yrs at Sherborne.
They are on the 1891 census still at Coombe, Sherborne:
George Chant aged 45, stonemason born B Abbas
Annie E Chant aged 43 born Sherborne
LIly F Chant daughter aged 18 drapers apprentice born Sherborne
Daisy M Chant daughter aged 11 scholar born Sherborne.
George's wife Annie died during the late 1890's
Deaths Sep 1897
Chant Annie Eliza 49 Sherborne 5a 199.
Buried 15 Jul. 1897 Annie Eliza Chant aged 49
On the 1901 census:
Cold Harbour, Sherborne
George Chant aged 54, widower, stonemason born BA
Lily F Chant daughter aged 28 drapers assistant born Sherborne
Daisy M Chant daughter aged 21 born Sherborne.
George was remarried only months later:
10 June. 1901 at Sherborne George Chant 54 (Wid) - Mary Eliza
Gibbs 46 (Wid)
F. James Lab. (Dec) F. Henry Gray (Dec)
Not much is known yet on Mary Gibbs. Presumably she had family before
her marriage to George.
It looks as though George and Mary remained in Sherborne, where they
died:
Mary Eliza CHANT buried 13/2/1914 aged 59.
George CHANT buried 13/4/1916 aged 71.
So George was widowed twice.
It is'nt clear what happened to daughter Lily, whether or not she
married. Daisy certainly did:
Marriages Mar 1908
Chant Daisy May Sherborne 5a 523
ISAACS Frederick George Sherborne 5a 523
It is not known is she had children, however she also remained in
Sherborne where she died:
Daisy May; ISAACS; buried 14th April; 1936; Aged 56 Years.
There is the possibility that there are no descendents via George's
line.......what is definately known is that the name died with him in
1916 for his own line, only having 3 daughters and no sons.

Sean
