G'Day Listers,
I am sending this message as a general reminder for the experienced
researchers and to those new to using computers for research.
This is the first and last message I want to see on the list
about this subject. Viruses and Worms are a constant problem
and if you want to keep up to date on them, there are other
email groups to discuss them, so please dont post warnings to the
list every time a new virus or worm appears. Though this has not been
a problem on this list it has been on other Rootsweb lists.
That said, be careful of attachments to emails and dont open them if you
were not expecting them. Keep your Virus software up to date as much
as possible. This will keep your system safer but never totally secure,
so remain vigilent. Scan your system regularly for viruses and worms.
Take care for hoaxes that state your computer is infected with
a virus and that if you remove a certain file it will fix the problem.
Usually it turns out these requests to remove a file actually
are asking you to remove a vital file your computer needs to
operate properly. Removing such files can cause your system to crash.
Some Virus warnings are hoaxes. Currently there is a big problem with
unwanted spam and the volume is increasing. While the US and Australia
have new laws which require requests to be removed from mailing lists
be immediately complied with, email spammers have moved to operating
from countries that do not. Use the remove option from these where possible.
I have even seen spam messages reportedly coming from this list via
Chant-l-request(a)rootsweb.com. Like with Virus attacks, false sender
addresses
are common. No spam message would be coming from a Rootsweb address.
regards
