Hello Allen and John
Great additional info.
Allan can you tell me more about this convict Samuel Chant. I have a missing
Samuel Chant in my family lines. Other than John Freebody my 4 x great
grandmother's brother who visited Tasmania for a time in the early 1800's I
have no connections to Tasmania as yet.
Maybe this is finally one? Can you detail Samuel Chant and his family for me
please?
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hi John and Michael

Cannot go up or down at this stage but sideways <g>.........
The birth of "Tamar" Elizabeth in Victoria in 1871 leads to Tasmania.
Between the birth of Henry John in 1873 and Mabel in 1878 the family
moved to Tassie. There the following births occurred:
Maud Jane 8/9/1874 Launceston 1874/1804/33
Albert Edward 6/2/1876 Launceston 1876/2351/33
So between 1874 and 1877 the family lived in Tassie.
I would suggest that naming their daughter Tamar in 1871 at Victoria
suggests that John came originally from Tassie as many did in the
1850-1860's. However there is no convict by that name nor is there
a birth of any John that fit the right timespan in Tasmania.
The convict Samuel Chant had four boys born in the right timespan but
none were named John Henry. However when Tasmanians moved to
Victoria in goldfields days they often altered names to hide the convict
ancestry. Even so John Henry has an early connection with Tasmania
in some way.
Nothing in NSW nor any migration into Victoria from overseas re John Henry
CHANT. A death record of John Henry may help. I don't know whether you
have gone down that path but I have various records and CD's that may assist
However if this is a direct family of yours I would suggest the Victorian
Marriage
of John Henry CHANT and Mary Ann FINN ref 1863/3295 would be the best
source.
Sorry if I have gone over ground that you already know or are aware of.
