Hello John
Totally agree with you re the Whitehead's and the various errors in their
LDS submissions.
Do you have John's baptism details.
I have him West Chinnock or similar circa 1756-58

As I understand it I have him listed as the son of
John Chant and Dianah Templeman of West Chinnock
but this researcher has him as the son of Thomas Chant b 1710.
Hello Michael
This researcher got this information from the Family Search web site. Whilst
there is no reason to suppose records of any antiquity are more likely to be
accurate in one respect more than another, the submitter to the IGI together
with his family have put other items on file which are known to be wrong and
therefore their accuracy in this case can be called into question.
Colin Whitehead has submitted that John who married Jane Ford was the son of
Thomas (1710-1778 Stoke-sub-Hamdon) and Sarah. In turn this Thomas was the
son of Thomas (1665) the son of Thomas (1630-1670 Stoke-sub-Hamdon) who
married Gartheret Hendy.
A number of researchers have the line from Thomas and Gartheret (Gertrude)
to
Thomas (1665) married Mary Virgin. This is the other family which was
mentioned as causing possible confusion in a posting earlier this week.
If the Whiteheads are right I apologise but I feel that a number of the
items
they have posted are either guesswork or put in to tidy things up. You only
have to look at the number of events that are supposed to have taken place
in
Stoke-sub-Hamdon but which subsequent delvings have proved otherwise, to
feel
this convenience factor has overcome discretion.
Regards,
John
