Hello Beverley,
My transcription of the West Chinnock Parish registers shows this Mary to
have been entered as the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth and not Robert and
Cecily. I do not show a Mary for Robert and Cecily and it would be highly
unlikely that she was part of their family and wrongly transcribed as Cecily was
producing her children between about 1722 Brigard (a.k.a. Bridget) and about
1738 William. Assuming Cecily was between 15 and 20 at the time of her first
known child this would mean 45ish when Mary came along: not impossible but
highly unlikely since I have that Robert died in 1741 so would not have been the
father even if she were the mother.
The Chiselborough Parish Registers show the marriage of Robert Chant of West
Chinnock to Elizabeth Davis 18 October 1750. I have this Robert as about
1724-1725.
There is another Robert Chant (of Thomas Chant and Mary Virgin) and
Elizabeth pairing about this time producing children in the same area and the two
families get confused to such an extent I have broken the higher up connections
hoping for clarification one day.
For Robert and Elizabeth (but which ones?) I have Thomas 1738, Robert 1739,
Hannah 1742, Mary 1744-1751, George 1746, Mary 1751-1828 (your one), William
1753-c1755, Elizabeth 1755-c1757, William 1756-1825 and Elizabeth 1757. What
you might call a mélange! The earlier ones would belong to the earlier pair
but from your Mary onwards (maybe before if they weren't careful) the children
could belong to either couple.
I haven't got your Joseph baptised 17-7-1761 Chiselborough in my
transcriptions there for Chant and don't look to have him recorded anywhere else. Do
you
have any more details please?
The Ann, Mary and James you mention, I have for Robert 1739 (with no details
of wife). I didn't have that Mary married James Salisbury 1785: where
please? (The IGI has Odcombe with a couple of conflicting dates.) I also have a
John 1769-1769 as Robert's son.
Cheers,
John
