Hallo Michael and Grant and all
Researchers who have viewed pre 1837 Parish registers would know that it is
extremely unusual for the marriage entries to name the Father of either
party. If this does occur it is usually where the marriage has taken place
by Licence and one of the parties is a Minor (ie under 21) and required the
Fathers permission for the marriage to take place.
I think I have wondered on the List on other occasions if any descendent of
William Chant who married Elizabeth Male of Barrington in Stoke sub Hamdon
on the 17 July 1831 actually has a copy of that marriage but have never
heard if that is the case. (It would be interesting to know whether William
could sign his name).
There are other research details which distinguish between William
(nominally of Stoke) and William of Odcombe son of Robert and brother of
Christopher.
Parish register and census entries indicate that Williams' (Stoke)
occupation was a Glover whereas William of Odcombe was a Gardener, and
Elizabeth nee Male born Barrington 1807 whereas William of Odcombe's wife
Elizabeth was born in East Chinnock in 1803.
William Chant (listed as of Odcombe) married Elizabeth Rendell of East
Chinnock on the 14 May 1837 in East Chinnock.
As I mentioned previously William was born in Odcombe in 1795 and died in
Odcombe in 1859 listed as aged 63.
Regards
Christine

Not sure that's proof
Maybe if both marriages of each William Chant and the one for Christopher
Chant
recorded in a parish register with full entry details known. That one stated
William Chant son of Robert
married someone not Elizabeth Male and the other Parish marriage entry
stated William Chant
son of ? married Elizabeth Male daughter of ? and the marriage entry stated
for Christopher
Chant at ? son of Robert married Jane Male daughter of (different fathers
name to Elizabeth Male)
that would make a strong case.
Christine could be right, but not sure certainty has been shown. Pre 1837
born lines are always hard to
state as certain. It's always a problem when we have Chant people with the
same first names in
numerious places by the 17 and 1800's. They definately moved about more than
we give credit for
making it even more difficult as we know from examples such as the Oborne,
Beaminster, Yeovil,
Horsington, Holwell, Hayden etc Chant lines and of course those that went
overseas.

Michael
