Hello Barbara,
As Joan says:"Good luck". William is a 'brick wall' for so many
researchers. He and Elizabeth married in Stoke-sub-Hamdon but there are no parental
details. He does not appear with his family on any of the censuses. He may be using a
second given name, as so often happened. He may have been base born and so his parents do
not appear as Chants. Was he adopted and took the name of a step-father? There are so many
possibilities that any of us who are looking for him have to keep our eyes open in all
directions.
There is a Noah William Chant 1816 who may have been from the same family, particularly if
there was an adoption of some kind, and for whom a similar search has proved fruitless. We
know that he is buried in Brampton, Ontario and that his gravestone says that he was born
in Stoke-sub-Hamdon but, again, have no parents. There are others in missing lines from
this time span as well, so there may be no baptisms or the baptisms are in an out of the
way parish yet to be discovered. It may even be that the script in any record is so bad as
to be indecipherable!
John
(I see that you say 'Matlock' for William's birthplace. The most likely is
Martock as that is the next village to Stoke-sub-Hamdon. Matlock is in Derbyshire.)
