Thanks for your e-mail. I have made no Brixham connection to the Chants (yet!) and the
origins of the earliest Chant ancestor on our records are a bit vague, but believed to be
Hallsands in South Devon (just across Start Bay from Berry Head), although he may have
come from Somerset/Dorset prior to settling in the South Hams and establishing the line to
which my wife belongs.
It's true that a lot of South Devon people went to the Newfoundland fishing in the
summer and took with them shoes made locally in the winter (presumably for barter). No
doubt there are some local history references to that, but I haven't pursued that yet.
I'll get back to you with a bit more, if I can get my hands on it.
