Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello Andy
Could you post the full details on them?
Can you fit these Chant's into a branch at all?

Hello Michael and Janette,
I have been reading with interest your discussion on Joseph Chant, who is
the great grandfather of my husband Kevin O'Toole.
I am very surprised to see that you believe Joseph married twice. When
Joseph married Ellen O'Keefe the marriage certificate shows his status as a
batchelor, certainly not a widower. Of course, from this information it
never occurred to me that he could have been married previously. As Joseph
and Ellen's first three children were born before their marriage, it appears
that the possibility of him being married to Margaret Savage could be the
reason.
You mention another connection to the Savage family - Mary Jane Chant
married John Patrick Savage - Mary Jane being Kevin's grandmother. I
cannot see a connection between the two Savage families at this stage. John
was born in Ireland and arrived in Victoria in Melbourne February 1887. The
family came from County Down in Ireland.
This is all very exciting, and I will certainly be following all this up,
and appreciate any help you can give me.
Regards
Enid
Hello Janette
Seems Joseph and Margaret both claimed they were widowed (mutual agreement
maybe).
From a Savage family researcher in contact with Simpson descendants I got
the
following which differs on Margaret Savage's later life as not deceased c
1873.
"Joseph Chant I have m Margaret Savage in 1859, they had 2 children both
had died by 1861 that is when she and Joseph seemed to have parted ways as
she had a daughter Fanny the same year although I would not be surprised is
Fanny was a Chant as well. Margaret has named John Woodhead the father &
then they had 3 sons, the first two died the same year as their births but
the last one survived. When Margaret left John, however she took Fanny with
her and it seemed Walter was reared with John's family, a marriage before
and one after Margaret.
Margaret then went on to have a daughter, Fanny, as the first one died just
before the baby's birth, then married Hop Lee who then changed his name to
John Simpson. Joseph Chant, b Somersetshire, went on to marry Ellen O'Keefe
in 1874 the same year Margaret m Hop Lee claiming to be a widow. The had
5 children around Darlingford."

G'Day members
Please take note I have recieved notice that over the coming week or so,
RootsWeb will be changing its mailing list software, affecting all the
Lists, including CHANT-L. (The MessageBoards will also be changing.) The
change is necessary because the old software currently in use is no
longer supported by the developer of the software.
Currently we are classed as a "C" (A-C are due to move 15 August, the
time might be either during Tuesday or Wednesday, depending upon what
international time zone they are using for the date of changeover).
Until there's any notice to the contrary, I am working on the basis
that it's going to happen on Tuesday.
I'll try to let you know if and/or when I know more. In the meantime
there is no reason to let any of this interrupt the important business
of the List.
The changes for subscribers will not be anything to worry about.
Significant differences to be expected:-
Most significant is the fact that you cannot be subscribed twice to
the List under a single email address. Thus if you wish to subscribe
to the Chant List (or any list) in both Mail mode and in Digest mode
simultaneously you will need to use two separate email addresses - one
for each mode.
The message posting mode will no longer need the "L" in the address
for posting mail to the list. However, we are told you can still
send messages to the list using the Chant-L(a)rootsweb.com or you
could simply use the new format Chant(a)rootsweb.com after the switchover.
Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. Some listers
may need to alter their mail filters if affected by this dropping of the
"L".
The "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands will be a little different.
However there will be a tag line at the bottom of all list messages
for a while afterwards giving instructions for this so it shouldn't be
a problem.
To subscribe or unsubscribe, the word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE will
need to be in the *Subject line* of the e-mail - not the body of
the text which still works at present.
Everyone will have the facility to stop mail being sent to them, and
then to turn it back on again, whenever they choose - very handy for
holiday times. This is known as "no mail mode". A change requested
by List Managers. Many listers will appreciate this rather than get
bounced off the list because your inbox fills up while on Holidays
and messages bounce back to Rootsweb and autocue the servers to
remove that address.
Digest format will be a little different. AOL subscribers will
receive a Zip file of messages but this is down to AOL rather
than Rootsweb, as I understand it.
There will be changes to the way in which bounced mailings are
handled by the system. Up to now as Admin I have usually received
copies of bounces and I could see when there was an ongoing problem
with a subscribers address. This will no longer be the case and I
will be unaware of a problem until the system disables your list
account due to the bounces.
I think that covers the main changes you'll need to be aware of but
I'll do my best to update everyone as and when there's anything more
to tell.
Anyway for now it's continue as usual.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hello Michael,
The birth date of Ernest Victor CHANT as 23.11.1890 Twickenham, Middlesex which I listed, probably came from the WW1 Medal listings which I think Sean might have sent to the list, which gives quite a lot of information about each person including parents names too.

Subject: [CHANT] Albert Chant 1930's Guildford-Surrey on Transport site
G'Day Listers
In about 1930 Albert Chant established his haulage contracting business in
Guildford Road.
He would put wooden seats in his van and transport people to the races and
on works outings.
He would also carry worshippers to the Roman Catholic Church on Sundays.
Before long he
also became a coach proprietor and from then on his passengers could travel
in more comfort.
As his sons grew up they joined the firm and assisted their father. Frank
Chant drove the
coach when his father became ill. Albert Chant died in 1939 and the brothers
took over the
firm. Sister Edie, having learnt to drive, went back to assist her brothers
and helped to
keep the business going when they were called up for military service. As
the brothers grew
older the business gradually wound down but Jim Chant, although officially
retired, is still
driving on occasions. Charabancs were popular in the 1920s and 1930s and
passengers brought
trade to the village, particularly when the Aldershot Tattoos were held at
Rushmoor Arena.
