Hello Gwen,
It's Janette from Australia here. I've just read your email re your Chant/Osborne connection. In my connected file I've got lots of Osborne surnames. I know you mentioned Osborne connections in Norton sub Hamdon & Chiselborough BUT I've got Edith Barrett CHANT chris.24.9.1825 in Somerton,Somerset who is the sister of my great grandfather Alfred Chant chris.11.7.1825 Somerton who came to Australia as did Edith. Edith married 27.4.1850 in St.Peters C.or E, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to John Weymouth OSBORNE who was christened chris.15.10.1821 in St.Levan Parish,Cornwall. I have ancestors of Edith's husband back to a marriage of a John c1756 in Cornwall who had 7 children. Does your Osborne line go back to Cornwall.?.
As my other Osborne marriages are not to Chants I'll send info re them to you off- list.
Regards,
Janette in Oz.
G'Day Listers
I am returning to Sherborne Line queries.
Noah Chant b 1811 had a son Robert Chant his eldest brother of Wilfred
Chant discussed onlist in some detail previously.
In the 1851 Robert was about 17 and an apprentice Harness Maker
Robert was not with his family in 1861 Census
I am wondering if anyone can locate Robert in the 1861 Census probably not
Sherborne
possibly Holborn, London.
Robert had a son Robert Wilfred Chant born Sep-Dec 1855 Holborn London
so he should be in the Census entry aged about 5 or 6
Robert Wilfred Chant died in Kensington District, London in 1884 aged 28.
If anyone knows anyone from this family or connected researchers would
appreciate hearing about them.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hi Listers,
I omitted to mention that Dorcas Ann Chant, daughter of Christopher and Edith, died and was buried on 5 August 1852 at Stoke-sub-Hamdon.
Prue
Hi Christine, Keith and Listers,
I also have Christopher Chant, son of John Chant and Ann Palmer, married to
Edith Sansom on 18 Mar 1851 and they are listed as husband and wife on the
1851 Census. I have that they had a daughter Dorcas Ann born 3 Jul 1852.
When his brother John Chant and his wife Elizabeth Butcher arrived in
Sydney, Australia on the "Zemindar" on August 23, 1857, the immigration
record states that John had a brother Christopher Chant in the colony, but
his residence was unknown.
John and Christopher were brothers of my great-grandfather Joel (Giles)
Chant and I have also been puzzling over why he left his wife behind in
England, or if perhaps she came out and then returned home. There is a
definite problem with his age in this death entry as he was born in 1815.

Hallo Keith
Lets hope that John or Sean may be able to throw some light on this strange
Death entry you have found - twenty one years seems such a vast difference
with the age.

Hello Keith
Just realised Ann Tamar Morgan was only 16 when she married
James Walter Smyth. Was it in Melbourne?

Hello Again Listers,
Have been doing a bit more digging in Vic and found the following.
Children of Joseph & Ann Morgan, nee Chant
Thomas George 1846 born Mt Macedon
Ann Tommer 1849 Serpentine
Charles Isaac 1851 Kilmore
Joseph Charles Isaac 1853 Melbourne
I then found the marriage in 1865 of
Ann Tamar Morgan to James Walter Smyth.
Sarah Chant departed Pylmouth on 25th Sept 1840 and arrived 15th Jan 1841
Port Phillip Vic.
According to Florence Chuck in her book on arrivals in Vic she had that
Sarah married James Morgan so that is why I hadn't found the children.
Sarah Married 3rd July 1844 Melbourne to Joseph Morgan.
That's all for now
Regards
Keith Hayden

Yep Keith
My family lines are really, really inter-tangled
My 2x great grandfather Richard Chant son of Mary Bunter
and James Chant of Sherborne married his cousin
Grace Bunter daughter of William Bunter from Sherborne.
Mary Mudford married William Bunter's son William Bunter.
So Richard Chant's brother was married to Martha Mudford and his
brother-in-law/cousin married to Mary Mudford and his nephew
James Chant to Eliza Mudford. The Mudford's as mentioned
descended from the West Chinnock Chant's.
Richard's brother James Chant on the same day married Grace's
sister Emily Bunter in a double wedding. Luke Chant had married
Margaret Mott and brother Samuel Chant married Margaret's sister
Rosetta Mott.
After Grace Chant's early death, Richard married
his neice, daughter of his elder brother Luke Chant and Margaret Mott.
Alice Chant my Great grandmother was Richard Chant's
eldest child from this marriage.
So there are mulitple connections to the Bunters and double links
to the Motts.
My great grandmother Alice Chant married the step grandson
of Michael Murphy. Michael's first wife was Sarah Bunter
neice of James Chant and Mary Bunter. So yet again in another
generation links to the same family on both the wife and
husbands side.
Sarah Bunter was Luke and Richard Chant's cousin
OH what a tangled web my family weaved.
As you might imagine the above can be a sore issue amoungst
my close family line. One of the reasons why my elder family
were very secretive and reluctant to discuss certain parts of
the family history when I started out in 1979.
Later the convicts in my family started showing up 1788, 1790, 1791, 1792,
1796, 1812 NSW and 1850, 1852, 1853, 1854 in WA. Another reason for secrecy
in the family as back in 79 many still considered convict ancestry as
an issue of shame. This going back to when expiree convicts were considered
a lower class than free settlers. The WA convicts had lived into the 1920's.
Researching the convicts in my fathers line I found
there are slight links to Izard and Manning families
George Chant (brother of Richard and Luke) married Eliza Izard
and Manning family links into George's descendants. It's a very
small world.
Then there is my 3x and 4x great grandfather James Chant 1816-1876
cousin Mary Chant who married Joseph Coles in Sherborne.
Their daughter Mahala Coles married Philip Chant a member
of the Oborne Chant.
Anyone else like to connect their tree to mine? I think there
is still room somewhere. Just joking sort of.
I expect I may well find links to the NZ Chants and my Boulton family
arrive 1801 NSW. Two siblings of my direct line, Edward Boulton and
Maria Boulton who married Joseph Toms (signed the maori wars treaty
of 1840's)were both Whalers that settled NZ in the late 1830s. The
possibility of further links to NZ Chant lines is something I am keeping in
mind.
It is highly likely, if we knew all our ancestral lines back 10-15
generations
back, a number of the same names would pop up on many of our trees.
Well we are all cousins somewhere back in the past for sure.
regards
Michael

Hello Keith
I dont have much on Christopher Chant. Believe to be one of 12 children
Only have him baptised 25 December 1816 Stoke Sub Hamdon son of John Chant
1790-1875
and Ann Palmer 1786 - 1863. John Chant a grandson of John Chant and Dianah
Templemen
from West Chinnock
I have that his spouse was named Jane?
and they had a son John b 1835?
Could Edith Samson be a second wife or is what I have wrong?
regards

Hi John & Others
I have found in the Victorian BDM the following death.
Chris CHANT
died 1888 aged 54 ??? Beechworth
Parents: John Chant & Ann Palmer
I can't find anything further on him. Could this be Christopher son of John
& Ann Chant born 1815 Stoke Sub Hamdon.
We have that Christopher married Edith Samson and that she died in 1888
Stoke. In the 1861, 1871, census she is living with James & Jane Palmer, as
sister-in-law and 1881 with her niece Sarah Long.
She is listed as married in 1871 and widowed by 1881.
There is no sign of Christopher after 1851 census.
Will be interested in what you feel about this entry.

To respond to your query regarding the fullness of details posted by
listers.
For those of us that pay for an Ancestry subscription much may depend on the
type of internet connection we have especially if it is not our own family
line. Dialup or broadband and our account limit/billing period may decide
what we download. Sometimes a lister may only look at the family group on
the index so that just the place of residence and the names in the household
with birth year are noted without downloading the full census image (doing
that will of course depend on the speed of the internet connection).
These details are not only available on Ancestry of course - all my census
entries were originally gained from viewing the films although of course
Ancestry has been wonderful for finding the odd two GxGrandparents who had
the temerity to wander from their home base.
To be frank if it is my own family line I would never expect another
researcher to expend their money and time to find all my family details on
all seven census records to complement the necessary Birth, Death and
Marriage certificates.
I love helping other researchers when they have a problem but for me to have
all the details via someone else would dilute the pleasure/satisfaction of
doing family history/ For me nothing beats looking at the original record
myself - why should another researcher have all the fun of sorting out the
jigsaw puzzle !!

I am asking this of all Chant list members and it is not aimed at any one
individual
I am just wondering in general:
Why is not the full details of a census entry mentioned on the list. Just
bits and pieces
of the entry are discussed when a individual family branch from any line is
discussed? It just makes
sense to me that if the aim is help each other to connect up as many Chant
lines as possible
to their branch and thereby explain where each Chant member fits, full
census entries should be
detailed if you have them. Not everyone on list has access to Ancestry.com
databases where, I
gather, much of the large amount of data for BDM's and Census entries over
the last couple of
years is coming from.
With details from a full entry, people can work out if suggestions of
connections are accurate enough
to consider them part of their family line. Others may see a flaw in the
suggestion. And that way can
question the reasoning like a scientist questions a hypothesis or scientific
theory. Sometimes the
testing results in a better answer. (Sorry the scientist in me coming out
here.)
Discussions of these entries or possible flaws may also get our silent
members more involved.
A good example was Christine recently questioned the baptism entry for two
Sarah Chant's. When it
was suggested it was from West Chinnock Christine posted she had checked
them and those entries
were not from there. This was great as it shows we need to be constantly
questioning out lines for errors
and poor assumptions.

Hello Listers,
Naturally my previous message was not meant to go the List. My apologies
to everyone !
However it is good to see message board postings ending up on the List
because it widens the network.
Regards,
Sean
