Hi John and Sean
Having just sent a message caught up with other postings! I too have wondered about who looked after the children. The family story had it that Thamas walked from Langport to London as he did not like the plans that his stepmother had for him but then I found that James and Rebecca were in London, confusing. But I have discovered that his Whitemore grandfather had remarried in 1861 and so wonder if it was his step grandmother who had these plans! His Whitemore grandfather progressed from farrier and post horse letters to veterinary surgeon through census returns for Langport. Sean did find Thomas W Chant for me in London by 1871 listed as a warehouseman - he ended up owning the company - but I have not been able to trace Emma or James for that census yet. Emma married 23 Dec 1875 in Chelsea. George Leighton was a plumber from Ambleside in Westmoreland - how did they meet?- and their children were born there. But by 1901 they were back in Hampstead, London.
Cheers
Hilary

Hi Sean,
Looks right. I do wonder about the children from the first marriage and who
brought them up on the basis that Elizabeth had died. Florence died in 1864
and so did George, but this still left three for whom I have marriages and

Hi Sean,
There is only one entry for the whole of Norfolk in the Chants transcribed
on FreeBMD so far and that is the marriage of a John Chant in March 1902
quarter (Yarmouth 4b 37) to either Florence Strange or Mary Ryan. I haven't got
anything about the family and it might be hard to identify, although I'll put in
a little speculation and we'll see what Christine thinks!
There are a few Chants in the 1901 census in Norfolk when you put in the
name to search: all are married ladies save one, and that is a John born 1875
Yeovil, who is visiting a Cox family in Yarmouth.
On FreeBMD there is only one John born in the right time scale in Yeovil
District: 12/1874 quarter (5c 468).
On file I have only one John who fits: the son of Robert Stroud Chant and
Annie Juliet Young. Robert is grandson of Onesiphorus.
What do you think, please, Christine?
Cheers,
John

Hi John
Dont think Mary A aged 1 is the same child but as you say her parentage
raises another question - her birth appears to be 1860 March qtr Clifton 6a
68.
Wonder if she is a daughter of one of the older sons?
The second Mary A birth March 1865 Clifton 6a 64 and her death could be aged
14 1879 Jun qtr Bristol 6a 39.
There is a marriage of Henry 1864 March qtr Bristol 6a 1 but spouse doesnt
appear yet and I notice that there is a birth and death registration for
perhaps a son Henry James in 1867 (Mar qtr Clifton 6a 67) and 1869 (Sep qtr
Clifton 6a 102) .
I hadnt done a great deal on this family as just gathered a few bits while
trying to distinguish this family from the Joseph who married Ann Collier in
Bristol in 1825.

About ten days ago the marriage of Richard Muston Chant son of George and
Tamar apparently born 1807 in Guernsey was covered with possibility that it
was to Ann Patten in April 1836 in West Chinnock and I think you asked for a
possible baptism of Ann - This would appear to be it :
Ann dau of Joseph and Ann Patten born 6 July baptised 16 July 1809.

Hello Sean,
That Ernest William Chant who died 1941 aged 50 in Newington is the son of Joseph Arthur Chant 1860-1912 & Susan Jane nee Dance 1859-1931. Ernest was born 19.10.1890.

Janette in Oz.
Hello John,
Thanks for the marriage date for Joseph PATTEN & Mary CHANT.
----------------------------------------------
Re Robert CHANT born 1805 West chinnock. As I stated on 9th June I have him as son of James Chant 1774 & Mary Mudford & married ? to a Mary born c1806 Merriott.
I have an Isaac born 29.12.1805 West chinnock & chris.9.2.1806 West chinnock who I thought could have been a twin to Mary.
Seeing you have Robert 1805 as son of an un-married Mary CHANT it sounds to me like he could be from this Mary the daughter of William CHANT & Eleanor HALLETT.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Re Matthew CHANT born c1795 in Owersby, Linccolnshire.
His father could be John date unknown who was the father of John 1814 Market Rosen, South Kelsey, Lincolshire who married 4.6.1851 Grimsby, Linc.to Caroline ESLER / ESELER.
For George born c1821 son of Matthew & Ann I have that in 1881 he was with a Sarah born c1831 Caistor & was a plumber/Glazier as at the 1881 census. There's a Georrge married Dec 1862 which could be him. There's also a Sarah who died June 1902 aged 70 & also a Sarah died June 1905 aged 80 but which one is the question.
For James born 1829 son of Matthew & Ann I have he & Martha had a George born c1874 in Gunness / Gunhouse?.
I have James as an Ironstone miner in 1881 census.
I also notice that on the 1881 census at Lincolshire in your email to the list back in Dec 2003 there's a Sarah head, 58 an annuitant Caistor & her granddaughter Sarah A. aged 25 a housekeeper Ashby in the home of George GELL retired farmer. Sarah Ann is the daughter of James 1829 & Martha nee GELL.
Also in the Dec 2003 email you queried an entry in 1881 census for Lincolshire of a Hannah Chant 70 U born Stoke-sub-Hamden & you didn't know where she fitted in.
Well there's a Hannah chris.1.9.1833 Stoke-sub-Hamden daughter of John 1808 & Martha 1810. Could that be the Hannah Chant in the 1881 census?..
Regards,
Janette in Oz
Sean playing a bit of catchup - Do you mean Joseph the Mariner in Bristol?
I dont think we have discussed this family in recent weeks (but I could be
wrong) but I did raise a question on 2May regarding a different Joseph Chant
who married Ann Collier of London in Bristol in 1825 so maybe that is what
you remembered.

Thanks Janette,
I have added a bit to Matthew's tree.
Hannah remains a mystery. She would have been born about 1811 if the age of
70 in the 1881 census is accurate. She is shown as unmarried rather than
widowed. I wonder if that is correct.
In the previous censuses there is only one Hannah Chant born in
Stoke-sub-Hamdon five years either side of the date and that is Hannah Clothier who
married Samson Chant. This second Hannah appears only in 1881.

Hello Keith and John,
There is a possibility that the Benjamin who went to the US came from
Henstridge. There was a Benjamin of the same age, born c. 1844, who is
listed on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 at Henstridge son of George. He seems
to disappear after 1871 which is in keeping with the immigration records.
Does anyone with Henstridge connections or information think looks
likely ?
I am thinking of the death record that John stated earlier which may go
against the possibility that the US Benjamin came from Middle Chinnock.
Regards,
Sean

Thanks Keith,
Benjamin is on the 1881 US census at Rawlson, Colorado. The age is
right. I guess we will have to see if there were other Benjamins in
England of the same age. If this is him, then who is the Benjamin who
died during 1852 ?
This is Benjamin's immigration details:
