Hello Listers,
Found more from Fulton County History in a chapter entitled "Family
Sketches" which answers many questions and raises others !
"Chant, Ralph R, Johnstone was born in Milborne Port Somersetshire,
England, August 11th 1858, and came with his parents when he was but
fourteen years old, finishing his education in the academy. He learned
the glove trade from his step-father Charles Weare and is now
manufacturing gloves under the firm of Weare and Chant. On the 17th day
of July 1889 he married Anna M, second daughter of Stephen Sutliff of
Johnstone. They had one son James L R R , born on May 7th 1890. Mr
Chant's father James was born at the old home during 1809, he married
Harriet G Belben, bu whom he had two children, Ralp R as above noted and
George J S who is a glover with his brother. Mr Chant died November 11th
1867, and is buried in the family plot in St John's Graveyard, at their
former home in England. On the 3rd September 1871 Mrs Chant married
Charles Weare, all now being of Johnstone"
Well what a find ! It fills a few gaps and wraps up the story....however
I was stunned by the only one son statement....no mention of the future
Attorney-General Raemond Chant. Was it an error. It is clear that
Raemond left the family home at an early age. Maybe they were
estranged ? I don't think there is any doubt that Raemond was the son of
Ralph R Chant....his WW1 Draft card says as much.
Further information on the brother James and Raemond from the 1930 US
census to follow.
Regards,
Sean

Hi Sean and Beryl
Yes Sean - ( he was discussed briefly on the list 22 May) William's parents
are William and Hannah Nee Cox who married in Odcombe in 1821. William Snr
and Hannah also appear to have had two daughters Eliza and Mary, although
Mary's baptism is the only one which appears in Odcombe registers although
William lists his birthplace as Odcombe - William, Eliza are with Hannah
in Montacute by 1841. William Jnr married Emma Bool in 1850, William dies
in 1885 and wife Emma in 1911. Their son Charles marries Ellen Trask in 1889
in Odcombe.

Hi Beryl
Robert and Maria may have had a son William born 1826 but unfortunately he
is not the William who married Emma Bool.
The marriage certificate of William Chant and Emma Bool names Williams
Father as William Chant

Hello Listers,
We discussed this family at length a month or so ago, however there were
a few details which I wanted to raise but never did at the time. Here
there are:
It looks as though Maria and the bulk of her children migrated to
Australia via Victoria:
Family Name First Name Age Month Year Ship
CHANT ELIZA 22 DEC 1884 ANTIOPE
CHANT JOSEPH 8 DEC 1884 ANTIOPE
CHANT LYDIA 14 DEC 1884 ANTIOPE
CHANT MARIA 48 DEC 1884 ANTIOPE
CHANT MARIA 6 DEC 1884 ANTIOPE
CHANT WALTER 11 DEC 1884 ANTIOPE
It does not look like Edward was on the ship....unless of course it is a
transcription error. However it is also interesting to note that the
eldest child Rhoda Jane Chant travelled to Australia alone the previous
year and went through NSW as opposed to Victoria. She was indeed married
by the time her mother and siblings arrived;
NSW BDMS:
2019/1883 MORRIS JAMES E CHANT RHODA J SYDNEY
So when did Edward arrive ? Before daughter Rhoda ?
A few additional details that Listers might not know:
Rhoda's death entry;
12911/1944 MORRIS RHODA JANE EDWARD MARIA RYDE (North Sydney)
Other siblings death dates;
2204/1912 CHANT JOSEPH EDWARD MARIA EAST MAITLAND
820/1936 CHANT EDWARD CHARLES EDWARD MARIA ANNANDALE
Not sure what happened to Walter and Maria. They may well have remained
in Victoria as did sister Lydia.
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
You will be aware that I have possibly extended the Oborne to the US via
Richard's line. However does anyone know anything of his son Henry ?
I think that the data I have came from Gill. Gill any ideas on Richard's
line ? What are your thoughts on the son James....and Ralph Richard etc
etc.
Regards,
Sean

Hello Listers,
Well it looks like I've managed to kill two birds with one stone here,
solved where James Chant came from and also filled another gap in the
Oborne family...or rather extended again that branch into the States. If
this is old news to Oborne researchers please forgive my enthusiasm !
The 1851 census at Milborne Port:
Richard Chant aged 80, widower, pauper labourer born Oborne
James Chant, son aged 41, ? maker born Milborne Port
Richard must be son of Benjamin Chant and Martha Chapman, bap 29th Nov
1771 at Oborne. I have in my notes that was married to Elizabeth ? No
date or maiden name, however I also have this marriage for Milborne
Port: CHANT, Richard/PHILIPS, Hester Milborne Port13Oct1800. Is this
him ? I also have a son Henry Chant for Richard and Elizabeth ? But no
date or place of birth. Where there more children ?
So it looks like the Oborne mob also extended itself to NY and in the
shape of Raemond Chant into the shady realm of politics
As for son James I have these additional details:
Deaths Dec 1867
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chant James 58 Wincanton 5c 328
Marriages Jun 1858
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belben Harriett Garrett Wincanton 5c 899
Belbin Harriett Garrett Wincanton 5c 899
Chant James Wincanton 5c 899
Can anyone interested or involved in the Oborne family verify or refute
what I have said.
Regards,
Sean

Hello Listers,
Interestingly I came across an immigration entry for Ralph R Chant
during 1883 aged 24 into NYC. He must have had a brief trip back home to
England as he is listed on the 1880 US census aged 21 at Fulton, NY with
his mother and brother and step-father.

Sean

Hello Listers,
Found Ralph R Chant and family on the 1871 census at Milborne Port. His
father James had died between 1861 and 1871. His mother Harriet is
listed as widowed. Ralph aged 12 and brother George aged 10. No other
siblings. The Buckland Newton connection is a mystery at present.
Very interestingly, next door was another widower, Charles Weare aged 54
born Temple Coombe, working as a glove cutter. So it seems that Charles
and Harriet were next dor neighbours before they were married.
No another interesting point is Charles's own son on the 1871, Frederick
R Weare aged 17 born Milborne Port. Given his name on wonders if Ralph's
own son was named after his step-brother ? Speculation at this point.
Regards,
Sean

Hello Listers,
It would seem as if Raymond below was Frederick Raymond Chant born c.
1896/97 son of Ralph Chant of Buckland Newton, Dorset.
On the 1900 US census:
Fulton County, NY
Ralph R Chant born 1858, born England, glove manufacturer
Hannah Chant born 1865, born NY
James LR Chant born 1890 NY
Frederick R Chant born 1896 NY
Harriet Chant born 1897 NY
On the 1861 census of England:
Buckland Newton, Dorset
James Chant aged 53 ? winder born Buckland Newton
Harriet Chant aged 29 born Buckland Newton
Ralph R Chant aged aged 2 born BN
George Chant aged 7 months ? born BN
The 1900 US census suggests that Ralph migrated to the US during 1870.
He is listed on the 1880 census:
Charles WEARE Self M Male W 64 ENG Glove Manufacturer ENG
ENG
Harriet WEARE Wife M Female W 48 ENG Keeping House ENG
ENG
Ralph CHANT SSon S Male W 21 ENG Glove Cutter ENG ENG
George CHANT SSon S Male W 18 ENG Glove Cutter ENG ENG
Census Place District 1, Johnstown, Fulton, New York
Looks as though Harriet had remarried to Charles Weare. Did her first
husband James died before after the move to USA ? Looks as though Ralph
continued his stepfather's business.
More to do on this family.
Regards,
Sean

Hello Listers,
Trying to find out about James Chant of Burlington, NJ. Born c. 1845
England, migrated to US 1860 (according to the 1900 US census) and lived
in Burlington, NJ. He was married with children.
A quick look at the 1851 census of England does not clear up matters.
There was a James Chant born 1844 Stoke, Somerset son of Sampson and
Hannah. Could this be him ? There was also a James Chant born 1844
Whiteparish, Wilts. Could this be him ?
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
Came across these interesting entries in a page for deceased US
politicians. I have'nt followed them up as yet as regards their origins.
Anyone have ideas of these two ?
Chant, F. Raymond — of Bemus Point, Chautauqua County, N.Y. Democrat.
Alternate delegate to Democratic National Convention from New York,
1932. Presumed deceased. Burial location unknown.
Chant, George — of Illinois. Socialist. Candidate for U.S.
Representative from Illinois 11th District, 1924. Presumed deceased.
Burial location unknown.
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
The 1860 and 1880 census returns state that George was in New York
during the 1830's rather than the 1820's. 1880 return also states that
his father had been born in NY and his mother in Scotland. Unfortunately
earlier census returns to not give any further clues. However it looks
like this family may well go back to the 18th century as far it's
origins in the US are concerned.
George must have died between 1880 and 1900 as his wife, Maria is listed
on the 1900 return as a widow aged 75. She was still living in San
Joaquin, California.
Does anyone have information on this family ?
Regards,
Sean

Hello Michael,
Bell Street, Parish of All Saints, Southampton
William Chant aged 23 labourer not born Hants
Eliza Chant aged 20 not born Hants (although not 100 % sure on this last
detail)
Do you know if Eliza Trihorn was born in Hants or not ?

19-12-1891? He was a member of the same tribe as Thomas who married Laura
Dibben. He was Thomas's great nephew.
Cheers,
John

Do you know if Eliza Trihorn was born in Hants or not?
The IGI has Laverstock, Wilts 23-6-1820 and one of my New Zealand sources
says 25-6-1820 in Salisbury, Wilts.

Hi Sean,
This is something I have had on file for three or four years and fits in.
The web site where I found it doesn't seem to be there now so I can't ask for
authentication, but just pass it on for what it is worth.

Hello Listers,
As far as I am aware no none has looked at US slaves with the name
Chant....there are quite a few, including these on the 1870 census:
Emeline Chant Washington Ward 3, Washington, DC abt 1840 Virginia
Colored
Caroline Chant Not Stated, Gadsden, FL abt 1862 Virginia Colored
Henry Chant Not Stated, Gadsden, FL abt 1851 Virginia Colored Male
Margaret Chant Not Stated, Gadsden, FL abt 1840 Virginia Colored
Missouri Chant Not Stated, Gadsden, FL abt 1854 Virginia Colored
Peter Chant Not Stated, Gadsden, FL abt 1819 Virginia Colored

It might be interesting to follow these up at some stage.
