One wonders if this was Frederick son of Harry:
Name: CHANT, FREDERICK
Initials: F
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Able Seaman
Regiment: Royal Navy
Unit Text: H.M.S. "Princess Irene."
Date of Death: 27/05/1915
Service No: 208617
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 7.
Memorial: PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL
Does anyone know if this is not son of Harry ? Unfortunately the record
does not show age or next of kin.

Hello Listers,
On the 1901 census Harry still at Newhaven aged 52, still driving steam
cranes. There are more children.
Thomas aged 7; Victor G aged 6 and Minnie aged 3 all born Newhaven.
Harry's son William is now married himself, living next door aged 22
working as a house painter, wife Jate aged 24 and eldest child Alfred W
aged 3 months born Newhaven.
There are number of Harry's children listed on the 1891 and not on the
1901 census, namely Frederick; Nelson and Jane. Did they die young ?

Hello Listers,
I came across this on the net, a wonderful photo of
"Harry Chant with his Railway Quay steam crane, probably in the 1880s.
Stand at Bickerstaff's fish shop on the west bank and look across the
harbour at the opposite quay and that is where this antique crane would
have been. It is a fixture, but notice how it is conveniently positioned
between the railway wagon and the ship moored alongside."
This begs the question of course where are the Sussex researchers out
there ? As most of you will know there was a significant 19th and 20th
century CHANT presence in Sussex. Perhaps some time should be spent on
this branch. John you will recall that the other day we had a birth in
Chichester when looking at John Chant born at Bagshot, Surrey. His
mother was born there, with the possibility that his father was too.
When I get a chance I will have a look for a Harry the steam crane
driver !
Regards,
Sean

Hello Listers,
Has anyone researched this chap? Do a search on 'google.com' and you'll
find
out what a brainbox he was - sadly not one of my kin! He was born
31/10/1896
in St. Thomas, Ontario. His father was also Sperrin Chant, born 1860, and
mayor of St. Thomas 1901-1902.
Sperrin senior was one of twelve children of Noah William Chant 1816
Somerset
- 1899 Bruton, Ontario and Harriet Laskey who he married in 1849. The
only
Noahs we are aware of are in John Howarth and Les Pratt's line. Do we
know if
this Noah stems from that line?
There is a Noah on the Ontario 1871 census shown as a farmer originating
in
England. From his age it could be Sperrin's father. This also looks a
possibility from the military record.

Hello John and Beryl,
Fair enough regarding not sending data without permission, however can
we clear up the 1842 versus 1849 marriage ?

Sean

Hello Philip,
First of all well done on your webpage. It is very interesting and
detailed and informative.
I have been researching the name Chant for sometime, and regularly
contribute to forums and mailing lists on the net. My main concern is
with a branch of the family centred on Sherborne, Dorset. I am fairly
certain there is no direct connection between your branch and "my"
branch. I am married to a Chant, her family departed Sherborne in 1849
to settle here in NSW, Australia.
A few years ago I came across a Chant family here in NSW whom I quickly
realised were not part of my own, but were descended from a Thomas and
Alexander Chant, who it later turned out were descended from William
Chant and Elizabeth Male from Somerset. As you will know it seems as if
William died in England leaving Elizabeth and her young children. She
came with Thomas and Alexander during the 1850's to South Australia,
where it turns out her eldest child Jabez had settled earlier. It looks
as though Elizabeth decided to follow Jabez probably after the death of
William. During the 1870's it looks as though Thomas and Alexander came
to NSW where they settled. Members of their family live within an hours
drive of me and I have visited them when I first started researching
some 10 years ago.
Anyhow getting to the main point I see you have come to the conclusion
that your Christopher Chant and the above William were brothers, sons of
Robert Chant and Sarah Kellaway. There is also a strong possibility that
they married sisters, Jane and Elizabeth Male. This would mean a direct
connection between your Canadian branch and William's in SA and NSW.
What are your thoughts on this Philip ? It would be tremendous to tie to
branches together like this, 160 years and oceans and continents apart.
Regards,
Sean Leyland
PS: Hope you don't mind I have also sent this to the CHANT mailing List
as I know there are interested parties there, and we have been
discussing these connections, both in the past and more recently.

So it looks like Robert Chant who married Elizabeth Boyd was from
Somerset but probably not the son of Onesiphorus Chant and Susannah?
Hi Sean and Christine,
I have very little on this family so am interested in where it originates.
My file starts in the days before I recorded sources but I do have a couple of
contacts who don't want to join the list.
Cheers,
John

Hi Jenny and Listers,
Just to clarify Jenny's posting Silas and Ann married 7-7-1817 in Middle
Chinnock.
We'll find her one day, Jenny, and THEN we'll be cousins ...
... perhaps ... because there is always the possibility that Ann was a widow
and Chant not her original name, whatever it says in the PRs.
Cheers,
John
No problem Sean ~ it was a useful exercise for me to refresh on what I do
know about my family, AND to renew the enthusiasm to get to Winchester
Records Office!
Keep up the good work

Can't answer this one Sean. I know he was a fireman in Newhaven. His son Ken
(health permitting) is visiting us in June from Stoke Staffordshire so I'll
try to remember to ask him.

Yes, sadly he was and one of my first family history quests was to locate

Hello Andy: One or two of the Middlesex Chants lived in Hove from the 1890s
and died there. One was Mary Ann Chant, born 1842 in Brentwood Essex. She is
in the 1891 Census, at 56 Norton Road, Sussex. Her mother MaryAnn Goldsmith
and her nieces FJL Chant and MaryAnn Burlison may be buried in Hove, and may
have lived there at the end of their lives. FJL Chant's death was registered
in Steyning in 1909.
By the early 1900s there were not many Chants left in this line, I don't
think, because most of the male children seem to have died young.
Regards, Jacqueline

Thanks Andy.
So did most of the Sussex Chants originate in Wilts and Hants ? I know
we have been discussing Christine's Harry who was from Hants. Are the
others also from Hants/Wilts. I guess I should look at census returns
etc.

Hello: In a similar vein - does anyone know whether there is a list anywhere
of the people buried in the Hove, Sussex cemetery? Or even a list of all
the 19th & early 20th century cemeteries in Hove and Brighton?

When I get a chance I will have a look for a Harry the steam crane
driver !
Regards,
Sean
