Hello Listers,
Further to the discussion on family of Charles Beck Chant. Son George
Chant who migrated to the US 1907. Found on the 1910 census:
Deerpark, Orange Co, NY
George H Chant, Head aged 24, born England, labourer in gas factory
Mary Chant, wife aged 24, born England
Lucy Chant, daughter aged 6 born England
Minnie Chant, daughter aged 4, born England
Charles Chant, son aged 2 yr and 8 mnths born England
Regards,
Sean
Hello John,
I had not realised until a further search of Ellis Island that other
members of Charles Beck Chant's family also went to the USA.
In fact Charles Snr himself went during 1906, with wife, daughters Lucy
and Alice and son Albert. However later records show that they came back
to England after 4 yrs in the USA. I wonder why they returned ? Was it
their intention to return ?
The following year 1907, the other son George Chant aged 22 went to the
USA, by then married with children. Ships manifest states:
SS Baltic:
George Chant, 22 yrs old, mechanic, nearest kin in England Aunt Polly
Netherwood of Barnsley, next of kin in US father Chas Chant of 52 Fowler
St Port Jervis, NY, born Barnsley
Polly Chant, wife aged 21
Lucy Chant, daughter aged 4
Minnie Chant, daughter aged 2
Charles Chant, son aged 2 months.
Presumably George and family remained. I will follow them up in later US
census in later postings.
As we know his sisters Lucy and Alice returned to the States during
1920. Perhaps this explains the later mention of 1913 as their year of
immigration on the 1930 census return ?
In 1922 return Charles and Theresa also returned, this time for a visit
of 6 weeks. Aboard the Adriatic.
Charles Beck Chant aged 66
Theresa Chant aged 67
The manifest states they had previously been in the States for 4 yrs.
Interestingly it also states that now Charles Snr is a colliery manager
at Ryhill, near Wakefield. It also states that Charles Netherwood Chant,
son is also living at Ryhill. So it looks as if he never went to the US.
I wonder what became of son Albert ? I wonder what became of son Robert
listed on the 1891 census. is he listed on the 1901 census ?
Regards,
Sean

Hello John:
On the 1930 census:
Deerpark, Orange County, New York.
William Chant, Head aged 70, widowed, aged 22 at marriage, born England,
migrated 1887, glove manufacturer
Lucy Chant, niece aged 47, single, born England, migrated 1913, no
occupation
Alice Chant, niece aged 37, single, born England, migrated 1913,
forelady in factory (lovely term forelady !)
Well that was a surprise, I was'nt expecting the 2 nieces Lucy and
Alice. I wonder who their father was, presumably a brother of William ?
If they did not migrate until 1913 they should turn up on the 1901
English census. In fact Lucy should also show up on the 1891 census. I
can't find any of the above on the 1920 US census.
Also 1930 census were:
Elizabeth Street, Deerpark, Orange Co, NY
William Henry Chant, Head aged 45, married at 28, born England, migrated
1887, manager of silk factory
Ada Chant, wife aged 45, married at 28, born New York
Ryall Chant, son aged 16, born New York
Virginia Chant, daughter aged 14, born New York
Mary J Ryall, mother in law, widowed, aged 80, born New York.
So we know how the son came by his first name !
For whatever reason I don't know I could not find any of William's
family on the 1910 or 1920 census. However on the 1900 census I found at:
Deerpark, Orange Co, NY (so clearly they remained there)
William B Chant, Head aged 40, born England, migrated 1887, manufacturer
Mary E Chant, wife aged 36, born England
William H Chant, son aged 15, born England, at school
Isabella Chant, daughter aged 6, born New York.
I presume John that this the family you were talking of. Where do they
fit into the Stoke grand scheme of things ?
I will follow up the 2 mystery nieces in a later posting.
Regards,
Sean

Hi Sean,
In 1930 I think this chap will be with second wife, Ida, if I have got the
right David. Comes from a Haselbury Plucknett family via Canada. I don't know
the antecedents of the Haselbury family and would like to find them.
Cheers,
John

Hi Sean,
This is a family from another Stoke-sub-Hamdon line which I haven't managed
to connect. For the sake of clarity I usually refer to it as the Thomas CHANT
and Mary VIRGIN line. (Used to call it the Mary VIRGIN line but can't now
since there is the 'newer' one in West Chinnock connections!)
Lucy 1882-1971 and Matilda Alice 1892-1987 were the daughters of Charles
Beck CHANT and Theresa NETHERWOOD. Charles was William's brother.
Wife Mary on that 1900 census was Mary Ellen HALLETT born about 1864
daughter of George HALLETT. She married William Beck CHANT at Norton-sub-Hamdon 1883.
Cheers,
John
P.S. for Pamela.
I was looking at Charles to try and find his death date but didn't succeed.
Instead I found a Charles Thomas CHANT death in Barnsley Registration
district in the March quarter of 1877 age 0. This looks very much like the loss of
the first child for Charles and Theresa who married there a year earlier. Do
you know if this was the case please?

Hi Sean,
This one looks like part of a family group on the 'Philadelphia' from
Southampton arriving New York 25.9.1909. They were bound for New Mexico.
Ethel Chant Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA 50 1879 England White Head
The family in 1909:
Thomas Chant 28y 9m
Ethel Chant 29y 8m
Wm. Chant 2y 1m
Arthur Chant 1y 2m
No William or Arthur on your list fits the children so, if they are alive in
1930 they must have thought themselves U.S. born. Thomas seems to have
passed away as Ethel is head of her household.
FreeBMD has not yet got details of the marriage or the two births as far as
I can see.
I have Thomas as son of the Thomas 1845 Bridgwater, who married Laura
Ormiston DIBBIN, the suffragette pal of George Bernard Shaw who we have mentioned
on the list before. I think it is part of one of my lines but can't be 100%
sure at this stage.
Any further information would be most welcome.
Thanks,
John
Hi Sean,
I think these two are Pamela's. The elder is William Beck CHANT born
17.9.1860 in Stoke-sub-Hamdon and the younger, his son William Henry, baptised
Norton-sub-Hamdon 17.8.1884.
It may be worthwhile seeing if William junior has any family, please. I have
nothing recorded for him.
Thanks,
John
Hullo Sean and John,
Thrilled to see the information re Mark Chant, brother of my grandfather Alfred. My mother knew he went to America but had little other info. She thinks one of his children may have been a doctor. The 1881 census data showing Sarah Stagg and Robt. Stagg as boarders was really interesting. One of Alfred and Mark's sisters, Angelina, migrated to Australia, arriving in Victoria in May 1881. She was married to William Stagg on 11 May 1881 in Adelaide. She apparently was engaged to him in England. Does anybody know anything else about the Stagg family in Stoke sub Hamdon?
According to Alfred's birth certificate his mother's maiden name was Gard not Gerrard as is sometimes used. Again is there any information available re her family please?
Many thanks for your help - it is much apreciated! I don't have your experience but if you think I can assist with any details just ask!
Regards,
Prue
Hello Sherron,
Thanks for your reply and background information on George. It is all
clearer now. On Theodore Chant.....could this be his birth index ?
Births Mar 1872
CHANT Theodore Mintern Yeovil 5c 534
I think his middle name of Mintern is a dead giveaway.

Gill,
I agree about Alfred CHANT of 1849 - Martha and Norfolk are a red herring.
On your last E-mail you have Fred b.29/9/1856 and m.23/2/1874 but I've got b.10/11/1856 and m.23/2/1884. I don't know which is correct?
Janette,
William b.1856 - Lamplighter in Portland on 1901 Census (also sent to me by John CHANT in Canvey) - he doesn't appear to have ever been baptised in Oborne and doesn't appear in the 1861 or 1881 Census'.
Sorry, I don't know anythng of Robert CHANT and the "Simbla".

It has been claimed that he married Martha, from Norfolk but the only Arthur Chant married to a Martha born in Norfolk was 38 on the 1881 census, not 32 and they lived in St Albans, Hertfordshire; this Alfred was born in Sherborne. Katherine Chant, daughter aged 9 born NY
Phyliss Chant, daughter aged 4 born NY
So a bit more detail. I will chase up son Harry on the 1930 census asap.
I could'nt find Mark on the 1910 census of the US, then again I could'nt
find any Chant name on it born in England, so I am assuming that
ancestry have not fully indexed it yet. I don't have access to 1900
census at this stage.
I will look at the 1891 census a little later. As yet I don't have
access to 1871 census for Somerset.
Regards,
Sean
Hello John,
Found your man on the 1891 census. It must be him.
Percombe, Stoke, Somerset:
Phyliss Chant, Head, widowed, aged 60, laundress, born Monacute
Mark Chant, son aged 21, glover, born Stoke
Now we know where Mark's daughter go her name from !
On the 1881 census the family looked like this:
Phillis CHANT Head M Female 45 Montacute, Somerset,
England Laundress
Alford CHANT Son U Male 19 Martock, Somerset,
England Ag Lab
Ann E. CHANT Daur Female 17 Stoke, Somerset, England Machinist
(S)
Mark CHANT Son Male 12 Stoke, Somerset, England Scholar
Sarah J. STAGG Boarder U Female 28 Stoke, Somerset, England D
omestic Servant
Robt. STAGG Boarder U Male 14 Stoke, Somerset, England Ag Lab
Dwelling Castle
Census Place Stoke Under Hambdon, Somerset, England
Still does'nt let us know who Mark's father was ? I assumed Alford above
is Alfred.
Regards,
Sean

Hi Sean,
Thanks.
Alfred as in the line that Prue Smith has now introduced to the list.
Cheers,
John
Hi Sean,
Could we have a bit more on this chap please? I'd like to know if he had a
family as I think he is one of mine. Found an obituary today which suggests he
may be the same as the son of Joel CHANT and Phyllis nee GERRARD or GARD.
Can't find an entry on the Ellis Island site or him on the 1880 US census on
line but he would have been a bit young then!
Thanks,
John
