Hello John,
I am not sure if this helps, however I found your man on the 1871 census:
Surrey House, The Strand, St Clements Danes, London
He is listed as a guest:
James Chant, married, aged 62, retired emigration officer, born Leigh,
Essex.
So he is married by 1871. His wife, listed as Eleanor Chant is living at
nearby Neal Street,
Eleanor Chant, Head aged 45, lodging house keeper, born Caernarvon, Wales
Fanny Roberts, niece aged 13, born Liverpool
As I say I am not sure if this helps with James's origins.
I could'nt find neither James or Eleanor on the 1891 census.
Regards,
Sean

Hello John: Re your query about family connections for James Chant b
1808-09. I wondered whether the following record would pertain to that
James' father?
A deed for Foreshore & Sea Grounds at Southend, Essex appears to have
assigned the remainder of a 500 yr term for the property. It looks as if
part of it goes to James Chant, gentleman, but I'm not great at figuring
out the intent of some of these old records, so maybe not. In any case,
James Chant is mentioned. It looks as if the reassignment follows the
death of John Going, bargemaster. Dated 16 September, 1816. (from SEAX
online). SEAX also has two more documents re this property (dated 24,25
March, 1825). These appear to related to a mortgage transfer on this
property (again maybe not). These documents indicate that James Chant,
gentleman, now lives in Corbets Tey, Upminster. He is trustee for Mary
Eliza Hill Woodrow, spinster, of Sloane St, Chelsea, Middlesex, the
mortgagee.
Regards, Jacqueline
Hello Listers,
We are all well aware of the vagaries of transcription errors, however I
think this one takes the biscuit, a certain Mary Chant on the 1891 is
listed as being born at Merroit, Somalia.
Sean
Hello Listers,
I should have checked this before posting. I found this on the FreeBDM:
Marriages Dec 1892
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Biggerstaff William Aston 6d 525
Biggesrstaff William Aston 6d 525
CHANT Minnie Aston 6d 525
Endall Albert George Aston 6d 525
Hirons Annie Maria Aston 6d 525
This looks like Minnie daughter of Stephen Chant. Can anyone confirm
from the 1901 census whether or not Minnie married William Biggerstaff
(great name !!!!) or Albert Endall.
Still not sure who the Minnie in California is

Sean

Hello Listers,
Whilst looking at the US census tonight I came across a Minnie Chant
boarding in California on the 1900 census, born 1875 in England. The
census return states she migrated to the USA during 1899. She is listed
as single.
This might be her on the 1881 census

Anyone any ideas ?
The family is still in Warwick on the 1891 census. Can anyone do a check
on the 1901 census to either confirm or rule out this Minnie ?
Does anyone have any connection with the above family ?

Hello again Christine,
Oops.....looked on the next page and found your man:
Hanover Street, Kentish Town:
John Kingwell Chant, Head, aged 37, railway porter, born Odcombe
Emily Chant, wife aged 29, born Odcombe
Emily Harriett Chant, daughter aged 6, born Odcombe
Lucy Chant, daughter aged 3, born St Pancras, London
Robert William Chant, son aged 1, born St Pancras, London.
This should help Christine. So who is the other John Chant on the 1871,
aged 24 also born at Odcombe, who was also living at Kentish Town ?
Do you need either of these families on the 1891 census Christine ?
Regards,
Sean

Hello Listers,
Here is one of those frustrating CHANTs whose family connections are not to
be found. I live in Essex and this chap appears on the county records office
web site search. He is always a single chap. On the 1881 he has a wife at least
although he has moved away from Leigh on Sea. Please has anyone any ideas or
have a missing James born 1808/09?

Hi Sean,
I think this may be Lucy in the 1881 in the Borough at Montacute. Can you see
what the position looks like in 1891 please?
By 1901 she is married and I think this is the right husband.

On Free BMD the marriage is HUMPHREYS September 1893 quarter St Pancras
There are five Hutchings families on the 1881 census in Montacute. Sean can
you identify Alfred please and his wife Ellen BROCKWAY on the 1891? I have five
children born Montacute and Odcombe, one of whom, Charles, married a CHANT
cousin in my line. These other Hutchings may be related.
Thanks,
John

Hi Sean,
As Christine introduced this lass of whom I knew nothing, I looked to see
what happened to her. I think I have it but should like to know if the family are
in Wales in 1891 please. I know some Somerset stonemasons went that way for
work and if Samuel and Emily are there it would confirm that Oliver is theirs.
I think he is anyway as Emily had a brother Oliver born 1872 St Pancras.

John

Hi Christine and Sean,
I have that John would still have been married to Emily (daughter of Robert
1808 Odcombe and Harriet) as she didn't die until the December quarter of 1873
in St Pancras. John married Charlotte (Creffield) June quarter 1875.
Cheers,
John
Thanks Janette,
I was waiting for someone else as well to draw the conclusion that there were
two Georges. It may be the same chap with two wives as you say but I should
expect some of family one to be still around at the time of family two so have
not connected the line yet.
Cheers,
John

Anyone got anything on parents or

Hello John & Joan etc.,
Re the mystery George born c.1802 I'd already found George
chris.30.10.1803 son of James & Mary in my main file. This George
marr.25.7.1824 West Chinnock to Ann Hallett & had 11 children from
1825-1846 & the other George c.1802 born West Chinnock who married
13./2/1825 in Chiselborough to Sarah Hayward chris.1802 had 7 children
between 1825 & 1839. I compared the 2 families & found Mark born 1827
..death date not known for George & Sarah & George & Ann had a Mark 1835.
I got George & Sarah's marriage date from the IGI ages ago so mightn't be
correct.
I was thinking maybe George had 2 wives as the 1st six or so children
of each were born about the same time.
George's marriage to Sarah is still a mystery & his parents too.
Regards,
Janette in Oz.
Hello John,
Thanks for your reply. I have come a cross a likely suspect, a 35 yr old
Joseph Chant of Yeovil, born Sherborne, occupation listed as publican,
so he has left behind the murky world of chimney sweeping. I have'nt had
a chance to look at the rest of the household yet. I will do soonish.
Details on Joseph's family back in Sherborne was given during earlier
postings on Dorset 1891 census messages.
Regards,
Sean

Hello again Listers,
I'm not on the ball tonight. Just realised that the Mary Chant living
with Joseph on the 1891 census at Yeovil is probably his sister, listed
as a 12yr old on the 1881 census at Sherborne. Mary is not listed on the
1891 with her family at Sherborne. Given the fact that Joseph's "wife"
Louisa Jane Burge's age of 40 is probably wrong, so might be Mary's
given age of 42...it must be 22.
Any thoughts Michael on this family ?
Regards,
Sean

Hello Listers,
Having transcribed all Chant names living in Dorset on the 1891 census,
it is time to list those born in Dorset but living elsewhere. This entry
might be of interest to Michael. On the surface it is an intriguing.
Peter Street, Yeovil:
Joseph Chant, Head aged 28, sweep, born Sherborne, Dorset
Jane Burgess, ? aged 40, born Yeovil
Mary U Chant, ? aged 42, born Yeovil
The census transcription offers nothing as regards their relationship of
either Jane or Mary to Joseph. Neither does it state whether they are
single or married. Most unusual.
After trying the 1881 census for further information. I came up with
this:
Phillip CHANT Head M Male 33 Oborne, Dorset, England Chimney
Sweep
Makala CHANT Wife M Female 38 Sherborne, Dorset,
England Wife
Joseph CHANT Son U Male 14 Sherborne, Dorset,
England Scholar
Mary CHANT Daur Female 12 Sherborne, Dorset, England Scholar
Lucy CHANT Daur Female 9 Sherborne, Dorset, England Scholar
Edward CHANT Son Male 7 Sherborne, Dorset,
England Scholar
Emma CHANT Daur Female 6 Sherborne, Dorset, England Scholar
Ethel CHANT Daur Female 4 Sherborne, Dorset, England
Hubert CHANT Son Male 3 Sherborne, Dorset,
England
Minnie CHANT Daur Female 1 Sherborne, Dorset,
England
Dwelling Back Lane
Census Place Sherborne, Dorset, England
There is a slight discrepancy regarding Joseph's age, however you will
notice that his father's was also a sweep. On the 1891 census there is
no Joseph living with Phillip's family at Sherborne. However who are the
mysterious Jane and Mary living with Joseph at Yeovil on the 1891
census ? Michael we have discussed this branch before, believing them to
originally be from the neighbouring village of Oborne, and not "our"
branch of the family.
Does anyone have Joseph on the 1901 census ?
Regards,
Sean
