Hello Listers,
More from the 1891 census of Dorset:
Bridge; Sturminster Newton:
George Robinson, head, single aged 55, solicter's clerk, born
Christchurch, Surrey
Martha Chant, servant, single aged 52, domestic servant, born Piddle
Hinton, Dorset.
Whilst the 1891 census suggests that Martha had not married, the 1881
census reveals that she had indeed been married:
Martha CHANT Head M Female 44 Piddle Hinton, Dorset,
England Laundress
Merina CHANT Daur Female 15 Marnhull, Dorset,
England Dress Makers Apprentice
Dwelling Burton St
Census Place:Marnhull, Dorset, England
Does anyone have Martha on the 1901 census ? Does anyone know who she
was married to ?
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
This is the next installment of 1891 entries for the name Chant in
Dorset....sorry it is taking so long to get this information to the
list....you know how it is.
Anyhow this should be of particular in interest ot Michael.
The Terrace:
Sarah Chant, Head, widow, aged 50, dressmaker, born Shepton Mallet,
Somerset
Emma Chant, daughter, aged 21, glover, born Sherborne.
Sarah of course was the widow of Wilfred Chant, who died during 1869 at
Sherborne. Wilfred was a grandson of William Chant and Hannah Phillips
who have been discussed at length on the list. Michael what I find
interesting is that Sarah's residence is at Castleton, where of course
many of your Chant family lived, including your James Chant. Sarah and
Emma lived right next door to The Castle, where the Digby family still
lived.
Although there has been quite a bit written on this family in past
postings, just to refresh people's memories: On the 1881 census the
family looked like this:
Sarah CHANT Head W Female 40 Shepton Mallet, Somerset,
England Dressmaker
Frank CHANT Son U Male 16 Sherborne, Dorset, England Newsboy
To Smith & Son
Annie CHANT Daur Female 13 Sherborne, Dorset, England Halfday
In Domestic Service
Emma CHANT Daur Female 11 Sherborne, Dorset, England Scholar
Dwelling: Hound St.
Census Place: Sherborne, Dorset, England
On the 1901 census the family looked like this:
Trendle Street, Sherborne:
Wilfred Chant, Head aged 39, painter, born Sherborne
Donald F Chant, son aged 11, born Sherborne
Sarah Chant, mother aged 60, born Shepton Mallet
Wilfred's wife Sarah Ann and son Wilfred Jnr where travelling at the
time of the census, listed as "visitors" at a Hotel at Shepton Mallet,
which of course was Sarah Snr's birthplace. Listers will be aware that
Wilfred listed above and his son Wilfred both migrated to the USA during
the early years of the 20th century.
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
Further to my last posting on Noah Chant of Sherborne. He had a son
Robert who appears to disappear from the records after 1851. He is
listed on the 1851 census as a 17 yr old. Does anyone have a death date
for Robert...or perhaps access to the 1861 census which might clear up
the matter. I have yet to locate Robert on later 1881 or 1891 or 1901
census, therefore my thoughts are that he died as a young man....or
might have migrated to ?
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
This is an old one, however I thought I might try again. For quite some
time we have discussed William Chant and Hannah Phillips line of
Sherborne. They had a son Noah Chant: 1811-1870 who married Eliza Slade.
Quite a few us, including Michael have been active in tracking down
descendents of Noah. One of Noah's grandsons, Frank Chant went to London
as a young man to work on the railways. He married Florence Agnes Hatton
during 1890 in London. The family are listed on the 1901 census at
Battersea:
-Frank Chant: 36 born Sherborne: Railway Engine Driver
-Florence Chant: 37 born Torquay, Devon
-Ernest Chant: 10 born Twickenham, Middlesex
-Frank Chant: 8 born Twickenham
-William Chant: 6 born Lambeth, London
-Gladys Chant: 2 born Battersea
-Florence Chant; 6 months born Battersea
There are probably further children born after this date. I would dearly
like to find out what became of Frank and his descendents. Anyone with
any ideas ? Any thoughts Michael ?

Sean

There is a Charles Edward B Chant born Elham district September 1870 quarter
on Free BMD who looks like the son. Subsequently I found him again on the
Ellis Island site 15-03-1906 on the 'Carmania' from Liverpool in transit to
Toronto, Canada and described as a bookkeeper from Hackney. Janette may remember
that I asked about him on the list in January 2002. Well here he is. It is
interesting that he showed a false age on his attestation papers, but they do give
us Ida's married name. She married September 1903 quarter in Hackney, Augustus
Frederick ROBINSON.
http://data2.archives.ca/cef/ren1/013854a.gif
Frank Melton Chant born Elham district March 1872 quarter married Isle of
Wight December 1897 quarter Edith Grace BROWN born 1874. On the 1901 census they
are shown as Frank born Folkestone and Edith, Newport I.o.W. with a 3 year old
Leslie born Southampton, all living at Portswood. Frank is a bank clerk.
By 1901 Esther is living in Hackney with Ida and Ernest both born Folkestone.
Ernest is a tea merchant.
I could not find Edward in 1901 but there is a Hackney registered death in
December 1899 age 59 of an Edward Milton Chant, who is undoubtedly Edward Melton
Chant posted above. His marriage to Esther Cottee BARRETT took place in
Islington district March 1868 quarter.
Also in 1901 there is a 55 year old Frederick, an accountant, born South
Molton in Islington who may well be kin, as may be a 48 year old Ellen still
living in South Molton.
Does anyone know the family line please? I have ventured into Devon before
only briefly.
Cheers,
John

Hello Listers especially Andy
With the invaluable help of a BLAKE researcher, Irene Dredge, I believe I
have found where I 'belong' in the CHANT scheme of things.
Irene sent me the an extract from the Chilcomb 1851 census:
Henry CHANT 23 b. Upham ) [m. 14Aug1848 Romsey. Henry CHANT's
father stated as James BLAKE]
Mary CHANT 24 b. Romsey ) [bride Mary Jane BULPITT father James
BULPITT]
Henry (Harry) CHANT 1 b. Chilcomb (my gt. grandfather)
Oliver CHANT 20 b. Tytherley
neighbours:
James BLAKE 44 b. Bagshot
Mary BLAKE 43 b. Tytherley
Ann BLAKE 20 b. Tytherley
This ties in with the marriage Andy gave me of James BLAKE and Mary CHANT
5Apr1831 in Fisherton Anger; Ann being their daughter and half sister to
Henry, and b. 1831 Tytherley. (IGI)
Oliver CHANT also in Chilcomb 1851 is I believe the son of George & Phebe &
bpd. 17 Apr1831 East Tytherley, and therefore Mary CHANT/BLAKE's nephew,
with she and George being from parents George & Margaret (Edwards?) m.West
Tytherley 1793?. (Mostly IGI entries)
I'm hoping one of the List experts will be able to confirm/refute my feeble
findings! regards to all Chris.

I had a look with no luck. Perhaps St Pancras comes under London ? That
will be online for me soon. I will have another look then.

Hello Michael,
Just carrying on from my earlier postings. On George Chant (of Nether
Compton) married on the 24th June 1765 at Sherborne to Mary Rogers. For
them I have the following children, all baptised at Sherborne:
i) Jane Chant bap 3rd Oct 1767
ii) William Chant bap 20th July 1771
iii) Sarah Chant bap 3rd Feb 1773
iv) Susanna Chant bap 1st Feb 1777
v) George Chant bap14th August 1779
vi) Samuel Chant bap 22nd July 1882
vii) James Chant bap 28th May 1787
Do you have any more children for George and Mary ?
I have probable burial dates for:
George Chant: buried 6th Jan 1827 at Sherborne aged 87 (therefore born
c. 1840)
Mary Chant: buried 31st Dec 1817 at Sherborne aged 78 (born c. 1839)
Is this what you have ? Any thoughts on these Michael ?
Regards,
Sean

Your kind offer for lookups on the 1871 Middlesex census - I am looking for
Charles Chant born 1817 Odcombe - in 1881 he is aged 64 living in Weedington
Road St Pancras.
Your time is much appreciated.

Hello Michael,
I presume you have seen the great baptismal transcriptions on the Dorset
Online Parish page; for the parish of Long Burton, Dorset. This of
course is where you thought our George Chant may have originated from.
On first look there are many Chant baptismal records for the early years
of the 18th century. Have you seen the transcriptions ? if so what are
you thoughts ?
Interestingly the name Noake crops up many time. For the clarity of
other listers, George Chant son of the above George of Long Burton
married Elizabeth Noake at Sherborne during 1799.
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
More information on Sarah Chant, widow of Wilfred. She died at Sherborne

I can't find either Harry or his wife on the 1891 census on FreeCEN even though the area they seem to have lived in at the time has been uploaded, but as the wills index says he was a "retired ships steward" maybe he wasn't in the country. This still wouldn't account for his wife though.
