Hello Listers,
I now have access to the 1871 census for Middlesex, Hertfordshire,
Channel Islands, Isle of Man and parts of Wales.
This might be of interest to John, I have a Joseph Chant, aged 33 yrs
old born Stoke, Somerset living at Cheshunt, Herts, together with wife
Jane aged 35 also born Stoke and four children, mostly born Middlesex
and Islington. if you want further details let me know. There is also an
Anthony Chant, born West Chinnock aged 30 living at Broxbourne, Herts.
Sean
Hello Listers,
More from the 1891 census in Dorset:
Again London Rd, Oborne, next door to the Woolmington family, where
Louisa Chant aged 13 I posted earlier today.
George Chant, Head aged 73, widowed, agricultural labourer, born Oborne
Annie Stacey, grandaughter aged 14, born Yorkshire
George CHANT Head M Male 63 Oborne, Dorset, England Ag Laborer
Ann CHANT Wife M Female 61 Oborne, Dorset, England
Harriet POPE Boarder W Female 78 Oborne, Dorset, England
Annie STACEY Gd Daur Female 4 Prospect Hoy Land, York,
England
Dwelling: London Road
Census Place: Oborne, Dorset, England
I thought that the 1881 census might shed light on the parentage of
Annie Stacey, however to no avail. It seems likely that Annie's mother
was a daughter of George and Ann Chant. I was intrigued with Harriet
Pope, boarder. As Michael will know the Pope family are connected with
the Chant family at Sherborne. I wonder if there is any connection. Any
ideas Michael ? You will recall that Harriet Chant, possible daughter of
our George and Elizabeth Chant of Sherborne married Alexander Pope
during 28th Jan 1831 at Sherborne. However our Harriett Chant was
baptised during 1813 at Sherborne, making her 68 ish during 1881 rather
than 78.
Regards,
Sean
Sorry, got this one wrong. Richard Stacey was the 22 year old labourer,
Philip was 9, Charles and Earnest both 5 - probably twins - so Annie was
possibly one small child too much!

Hi Sean,

Hello Listers,
More from the 1891 census of Dorset.
Again at Oborne, close to the James Chant I posted earlier:
London Road, Oborne:
Edmund Wollmington, Head aged 58, single, on own means, born Nether
Compton, Dorset
Sarah Woolmington, cousin aged 53, single, housekeeper, born Newton,
Somerset
Louisa Chant, servant aged 13, domestic, born Oborne.
On the 1881 census Louisa looked like this:
John CHANT Head M Male 35 Horne, Dorset, England Ag Lab
Marian CHANT Wife M Female 37 Wincanton, Somerset,
England
William CHANT Son Male 16 Sherborne, Dorset,
England Ag Lab
Maria CHANT Daur Female 12 Sherborne, Dorset, England Scholar
Herbert CHANT Son Male 5 Horne, Dorset, England Scholar
Louisa CHANT Daur Female 3 Horne, Dorset, England
Ellen CHANT Daur Female 1 Horne, Dorset, England
Dwelling No 43
Census Place Idmiston, Wiltshire, England.
I am assuming that "Horne" is a transcription error for Oborne !
Does anyone have a connection with this family ?
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
More from the 1891 census of Dorset:
Post Office; Oborne:
James Chant, Head aged 68, widowed, Post man, born Oborne, deaf
Kate Chant, daughter aged 22, post mistress, born Oborne
On the 1881 census they look very similar, except James had obviously
picked up the postman's job inbetween....and lost his hearing !
James CHANT Head W Male 57 Oborne, Dorset, England General Gardener
Kitty CHANT Daur Female 12 Oborne, Dorset, England Scholar
Dwelling: London Road
Census Place: Oborne, Dorset, England.
Does anyone have further information on this family ? Does anyone know
who James's wife was ? Did he have other children ?
Regards,
Sean
Hi Christine,
I have had a good look but can't identify any of them, sorry!
Trouble is I know I have seen Penninah in the past. It is a rare name and
does not crop up in anyone's genealogy very much. There is usually a spate of an
unusual name like this in an area and then it dies out. This one went very
quickly.
It is like Mrs Salome CHANT as posted by Sean the other day: who has a member
spliced to a Salome?
Cheers,
John
Hello Listers,
More from the Dorset 1891 census:
West Stour:
Walter Chant, Head aged 28, agricultural labourer, born Dorset, Marnhull
Emily Chant, wife aged 26, born Marnhull
Winifred Chant, daughter aged 3, born Manrhull
Howard Chant, son aged 1. born West Stour
It looks as if this could be Walter and Emily's marriage record:
June 1886
AYLES Emily Sturminster 5a 431
Chant Walter Joseph Sturminster 5a 431
On the 1881 census Walter looks like this:
Joseph CHANT Head M Male 42 Marnhull, Dorset,
England Ag Lab
Salome CHANT Wife M Female 41 Marnhull, Dorset,
England Glove Maker
Walter J. CHANT Son U Male 18 Marnhull, Dorset,
England Ag Lab
William CHANT Son U Male 16 Marnhull, Dorset,
England Ag Lab
Elen J. CHANT Daur Female 13 Marnhull, Dorset,
England Glove Maker
Fred CHANT Son Male 10 Marnhull, Dorset, England Scholar
Joseph G. CHANT Son Male 2 Marnhull, Dorset,
England
Dwelling Burton St
Census Place Marnhull, Dorset, England
Does anyone have any connections with this family ? Does anyone have
Walter and Emily on the 1901 census ?
Regards,
Sean
Hello all ...
This is just a reminder, and some information to whet your appetite!!
The venue for our Family Reunion has been changed and will now be at the
Dalby Police Citizens Youth Club in Cooper Street on Easter Saturday and
Sunday the 10th and 11th April. We are asking for $5 each to help defray
cost of hiring the Hall. People are asked to bring any photos or Ancestry
information.
John CHANT and Jane (nee WITHYMAN) arrived on the "Cambodia" in Moreton Bay
1/8/1855 with their infant daughter Sarah. They settled in Dalby in 1862
where they remained for the rest of their lives. And in fact the Dalby
Cemetery is full of our Ancestors!!!!
Eliza SOLWAY arrived in Moreton Bay 9/2/1857 on the "Parsee" and married
George Ishmael CHANT in 1861. They settled in Ipswich and had ten children.
Eliza died 1882 and he married Elizabeth SHELDON in 1861 and had a further
five children. George's parents were Isaac Muston CHANT and Mary TIZZARD.
Sarah Catherine CHANT married William Henry LAWRENCE who arrived 28/7/1852
on the "Argyle". They settled in Ipswich.
Some of the connecting surnames include LAWRENCE, ALFORD, BROWN, GOODHEW,
ALLEN, ANDERSON, SALISBURY, SALWAY, STATHAM, HOCKEY, BOOL, DOBLE, STRONG,
PAYNE, TITMARSH, TIZZARD, TITMUS, BEST, SANKEY, WILLMENT, WILKES, ROWSWELL,
MALE, PORTER, GOODHEW, YARROW, MUDFORD, OSBORNE, THORNE, WOODLEY and many
many more.

That is where I got James from Michael.
Looks right particularly as a William is the witness.
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/link1902.htm
I am told there are one or two errors on these pages. There may be
transcription mistakes or incorrect entries in the original registers (in one place a
chap marries his sister, which is in the register) but it is yet another useful
source on the Internet so we can't be picky if someone is taking the time and
trouble to do something. Just means that if we are intensely interested in
that family we must do thorough checks ourselves.
There is this one:
1842
> Nov. 21 David CHANT?, yeoman, to Mary LITTLY, both of Bastard, by banns.
> Wit: George Littly, yeoman, Eliza Emerson, both of Bastard.
>
This should be Mary Littlejohn. I think this marriage has been mentioned in
the last few months. Someone who has looked at the registers has confirmed that
the registers were correct and the transcription wrong.
This was David of Joseph and Hannah nee Gard in my line.
Cheers,
John

Hallo again
Stray - Previous posting of Burial of Mary Chant of Stoke 20 Nov 1825 - I
spoke to soon - sorry - found more notes and I do have an age for her -
sixteen months. Hope that helps someone.
Unusual names - (Here is another one John) - does anyone have any record of
the birth of PENNINAH Chant who married Robert Young in 1824 in Odcombe?
Also does anyone have a record of the baptism of a MARGARET (Like Penninah
presumably born about around 1800) who married Luke Eglon in 1821 in
Odcombe?

Thanks Andy,
If not someone's now it will be one day. It is annoying but I know I have

found, but I don't think there is a tie in with this CHANT family.

Hello Michael
I have, based on 1881 census:

When you have looked these up and verified the information I should
appreciate you posting the results to the list so that I may use the input as a
'tick-back' to make sure I have recorded all these people correctly from the
information which was to hand at the time.
The information you have already posted suggests that you have been in
contact with Greg Chant who has William as Louisa's husband rather than James on the
other web site. I can't say which is right or even if the chap is William
James LINDSAY.
Cheers,
John
Listers,
Have put the following together from the Vital Records Index, IGI, S&DFHS Marriage and Burial Indexes. Anybody's line? They would appear to tie in with Sean's recent posting for this village from the 1881 and 1891 Census'.

Hello Listers,
More from the 1891 census of Dorset:
Burton Bradstock:
William J Cousins, Head aged 24, farmer, born Burton Bradstock
Henrietta Cousins, wife aged 25, born South Australia (yes that is what
it says !)
Henrietta M P Cousins, daughter aged, born Burton Bradstock
Jane Parsons, mother in law, widow, aged 45, living on own means, born
Burton Bradstock
Elizabeth Chant, grandmother, widow, aged 81, living on own means, born
Burton Bradstock
Interesting one this. Obviously Jane Parsons (nee ?) migrated to
Australia and returned. Why because she was widowed ?
Obviously William Cousins mother was ? Chant, daughter of Elizabeth
listed above and at this date unknown father.
The plot thickens further on the 1881 census. William Cousins is there
as a 14 yr old
Mary SAUNDERS Head U Female 20 Shipton Gorge, Dorset,
England Servant Unemployed
Henry C. SAUNDERS Son Male 2 m Bridport,
Dorset, England
William T. COUSINS Son Male 14 Burton Bradstock,
Dorset, England Farmers Son Scholar
Charles D. COUSINS Son Male 13 Burton Bradstock,
Dorset, England Farmers Son Scholar
Dwelling Village Street
Census Place Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England.
Quite clearly Mary Saunders, aged 20 can not be the mother of either
William or Charles Cousins. So at this stage their parents remain a
mystery.
The listing for Elizabeth Chant above just confuses the matter even more:
Elizabeth CHARD Head M Female 73 Burton Bradstock,
Dorset, England Independant
Jane F. PARSONS Daur Female 34 Burton Bradstock,
Dorset, England Governess
Emily F. FOX Daur Female 38 Burton Bradstock,
Dorset, England ((Grocers Wife))
William D. FOX Grandson Male 14 London, Middlesex,
England Scholar
Florence E. FOX Grand Daur Female 13 London, Middlesex,
England Scholar
Kate R. FOX Grand Daur Female 11 London, Middlesex,
England Scholar
Frank R. FOX Grandson Male 9 London, Middlesex,
England Scholar
Gertrude J. FOX Grand Daur Female 5 London, Middlesex,
England Scholar
Ethel A. FOX Grand Daur Female 4 London, Middlesex,
England Scholar
Isabella DOUGLAS Boarder U Female 18 Weymouth, Dorset,
England Pupil Teacher
Dwelling Darby Lane
Census Place Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England
For a start Elizabeth is Chard instead of Chant, however that could
quite easily be a transciption error. However Jane Parsons is now listed
as an unmarried daughter of Elizabeth, whereas on the 1891 census she is
William Cousins mother in law. No sign of Henrietta, born South
Australia, who is Jane's daughter according to the 1891 census.
However William's younger brother Charles Cousins turns up on the 1891
census at Burton Bradstock, aged 23 living with his parents:
Daniel Cousins aged 50, farmer, born Burton Bradstock
Fanny Cousins, wife aged 30, born Whitechurch
Charles Cousins, son aged 23, farmer, born Burton Bradstockl
Gwendoline Cousins, daughter aged 9 months, born Cogden
Fanny Barnes, niece aged 8, born Whitechurch
So obviously Daniel was married twice, Fanny being his second wife. His
first wife was ? Chant....maybe. This is a tricky one.
Can anyone shed any light on this family ? Does anyone have connections ?
Regards,
Sean
Listers,

Barzilla 1800
Hannah 1807
James 1808
Elizabeth 1811

Hello John,
Yes, that is his marriage. I have the certificate and his father is George,
a labourer so that certainly fits. He was 27 in February 1884, when he
married and 33 when he died in September 1890 so the Fred in Oborne would
certainly fit with this. Hopefully I can check a few more details in the
Birmingham archives in the next few days.
Best regards,
Gill
