There is no Sampson/Samson shown in the 1881 census born 1869 although there
is one(?) in 1879 which looks more like Thomas Chant and Mary Virgin line,
although I haven't got this family anywhere.

Hi Andrew and Michael ...
I know what you say about no connections, but on the CD Andrew sent me there
are lots.
For instance - Andrew has William Henry Lawrence and Sarah Catherine Chant
who were my great grandparents (their daughter Rosina Eliza being my
grandmother, who married William Thomas Woodley and their daughter Myrtle
married Arthur Freeman and these two people were my parents.) William and
Sarah then go back through Isaac Muston Chant and Mary Tizzard to Robert
Chant 1700 etc.
Andrew has Robert 1700 and therefore both John and I are in the same line.
Other connecting names which we both have include William CHANT and
Elizabeth MALE ... Thomas CHANT and Elizabeth TERRELL ... Walter CHANT and
Caroline FANE ... George CHANT and Rebecca DUNSTONE ... Richard CHANT and
Martha Thorne HOCKEY ... Graham CHANT and Caroline HANN ... Albert CHANT and
Margaret Joyce PRIDDLE - etc. etc. etc. I could go on forever!!!
I look forward to further correspondence.
Beryl Renton
Further to previous message I have found:
Charles R Chant b 1828 was the son of Robert Chant
born in England who had married Rebecca Robie b: in
Nashua, New Hampshire.
So the Challenge is now to find out where Robert Chant
born in England circa 1800+ was from.

I had a query recently from a gentleman in the US who knew
only sketchy details of his family line.
I have been able to help him back to Charles A Chant born about 1854
in Massachusetts according to the 1880 US Census index.
It seems likely Charles A Chant's father was Charles R Chant b <1828>
Massachusetts.
Does anyone have anything on this Chant family in Massachusetts or data from
US census records 1880 or earlier?

Hi Christine.
Firstly I'm not aware of a list of missing
registers so thanks for that.
In some cases - yes, missing registers would be creating
a number of brickwalls in some lines. In other cases it's
just a lack of research to connect to established lines
mainly with those stuck in the 1800's.
With the early origins it is more difficult as Parish
registers alone wont help establish links between say
Henstridge branches and other Somerset lines.

Hello Michael
My apologies but I cant find a note of whether I had passed this information
regarding Odcombe parish registers to you. I did confirm this with the
record office many years ago that the registers are missing for the
following:-
Baptisms 1729 -1734
Marriages 1728 - 1743
Burials 1729 -1734
Does it appear that missing registers are the main problem in possibly tying
the eleven south west region families together rather than just the normal
missing entry problems?
Not that it would solve the problem but perhaps we could compile a list of
known missing registers and then we could at least get an idea of where our
brickwalls are, or has this already been done?

Hello Jacqueline
No - the Revd Charles is not my line but I was contacted by another
researcher asking if I had a connection and I thought I would try and help
her by seeing if anyone on the list had a connection. I have told her about
the Chant list so hopefully she may decide to subscribe. I am not sure of
her actual connection but she had the information that his Father was Samuel
born 1831 and his Mother Fanny Tisley born 1838. Apparently Charles and Rose
emigrated to Australia and then to New Zealand. Anyway I have passed your
email address on to her so she can contact you - hope that is okay.

Hello All,
I was interested in this listing of Chants because two of the children were
listed as born in Yoevil around 1862 and 1854. I have been through the LDS
Yoevil Church Records for 1838-61 looking for my branch (youngest children of
George Chant and Harriet Seymour Minterne and all children of James Chant and
Elisabeth Rowe Wills should have been born in Yoevil or nearby Holwell) and found
very few listings and these older children of Samson Chant were not among
those few.
Do you know what your sources are as it may give me a lead on my Chants?
Thank You.

Hi Andrew
Consider searching the surrounding Parishes for Henstridge
branch's for possible 1688-1713 and 1744-1765 Marriage, Baptism
and Burial info. Also occupation may have something to
do with a move. Otherwise sometimes a Parish was covered
by a vicar/Encumbant from another Parish. Records of may
have then been recorded in the Parish Register the vicar
was from (Sometimes Parish boundaries changed eg Castleton
often covered by Sherborne, Dorset was for a time covered
by Odcombe in Somerset)
With Sherron Biddle/Richard Rogers line it turned out
the occupation of Mole Catcher resulted in the family
moving often being contacted to rid Parishes of Moles.
Moving from Odcombe to Yetminster then
Puncknowle/Piddletown then Haydon/Holwell/Sherborne.
Yes aware your ideas on the Jonathon Chant of Wiltshire
possible link to Henstridge Chant's. It has merit. What
would entice Jonathon to move from Henstridge to Wiltshire
I wonder?
Happy Hunting
Michael

Michael,
I'm confused as well. I've replied off-line to Beryl.
The Wiltshire lines may connect back to Stowell in Somerset - 1 directly
(Scott BROUGHER's) whilst mine and Gordon WALKER's possibly via Henstridge
No CHANT's recorded in Henstridge for 1688 to 1713 or 1744 to 1765 - the 2
times we need to know about ! - but the family names of Jonathon and Richard
appear here and not in Wiltshire before these times).

Here we go again
I'm confused here Beryl as Andrew descends from the
Wiltshire Chant's. Would love to see this CD. Also welcome
others family tree data to help people's lines connect.
My postal address is :
P.O. Box 2220, Kardinya, Perth WA Aust. 6110
Please remember when exchanging info that many early
Chant researchers used to mix up family lines because
they had not searched all of the county parishes records
or piggybacked on others work which might in itself have
been inaccurate Those researching now are still human
and errors can occur and still not all the Parishes
have been searched. Also non conformist religious groups
such as Jews, Methodists and Quakers are often overlooked.
For Dorset I am fixing this problem with the Dorset Parish Transcriptions
website as all the Church of England Parish
registers are on film at the Dorset Record Office. You cant
buy microfiche of the registers like you can for other
counties or see them at our local FHS making Dorset
research far more difficult.
Often the early errors in Chant research are found in the
IGI, Ancestral File, mainly from the Whiteheads research as
well as others sending in their wishful thinking etc much
of which are the sources for this continuing furphy on the
Somerset branches at West Chinnock and Stoke Sub Hamdon
Robert Chant b 1719 was a bachelor (NOT MARRIED)
of Stoke Sub Hamdon married Susannah Gott/Tett?
in 1760 and so Robert did not earlier marry an
Elizabeth circa 1737 in West Chinnock as some suggest!!!
If you think they did find the circa 1736/7 marriage
entry.
The West Chinnock Lines end with two Robert Chants.
1 Robert Chant b 1700 son of Mary Chant
(possibly base born ie a Bastard and therefor no
known father so the line cannot go back further
because earlier parish records are missing!!!!
HE IS NOT THE SON OF THOMAS CHANT AND MARY VIRGIN
Married in 1707 from STOKE SUB HAMDON so does not
go back to William Chaunt and Alice White married
in 1584.
Robert married Cecily surname unknown because marriage
register before 1744 is MISSING!!!!
2 Robert Chant born West Chinnock or nearby circa 1690/1710
married Elizabeth (surname unknown) circa 1737 is unknown
because pre 1744 West Chinnock marriage register entries
are missing.
This Robert and Elizabeth Chant had children
1738-1748 at West Chinnock
For those researching West Chinnock lines. If you want to
progress back further find out what became of the earlier records
which must have existed at one time because Baptisms start in the 1680's
There are now eleven different main Chant family lines from the
southwest region of England of which most researchers
descend from. At present none can be linked to each other.
These Are:
1 Henstridge, Somerset Chant's from 1700's
2 Marnhull, Dorset Chant's from 1709
3 Merriott, Somerset Chant's
4 Milborne Port, Somerset nr Dorset Chant's from 1759
5 Oborne, Dorset Chant's from 1760
6 Odcombe, Somerset Chant's from 1740's
(Evidence of the name here from 1509)
7 Sherborne, Dorset Chant's from 1765
earlier occurances from 1538+ seem to be
from Somerset families and died out.
8 Stoke Sub Hamdon, Somerset Chant's from 1584
- Via two brothers Thomas b 1710 and Robert b 1719
9 Stowell, Somerset Chant's
- posible origin of Wiltshire/Hampshire Chant lines
10 West Chinnock, Somerset Chant's
- Via Robert Chant b 1700 and ?
11 West Chinnock, Somerset Chant's
- via Robert and Elizabeth Chant 1737-1748
Chant's in Dorset at North Wootton, Everton etc
circa 1600's lines appear to have died out. Also
it appears Chant was more common in Somerset in
the 16th and 17th centuries (that's 1500's and 1600's)
than most people have considered.
There are random occurances of the name in other
areas of Dorset and Somerset which are probably
from missing sibling branches of the above families.
Most of the above nine areas are very close to each other
suggesting this was the area from which the name originated
back in the 13th and 14th centuries for these families.
People more research across Somerset is needed to fill
in the Gaps.
For instance all Stoke Sub Hamdon lines traced, descend
from Thomas Chant b 1630 through his son Thomas b 1665
Thomas Chant b 1630 Stoke had two brothers. Where are
their descendants now?
How many of you are missing info on sibling branches?
Until you find their burial entry you need to consider
they lived on to have families of their own.
I am happy to recieve data for Chant family lines. My
records are far from complete and these help me put
researchers in contact with people tracing the same
family lines.
Once you recieve data from other researchers. Try to
verify the data yourself from the sources given.
Transcription errors are common and it's more fun to
verify the info for yourself.

Hello Andrew ....
Could you please send me your address so that I can forward a CD to you?
Your ancestry definitely joins with mine, especially the William Henry
Lawrence marriage to Sarah Catherine CHANT - and also the Robert CHANT and
Cecily/Sisterly. William and Sarah were my great granddparents.
However, in the beginning of yours where you have Robert and
Cicily/Sisterly, there are different names in some cases and you have a
Robert marrying Susannah TETT. In the early stages of my research Susannah
TETT was supposed to be ruled out, but I am on the TETT list and have kept
ever so much TETT information, just in case.
Can you please let me know about this information and where it was
verified.
I have lots of names you do not have and you of course have plenty I have
not on my list.
I am still entering GOODHEW information and so far cannot begin to add
TIZZARD and TITMARSH.
Where do I stop???? There are now over 12500 names and I am confused......
Perhaps someone could tell me if I should break all this up and if so how to
go about it. I haven't even got most of my RENTONS on the LAWRENCE/CHANT
lot!!
Beryl Renton in Brisbane.
Michael,
I was thinking along those lines when I received my researchers' last report so I've already asked her to try the nearest parishes to Henstridge.
Unfortunately, Jonathon was only an "Ag. Lab.", he rented a 30 cottage in Britford/Homington, Wiltshire in the 1730's and borrowed 15 and a further 5 from a man in Salisbury before his death in 1759 - I've copies of documents from the WRO for all these.

Transcription errors are common and it's more fun to
verify the info for yourself.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hello Listers,
For those who don't subscribe to the Somerset list or those who have missed
it, there is an interesting site which has been mentioned. It is another
'village' type piece of research rather than family tree and, although there are
only a couple of CHANTs, there are a lot of related names and you may find
someone who had gone missing. For example there are 44 MUDFORDs as well as HALLETTs,
LEGGs, HANNs and LAWRENCEs, to name a few.
