Hi Sean
Yep the name Rhoda is the main clue that it is definately
a line from the Bradford Abbas Chant's from early 1800's

Hello Listers,
You might recall I posted a couple of weeks ago information regarding
Frank Chant of Sherborne, son of Wilfred Chant: 1838-1869 and wife Sarah
Colston. Frank was a grandson of Noah Chant: 1811-1870 of Sherborne, and
nephew of the Edward Chant on recent postings. Listers might also recall
that Frank's brother Wilfred Henry Chant migrated to the USA during 1911.
On the 1881 census Frank was listed at:
Hound Street, Sherborne:
-Sarah Chant , widowed aged 40 working as a dressmaker born at
Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
-Frank Chant, son aged 16 born at Sherborne working as a newsboy
for Smith and Son
-Annie Chant, daughter aged 13 born at Sherborne: halfday in
domestic service
-Emma Chant, daughter aged 11 born at Sherborne: scholar
John Chant found Frank on the 1901 census at
Battersea, London
-Frank Chant: 36 born Sherborne: Railway Engine Driver
-Florence Chant: 37 born Torquay, Devon
-Ernest Chant: 10 born Twickenham, Middlesex
-Frank Chant: 8 born Twickenham
-William Chant: 6 born Lambeth, London
-Gladys Chant: 2 born Battersea
-Florence Chant; 6 months born Battersea
John Chant also pointed out, he believes that Frank Chant married
Florence Agnes Hatton at Brentford Sep Qtr 1890. I have since located
Frank on the 1891 census at:
11, Station Gardens, Twickenham.
-Frank Chant aged 26, born Sherborne, working as a railway stoker
-Florence Chant, wife aged 27 born Torquay, Devon
-Ernest Victor Chant, son aged 4 months, born Twickenham
-Lucy Percy, lodger, widowed, aged 69 born Sherness, Kent.
Once again anyone with connections with Frank's family, it would be
great to hear from you.
Regards,
Sean
Hello Listers,
A little while back I posted information regarding Edward Chant of
Sherborne, son of Noah Chant: 1811-1870. You might recall that Edward
and his family were found on the 1881 as thus:
Reigate Rd, Reigate Foreign, Surrey working as a domestic servant.
-Edward Chant Head: 38 born Sherborne
-Sarah Chant: wife: 22 born Perry, Hampshire
-Emma Chant; daughter 9 born Buntingford, Hereford
-Alice M Chant: daughter 7 born Pimlico, Middlesex
-Edward Chant: son 1 male born Pimlico, Middlesex
On 1891 census: at 13, Colbeck Mews, Kensington
-Edward Chant 45 born Sherborne, coachman and domestic service
-Sarah Chant 32 born Perrey, Hampshire
-Edward Chant 11, son born Pimlico
-Joseph Chant 9 son born Perrey, Hants
-Ellen Chant 7 daughter born Reigate, Surrey
-Henry Chant 6 son born Reigate, Surrey
-David Chant 5 son born South Kensington
-Edith Chant 2 daughter born South Kensington
Edward's daughter Emily Chant was on the 1891 census at 226 London Raod,
Reigate working as a servant in the household of 35 yr old Percy Jones
who was "living on own means". Emily is listed as being 19 yrs old.
You may recall that there was a problem of locating the family on the
1901 census. Eventually they surfaced with a few slight mistakes in
their details, they had also by then beginning to disperse as a unit.
Edward had departed London and taken as a publican, also by his age
"grown a little younger". The fact that he gives Yeovil as his
birthplace threw me initially. However there is no doubt it is him as
the rest of the family are also there.
1901 census:
Anchor Public House at the village of Duloe, North Bedfordshire:
Edward Chant aged 49 born Yeovil, publican and groom
Sarah Chant aged 42 born Gt Staughton, Hants, assisting in Public House
Henry Chant aged 17 born Reigate, bricklayer
Ellen Chan aged 15 born Reigate, assisting in Public House
David Chant aged 13 born Kensington, London, ordinary farm worker
Joseph Elliot, lodger aged 24 born Duloe
As you can see Edward aged only 4 years between 1891 and 1901
I also found Edward Chant Jnr living with his sister Alice Chant (listed
above on the 1881 census as being 7 yrs old. You will recall she was
not found on the 1891 census)
38 Peacock Street, Newington, London
Henry Hoare aged 30 born Westminster, newsagents assistant
Alice Hoare aged 27 born Pimlico
Alice Hoare, daughter aged 3 born Lambeth
Edward Chant aged 21 born Piccadilly, Cab Driver
As yet I have not found Emily Chant, daughter of Edward, listed on the
1891 census above at Reigate. She may well have married by then.
Anyone with connections with Edward's family at Duloe, Bedfordshire ?
Regards,
Sean
Hello Sean,
I think the Walter in the 1881 census is my gr. grandfather's brother. If
so, Walter's parents were James Chant and Rhoda Moore of Bradford Abbas.
Their children were:
Edward b. 1835, Mary Ann b. 1836-d. 1843, Walter b. 1840, Alfred (my gr.
grandfather) b.1842, George b. 1845, and Lydia b. 1847. I have in my notes
that Alfred, Walter and Edward were stone masons.
Lydia married John Long and came to the US, as did my grandfather, Charles
Chant, son of Alfred.

Hello Listers,
I feel this family should be obvious but don't seem to have it listed. Does
anyone know them please?
There is the usual problem with our forefathers lack of imagination regarding
names!
They are a few doors along from Kerry's family.
Cheers,
John

Dear Listers
I have met via the Rootsweb Kalgoorlie Message board a most generous and
helpful researcher by the name of Jill. She has sent me a lot of
information on my CHANT family this past week. Even found a missing sister
of my Mary Ann CHANT. It is rather large to put on this board so am letting
you know so those who are interested can email me and I will forward it on.
It is mainly descendants of William CHANT and Elizabeth MALE and their
children but there are a few strays that I am yet to find connections for.
Going by what I have been sent by Jill, I could have a lot more next week as
she is going to her Family History Centre on the weekend to look for more
for me. WHAT A GEM **
I will freely give this information and if Michael thinks I can put it on
this board, I will. I can do it in smaller lots if necessary. Also in
return, for Jill if anyone knows of anything of the LINDRUM family (yes the
snooker one) you could email me for Jills email address or I can forward it
on for her.
Happy hunting
Regards
Joan

Hello John,
Thanks for your message. I am interested to hear about what you find
regarding William married to Anna, especially as I have been so
interested myself, of course presuming wrongly or rightly that he was a
son of George and Mary.
Have you noticed the postings on their son Noah Chant: 1811-1870 on the
CHANT List ?
I also have burial dates for William and Anna at Sherborne as
William Chant aged 65 6th August 1838
Anna Chant aged 48 22nd August 1823
Do you have the same dates ?
Regards,
Sean

Hello Gill,
I had a look at Milborne Port. I could'nt find George, Susan or Bessie
on the 1891 census. I also checked elswhere without any luck. Were they
still alive in 1891 ? I did find a 65 yr old George Chant as a boarder
at Odcome and a 69 yr George Chant at Henstridge. He had a 28 yr old
wife !!!!!

Hello Gary,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, my mail service has been
sick of late. Anyhow here goes:
1891 census:
74 Oakley Rd, Islington:
George Chant aged 58, a widower, cabinet manufacturer born London, Hoxton
Emily Chant aged 34, daughter born London, Islington
Harry E Chant aged 28, son , cabinetmaker born London, Clerkenwell
Eliza Chant aged 44, sister born London, St Lukes
No Earnest Chant at that address., however Harry E Chant's age matches
with your Ernest, and of course there is the middle initial of "E". What
do you think.
The George Chant aged 22 and Horace aged 14 on the 1881 census do not
appear to be on the 1891 at that address. IN fact i could not find a
Horace Chant in London, or a 32 yr old George Chant.
Let me know what you think.
As a matter of interest where do you Chant family originate from ?
Regards,
Sean

Listers,
Anybody researching the Oborne CHANT's? I have the following:
1881 Census Doves Common, West Tisbury, Wilts.
Henry CHANT M 38 Oborne Dorset Head Farm Labourer
Fanny CHANT M 34 Fonthill Gifford Wilts Wife
Charles CHANT 9 Fonthill Gifford Wilts Son Scholar
Frederick CHANT 8 Fonthill Gifford Wilts Son Scholar
Sarah Jane CHANT 7m Codford St Mary Wilts Daur
1901 Census St Edmunds Salisbury.
Frederick CHANT 27 Fonthil Gifford Wilts Carter Corn Merchant
Edith CHANT 27 Chilmark Wilts
Gertrude CHANT 4 Salisbury Wilts
Percival CHANT 3 Salisbury Wilts
Arthur CHANT 1 Salisbury Wilts
BDM gives Percival Henry O. or C.? Birth in Salisbury 1898
I have a Birth Certificate for an Adrian Brian CHANT as a son of a Percy CHANT and Beatrix Marjory nee BLAKE in the 1930's at Charlton All Saints (just south of Salisbury on the road to Downton) - I won't give any more details as Adrian could still be alive - There is only 1 Percival/Percy CHANT in the GRO between 1894 and 1918 so this would appear to link up.
Any takers for the above Dorset offshoot into Wiltshire?

Hi Sean
1901 Census index has:
George Chant 42 Dorsetshire, Sherborne, London St George The Martyr Health
Warehouseman
Fanny Chant 47 Somersetshire, Castle Cray, London, St George The Martyr
If you have anything further on him from 1901 would be appreciated.
1891 census at Collington Street, Borough Rd, St
George the Martyr, London
George Chant aged 31, carman at Brewers
Fanny Chant aged 35
Thomas Chant aged 11 son born London
Are Arthur from the 1881 census and Thomas from the 1891 census the same
person ? There ages are identical.
at Sherborne on the 1881 census:
George CHANT Head M Male 21 Sherbone, Dorset,
England Carman
Fanny CHANT Wife M Female 25 Castle Cary, Somerset,
England
Arthur F. CHANT Son Male 1 Newington, Surrey,
England
Dwelling 7 Henshaw St
Census Place Newington, Surrey, England
Have nothing from Sherborne PR for George Chant b 1860.
Maybe he was born nearby, not baptised Church of England
or just civil birth registered. Another possible was that
he was born in the Sherborne District but is recorded at
another Parish nearby?
regards
Michael Cheeseman
