Hello all ...
I have information on marriages only for the children of Sylvestor CHANT
(1820) and Elizabeth (Eliza) BRISTER (1826).
I would appreciate more about the marriages please. I do have birth dates
for the eleven children.
I do have one child, Harriet Chant married to Stephen INDER with twelve
children, but only information on the year of their birth, and some further
information on two of them.
Thanks for any further information.

Hi John
Must put on my Admin hat here.
Please dont list details of living people eg 1970's. This is a general
warning to
all listers that unless you know they or their connected relatives are
deceased you
should not discuss living family online in Public email/chatrooms/websites.
It is
not permitted on public forums like this as it breaches privacy laws of
various
countries. Many now have interconnected treaties regards breaches on
electronic mail etc.
John 2ndly would appreciate details of NZ family you have details of and
from whom
(not through list) as it details living descendants. Take care to assume all
Chant's
in NZ descend from my Sherborne family lines. I'm aware of at least two
Chant branches
in NZ pre 1900 that came out seeking Gold during NZ goldrushes that had been
in Victoria
and Tasmania before moving to New Zealand. I am yet to find out from where
in the UK they originated.
regards
Michael Cheeseman
5x and 4x great grandson of George Chant and Elizabeth Noakes.

Noakes

Hello Beryl,
As children for these two I have only these three:
1.) Joseph 5.2.1847 West Chinnock-1884 Sydney married Grace GRAY (of Joseph
Gray and Ann Hallett) c1851 Chiselborough on 2.3.1867. Is Sandy Murray still on
the list as I have this as her line?
2.) Benjamin 31.3.1859 married Amelia Gray c1858 West Chinnock (Grace's
sister). I think they may have emigrated to Canada. At any rate I have that their
son, Joseph 1880 West Chinnock married a Rose PRIDDLE and they had a son Perly
Samuel Joseph Chant born in Chantry, Leeds County, Ontario.
3.) Charles 1850 West Chinnock.
I don't have Ellen, William, John or Mary Ann for them. May I have details
please?
I haven't got Betsey as a second wife for Adam. Indeed, Adam and Jane are
shown together in the 1881 census, although they are both missing by the time the
1901 census comes around.
I have posted this to the list as well as sending it to you as some of the
information fits in with my recent E-mail about Elizabeth Chant's connections in
reply to Michael.
If anyone has information about Rose Priddle I should be pleased to know as
there are Priddles from Tintinhull in another part of my tree extending to
Australia.
Cheers,
John

Hi Michael,
For Elizabeth all born West Chinnock:
Charlotte 1848
Lavinia 1850
Lucinda 1853
Ann 1857
George 1860
Jane 1863
James 1865
Louisa 1868
William 1872 married 31 10 1900 Eliza Langdon (daughter of George and Rose)
Ann 1810 West Chinnock, in the above 1851 census extract, I have as a
daughter of Job Chant 1777 and Susannah Fowler in my line.
Her brother John c1800-c1881 West Chinnock I have married to a Susan (no
surname). Their children were Harriet married to William Gray above and Susan
c1833 West Chinnock who married Josiah Chant in the other West Chinnock line.
(This was on the list last month.)
William Gray was the son of Silas and Ann nee Chant who married at West
Chinnock 7.6.1817. I do not have this Ann's parentage.
Another child of Silas Gray and Ann I have as Joseph 29-12-1821 who married
in 1845, Ann (otherwise Charlotte) Hallett.
For this Joseph and Ann I have two daughters, Amelia c1858 Middle Chinnock
and Grace c1851 Chiselborough. Amelia Gray married Benjamin Chant 31.3.1859
West Chinnock (son of Adam and Jane nee Hallett) and Grace Gray married
Benjamin's brother Joseph.
Adam I have from your John Chant 1796 and Elizabeth Mudford family.
Have posted this reply to the list as it may help others (or confuse them
utterly with the intermarriages of common family names).
Cheers,
John

Here is another one with an interesting name. Any takers please? I think he
may be unique and if so his great grand daughter has been in touch with me
about tracing her line. If someone has the family I'll suggest she joins the

Hello John and Helen of course other listers,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you regarding Wilfred Henry
Chant. I have been away from the computer for a spell.
John like you I have been trawling the various 1881, 1891 and 1901
online census's. I totally agree with what you found as a regards the
family. Actually I have come up with a number of other connected
branches, and hopefully solved a few riddles along the way. It is
amazing what one small item can lead to.
My belief is that Wilfred Henry Chant is descended from Noah Chant:
1811-1870 of Sherborne. Noah is many listers are aware was the son of
William Chant and Hannah Phillips. This will be of particular interest
to Michael Cheeseman, and of course New Zealand descendents of William
and Hannah.
1. William Chant married Hannah Phillips 23rd July 1798 at Sherborne.
William baptised 1771 at Sherborne, the son of George Chant and Mary
Rogers.
2. Noah Chant was the fourth known child of William and Hannah. He was
baptised at Sherborne on the 1st June 1811. Noah was married to Eliza
Slade at Sherborne on the 11th September 1835.
3. Wilfred Chant baptised 23rd Feb 1838 at Sherborne, son of Noah and
Eliza Chant. Noah was listed as a "servant'" on Wilfred's baptismal
record. It is my belief that Wilfred was the father of Wilfred Henry
Chant aged 50 who migrated to USA during 1911. There is circumstantial
evidence to support this.
4. Although I do not have a date or index at present, the above Wilfred
probably married Sarah Colston c. 1860/61. I have a burial record for
Wilfred Chant aged 31 at Sherborne on the 21st October 1869. This fits
neatly with his baptismal record.
5. As John has already pointed out on the 1881 census at Hound Street,
Sherborne there is:
-Sarah Chant , widowed aged 40 working as a dressmaker born at
Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
-Frank Chant, son aged 16 born at Sherborne working as a newsboy
for Smith and Son
-Annie Chant, daughter aged 13 born at Sherborne: halfday in
domestic service
-Emma Chant, daughter aged 11 born at Sherborne: scholar
I was intrigued as to the whereabouts of other child Wilfred Henry
Chant. I am certain this is him at Long Bridge, Shepton Mallet:
-Peter Colston, aged 65 born at Shepton Mallet: plasterer
-Fanny Colston, wife aged 63 born at Shepton Mallet
-Mary A Cooper, daughter aged 29 born at Shepton Mallet: servant
-Eliza J Colston, daughter aged 26 born at Sherborne: dressmaker
-Wilfred H Chant, grandson aged 19 born at Maestag Wales: plumber
-Willice Colston, grandson aged 4 born Maestag, Wales
Of course the spanner in the works here is Wilfred's supposed birthplace
of Maestag. I was quite surprised when i saw that. Perhaps it is a
clerical error considering that the other grandson Willice Colston was
also born there. Perhaps Wilfred Snr and wife Sarah spent time there
when first married. Considering that all later censuses and documents
state that Wilfred Jnr was born at Sherborne I am inclined to think that
he was not born in Wales.
It seems no doubt that Sarah was the daughter of Peter and Fanny Colston
of Shepton Mallet. As Sarah's sister Eliza Colston aged 26 was born at
Sherborne that the family may have lived there for a spell, where I
assume Sarah and Wilfred met. Eliza would have born c. 1855.
6. Based on the fact that Sarah did not have any more children after
Emma aged 11 in 1881, and of course was a widow strongly suggests that
she was married to Wilfred Chant: 1838-1869. The fact that they used the
name Wilfred for their eldest child is further evidence.
7. As mentioned in a previous posting Wilfred Henry Chant was married to
Sarah Ann Stephens during 1886 at Christchurch, however it seems
apparent from their children's births that they lived in Sherborne. They
are on the 1891 census at 157 Newland Street, Sherborne:
-Wilfred aged 29 working as a manager of waterworks
-Sarah Ann aged 29
-Reginald aged 1 born at Sherborne
-Wilfred Harold aged 4 months born at Sherborne
8. The 1901 census is clear cut.
At Tremdle St, Sherborne:
-Wilfred Chant aged 39 born at Sherborne: painter
-Donald F Chant aged 11 born Sherborne
-Sarah Chant, mother aged 60 born Shepton Mallet
At the Three Castles Inn, 35 Catherine Hill, Frome, Somerset
-Charles Sherring aged 41, born Sherborne, publican
-Caroline Sherring, wife aged 43 born Sherborne
-Emliy Sherring, daughter aged 20 born Dublin. Ireland
-Charles Sherring, son aged 19 born Milborne Port, Somerset
-Edward Sherrin, son aged 18 born Milborne Port
-Agnes Sherring, daughter aged 13 born London Tooting
-Frederick Sherring, son aged 5 born Balcombe, Somerset
-Leonard Sherrring, son, aged 2 born Standerick, Somerset
-Adelaide Sheppard, mother in law aged 70 born Frome, Somerset
-Sarah A Chant, visitor aged 39 born Sherborne
-Wilfred Chant, visitor aged 1o born Sherborne
So it seems Sarah and son Wilfred were travelling at the time of the
census, hence their non-appearance at Sherborne. Were the Sherring
family family or friends ? Either are possible considering they born at
Sherborne.
It appears as Wilfred and Sarah only had two surviving children, Donald
and Wilfred. I agree with John Chant who earlier thought that Donald and
Reginald from the 1891 census may be one in the same, considering their
ages are indentical.
9. It is be assumed that Wilfred Henry's wife Sarah Ann died at some
stage after 1901. From the emigration records in 1911 he travelled with
his wife Gertrude may Chant aged 29. Clearly he was remarried. As we
know his son Wilfred Harold Chant had earlier emigrated to US during
1910, giving his parents address as Tremdle St Sherborne, where the
family had been listed on the 1901 census. Interestingly Wilfred Snr
gave no next of kin, rather a friend S Chant of Sherborne. Could this be
a mistake, meaning Sarah Chant his mother, who would have been aged
about 70 by then ?
10. From Social Security records in the USA it seems as if Wilfred Snr
lived to the great age of 100. They obviously settled and lived in the
New York/New Jersey area. It is be assumed that Wilfred Jnr remained in
the US, probably marrying and having children. It is likely that there
are Sherborne Chant desc. in the New York./New Jersey district. I'd love
to track them down.
11. At this stage not sure what became of Donald/Reginald Chant. By 1911
he would have been aged about 21, presumably had married and settled
himself staying at Sherborne ?
I hope th above gels together and is of interest to others. I'd love
discussion on the matter. I have a few pieces of info on descs of Noah
Chant and Eliza Slade which I will give in later posting.

Sean Leyland

He is one of mine - Joseph was baptised 2 April 1820 to Charles and Sarah -
strangely enough his sister, Eliza (1829) called one of her sons Richmond
also.

Hello Christine,
I do like it when this happens!
Cheers,

Hi Sean

'On the 1901 census things a slightly more confusing. Wilfred Snr listed as a
39 yr. painter living at Sherborne. There is no sign of Reginald. I assume he

If that is the same Wilfred the family is listed as:

35607809 1490786 Chant Donald 11 Dorset Sherborne Dorset Sherborne

35607810 1490786 Chant Sarah 60 Somerset Shepton Mallet Dorset

always assuming that this is not two Chant families living next door to each
other. Is Reginald now Donald?
This looks like the same Sarah from Shepton Mallet in the 1881 census at
Hound Street, Sherborne:
Sarah CHANT Head W Female 40 Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England
Dressmaker
Frank CHANT Son U Male 16 Sherborne, Dorset, England Newsboy To

Annie CHANT Daur Female 13 Sherborne, Dorset, England Halfday
In Domestic Service
Emma CHANT Daur Female 11 Sherborne, Dorset, England Scholar
Back to the 1901 census and could this be the same Frank as he is the only
Sherborne lad of the right age?

>From Free BMD Frank Chant married Florence Agnes HATTON in Brentford

Florence Hatton is the only Florence shown on the 1881 census of the right
age and born in Torquay.
There! Have I created a 'mare? There would need to be a bit more research but
I hope this may have helped to extend your family and perhaps allow someone
else to chip in if they recognise any of the people.
Cheers,
John
Hello again,
I could try and produce a little more! On the next page of the census are:
