Hello Listers,
The family of Elizabeth, a single woman, I posted from the 1861 West Chinnock

he in the 1901 census please?

Hi Sherron,
My friend doesn't know anything about Margaret I'm afraid.
She said:
I don't know any of Uncle Harry's kids/family. Am wondering if somehow this
lady might fit into his branch of the family tree? I know they are/were all
back in the Pennsylvania area. She could have maybe been married to a son or
something? Just a guess - I don't think she's part of our branch
Pours cold water on that then!
Cheers,
John
Hallo John

Thanks Christine,
Does anyone know which line this Louis may be in please?
Having said that he could well be mine as I have:
1861 census
Lewis CHANT age 14 Stoke-sub-Hamdon
He does not appear on Free BMD and the birth registrations for 1845 are about
95% complete, 1846 82% and 1847 almost 100%.
This Lewis was the son of Sampson Chant and Hannah Clothier. He married Mary
Thorne in St Mary's Stoke-sub-Hamdon 14-7-1866 and I have children for them
until Joseph 1875. This would seem to rule him out as the chap on the 1880 U.S.
census who prompted my original query.
I'll keep looking!
Cheers,
John
Thanks Sean,
Nothing specific at present but it is nice to know that there is some more
information available.
Has the death and marriage information also been carried on to a later date
in the same way please?
Cheers,
John
Hello Michael,
I should have said the census entry was from 1920.
Anyhow I found some further details on Wilfred and wife Elsie. They
obviously, like so many others, retired to Florida in later years.
Name: Elsie Drayton Chant
Death Place: Sarasota, Florida
Death Date: 22 Jan 1982
Birth Date: 29 Dec 1892
Wilfred also died at Sarasota, Florida.
Regards,
Sean

Hello Michael,
I managed to track down Wilfred H Chant of Sherborne who migrated to USA
1910:
Living at Montclair Township, Essex County, New Jersey:
Wilfred H Chant, Head, aged 29 born England, working as an agent (rest
very difficult to read)
Elsie Chant, wife aged 29, born England
Wilfred Chant, son aged 5 born New Jersey.
Interestingly the census return states that Wilfred migrated during/
1909 as opposed to 1910 and his wife settled in the USA during 1908
We know of course that Wilfred lived to be almost 101 yrs old. The
Social Security Index state:
WILFRED H CHANT born: 12 Nov 1890 died: 20 Apr 1991: New York
The index shows nothing for either wife Elsie or son Wilfred. Of course
he may well still be living.
No sign of Wilfred Chant Snr yet or his second wife Gertrude.
I can't find anyone on the 1930 census as yet.
Regards,
Sean

How do we get birth information after 1905 on this web site please? Or have
you got CD-ROMs that cover a later period?

Hi Listers,
The only Henry/Harry CHANTs around on the 1880 census were these and they
none of them seem too hopeful, not even the one in clink, who was the youngest,
as he wasn't born in England.

John

Hi Ruth,
Thanks for helping.
Now you have a little more time for genealogy I hope your New Year Resolution
holds good. Do you have any research facilities through the University?
Who is the CHANT you need the most help with? (I don't mean the children!)
Cheers,
John

The maps are about the same size as those for Australia provided on Telstra's

so Free BMD is not in its usual 'standby' position!

OK John
I have refocused of late from Ancient texts except
tracking down Chant references in the 11th and 12th

Subject: Re: [CHANT] U.S.A. : Henry (Harry) CHANT
Hi Sean,
Thank you. Now that my friend knows I am not just stringing her along she
has
become more forthcoming and given other information from the box in her
attic
which may help trace her elusive great grandfather.
Michael asked about the upbringing of the boys after their mother died (of
consumption). I had looked in the 1880 U.S. census on line which is the only
one
to which I believe there is free access. I had not found anything. Not
really
surprising as I was in the dark about the ages of any of the people for whom
I was looking!
Henry possibly had the second initial R or M.
Ann(?) the deserted wife may have had the surname SNYDER as it was with a
family of that name, farmers, with whom the boys were placed for their
upbringing. Bearing in mind the phonetics I think this could have been
SCHNEIDER as
well. A search of the 1880 shows nothing except a lot of families of those
two
names and variants, most of whom seem to have an Ann!
The boys details have been expanded. Although Harry junior was known as
either Harry or Henry he was:
Francis Henry (Harry) born 24-1-1892 Pittsburgh
his brother
William born 21-7-1894 Pittsburgh
their sister
Ethel Irene born 5-7-1895 Philadelphia
Ethel may be on the 1900 census as she was between three and six years old
when the accident occurred
This extra information may give more positive indications particularly as
the
errant father is said to have become a general store proprietor and a
surveyor for the railroad (family tradition) and to have been buried in Fort
Smith,
Arkansas. The family never found a grave to authenticate this. Nor a CHANT
grave in any likely location for Ann(?) although this was thought to be at a
place
in Philadelphia, then known as Manayunk.
Thanks for your help so far. Let's see how much further we can go!
Cheers,
John

Elizabeth Follett born 20.3.1866 daughter of Simeon Male Follett & Emma
Napper.
** Thanks for the info.re Mary Board ( nee Chant) at the 1851 census
with Vile Board Walton an innkeeper etc.& wife & others. That is my Mary,
sister of my ancestor George. This calls for some more detective work. Mary
must be related somehow with the inn keeper having Vile Board as his names.
I got onto the IGI the other day & found there are oodles of Board names in
Somerset. I must look further into that Vile Board Walton & other Vile
names that you found for me.

Sorry, I could be wrong but I don't think you can access this online. I
applied for the info (manually) from the SS Administration some time ago and got a
photocopy. Then discovered I didn't know the person in question. But it has
the application date on it as well as dob and parents name, place of work and
SS# issued. The person has to be dead. I will research some more.
Sherron
The Margaret Chant in question was obviously her married name but, strangely,
the US Social Security form to apply for a number doesn't ask for a husband's
name--only parents. She requested the number when she was 41 (and, I
believe the system was just starting.) It also lists her place of work in Phila. at
the time.
Hi Sherron,
Thanks. I'll look at that map. You also seem to be clairvoyant and have
answered my question, just sent, about Social Security numbers. This means then
that William must have been in California for a time. How do you know the date
the number was issued please? The other information could also answer a question
or two about parents; particularly if it is a chap. Is this something you can
access on line, please?
Cheers,
John
