Hi All,
Here is my line. I am descended from William H. Chant, son of Jane
Chant. He is my great-grandfather. He was sent to an orphanage at the age of
5, Jane had an affair with her sister's husband and that's a no-no in 1896.
As far as Chris goes, it seems as though you should fit in somewhere
but I don't seem to have your people?!?! I got my breakthrough from Andy
Chant and I know that the first three generations aren't SOLID fact. I will
get back on the research wagon as much as I can. Two jobs, a daughter just
starting kindergarten, our second child due in April and an unemployed wife
makes it hard to get going as of lately. Here's my line:

Most of the Chants in my husband's line are descendants of Robert b
1700. However, my husband has also a John Chant who married Rhoda
Langdon 1842 in Chiselborough. Can someone help me out with the parents
of this John plus the children of the couple? Any help would be much
appreciated.

Hi Michael,
I did follow your tip and check up on Robert Switzer's listing. It did
provide some new information, and I have been able to corroborate some of
the data with the SSDI listing.
Thanks for your assistance.

Hello Everyone, It's Janette here.
I've got a binder for "Un-attached Chant" family
sheets & I'v'e come across a copy of a death certificate for a Robert Chant.
I got this certif.when I was getting into my Chant background back in 1986,
but it's of no use to me, as I haven't got any Dorset ones in my backgound.
Here's what it says...The death was 30th November 1856 at 3.55a.m.on board
the ship 'Simla' which salied from the Port of Southampton in England on the
12th November 1856 & arrived Melbourne on the 6th January 1857. It even has
the position of the boat when Robert died ,,Latitude 0 degrees 24 South &
Longitude 22 degrees 31 West. He is recorded as aged 46 & a Boatswain & died
of Bronchitis..was sick for 6 days. There's just a dash for parents names,if
known. The Commander of the ship 'Simla' signed the certificate as witness &
also in the next column & as captain of the vessel & same lat.&
long.postions given there as before.
It says Robert was buried on 7th Dec./06 whatever that means? & a clerk
from the "Simla" witnesed the burial.
The certificate states that he was married but no details are given.
So someone's son & husband died on the way to Australia, but whom?.
Regards,
Janette.
Hello Rick
Firstly the more details provided the more likely someone will
have info that can match. Lastly most of my data concentrates
on early 1800's back. In 1875 it had been made compulsory to
register a birth. Have you checked St Catherine's Indexes
(commonly used term for General Register's Office - GRO indexes
in fiche form original records once housed at St Catherine's
House but now moved)
A likely match is the following UK Birth index entry.
Births Dec Quarter 1877
CHANT George Hedley Steyning 2b 296a
Steyning
Created 1st July 1837.
Sub-districts : Hove; New Shoreham; Preston; Shoreham; Steyning
GRO volumes : VII (1837-51); 2b (1852-1930).
Aldrington, Ashurst, Botolphs, Bramber, Coombes, Edburton, Fulking,
Hangleton, Henfield, Hove, Kingston by Sea, Lancing (from 1870),
New Shoreham, Old Shoreham, Patcham, Portslade, Poynings, Preston,
Shermanbury, Sompting, Southwick, Steyning, Upper Beeding,
West Blatchington, Woodmancote.
This appears to be in Sussex, so you join the list of researchers
with Sussex Chant branches.
What info or census records have you checked in Canada?
Do you have George's death certificate any clues to place/county
of birth.
If so what does it state? What if anything of local records in Canada
have you checked?
George married Ethel SWITZER ? where and when. What ship did George arrive
on?
Where did he settle and what children, grandchildren did he have,
where and when.
Would appreciate these details if you have them.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hello Rick,
Have you looked at:

Keep up the Rollcall
Rita Nye is still Looking for Chants from the Oborne area.
Benjamin Chant married Martha Chaplain 1760 at Oborne
Samuel Chant son of Benjamin and Martha Chant born 25th August 1777 and
baptised
27th August 1777 at Oborne.
Rita has not found Benjamins baptism or Martha Chaplain so far so has been
unable to get back any further.
Nothing through the Dorset Parish transcriptions Website I am webmaster of
has a Benjamin Chant though full transcriptions of over 300 parishes will
take a long time for all entries to be sent in.
Nothing I have indicates a match for a Benjamin Chant. North Wootton, Folke,
Holwell,
Haydon, Sherborne, Bradford Abbas, Marnhull, Puncknowle, Piddletown data for
Dorset
nor Milborne Port, Odcombe, Stoke Sub Hamden, Middle Chinnock, Henstridge,
West Chinnock,
Chiselborough, Martock in Somerset etc ring any bells with a match
Being pre 1793 Hampshire's out. Anyone got a possible candidate? Wiltshire
is a maybe
Andy's Chant's Stowell Chant's may provide a candidate. Though it maybe just
be his
baptism is in some small villiage not yet searched, parents having moved
from somewhere
Chant was more common.
Sherron Biddle's Chant lines moving all over Somerset and Dorset back to
Somerset then
the US shows that not all families stayed put. Many families that emigrated
moved
around their new countries so it should not be surprising their relatives
moved around
the old country. Many forget that people went to certain towns for market
day then returned
to their own smaller village or Hamlet after buying or selling goods
regularly.
A healthy person of the time could travel 40 miles in a day on foot (I know
this from some
Histories for Cornwall, Wiltshire and Dorset). Many places in Wiltshire,
Dorset and
Somerset can be as close as 1-2 miles between. Travel a few days and someone
could cover a
good distance. While the Parish Poor laws did somewhat restrict travel, they
mainly affected transient men without work or single women. Families often
moved to join other family members
who had moved, nearing birth wives often went back home to their mothers and
their home
Parish. Men may have obtained Work from a maternal uncle or distant cousin
(People knew more
of their relatives close and distant than we do today) or someone they met
on market day.
I have been informed the Oborne vicar(s) were more lenient with marriages.
Marriages were
performed by Banns or Licence. After payment of the fee for a Licence the
ceremony could be performed the next available Sunday. By Banns ment the
assembled Parish congregation (everyone
in the Parish District had to attend or pay a fine) was asked on three
consecutive Sundays if their were any reason why the couple should not be
married. If not the marriage could go ahead.
Normally under Banns you needed one person to be from that parish. My
understanding is that at Oborne it was easier to get married without the
strict appliance of these conditions.
So if a church vicar or parents were preventing a marriage in their home
Parish maybe Benjamin Chant and Martha Chaplain both moved to Oborne just so
they could get married and stayed.
The problem then is where had he and Martha come from to marry in Oborne.
Was Benjamin from
a Dorset Chant family or what I feel is more likely a Somerset Chant family.
Benjamin was probably born/Baptised circa 1738-43 and Martha similarly.
Possibly one or
both under the then age of consent of 21 years. So required parental
permission.
If anyone has a Benjamin Chant that may fit I'm sure Rita would be very
happy to hear about
the details. Benjamin Chant has been an outstanding brickwall line for a
while now and it
would be great to assist Rita progress back a bit more.

Thank you Joan
It was great to havce yet another suxccesful outcome after all this time to
finally break down your elusive Elizabeth Chant's Husband and details to
that
of Elizabeth Male and William Chant who were known but not what became of
them
and their family. So now you join the ranks of other member descendants of
Robert Chant b1700 of West Chinnock.
The Queries I made to some South Australian contact's really made it pan
out.
Not only that widow Elizabeth Chant was wife of William Chant came out on
the
Octavia in 1855 and noted another couple on the Octavia named Chant but that
the
reason she came out to South Australia, which I suspected was because of
other
relatives already there in Australia was correct with elder son Jabez Chant
and
his wife coming out in 1853.
So not only Jabez Chant's family to follow up on but her son Alexander Chant
being the one in Young NSW thanks to Sean's comments. Also that William
Chant b 1795
son of Robert Chant and Sarah Kellaway had another son Christopher Chant b
1789
married Jane Male who settled in Ontario Canada and had 14 children.
The Ontario Canada Chant's come up a bit so you no doubt will now have keen
interest
there being related from both the Chant and Males lines.
I expect may queries will come to the list now from you as the family lines
are
extensive and some branches are not yet known.

Michael Cheeseman

Greetings listers
Well I haven't really asked for a roll call from all members for a while. As
many of
our members are rather quiet and their research interests may have been
forgotten by our regulars. I think it's a appropriate time for a roll call.
Also I need to refamiliarize myself on whose researching what families.
through my regular searching and querying I get a number of queries from
people interested in the Chant family
name and it would be good to be able to put people in touch if the enquirer
doesn't want to
join the list. Which happens from time to time.
This will also help fellow members know who is still on the list and which
Chant lines
you are researching. Updates on branch lines progress may also help
establish a link
not previously obvious before.
I'd appreciate an outline of peoples research or updated GEDCOM directly if
you prefer
of your Chant info.
For Stoke Sub-Hamdon Lines descendants from Robert Chant b 1719, Thomas
Chant b 1710
and the children of Robert b 1700 West Chinnock will be fine.
If you wish to send more than your direct line that would be much
appreciated as
this helps making a branch match with new potential Chant members easier.
We have a number of researchers still stuck on their Chant lines and maybe
we can
progress these as has been done on a number of lines on this list from a
joint
effort over the last 18 months.
Happy Hunting all

I have been sent this info.
It may apply to Joan's line of Alexander Chant.
>From the Coolamon-Ganmain Farmers Review 10 Sep 1937
A pioneer of the Condobolin district, in the person of Mr Alfred Chant,
passed away at Condobolin recently. Mr Chant took up land at Melrose in the
early nineties, and by his industry, courage and resource, surmounted the
many difficulties and hardships which effect the man in a district just
opened up.
He faced droughts, fires and the drawbacks of the outback, stood undaunted
before them, eventually reaping his reward in a valuable property. It can
be said of such faithful landowners that Australia owes her success and
prestibe. Later in life Mr Chant sold out and purchased a property on the
Lachlan, five miles from Condobolin, which he worked until stricken with
illness. Undaunted, he acquired a smaller property and managed that until
within a week of his passing.
Mr Chant was a great lover of horses, so much so that he refused to sell
those past their prime, turning them out to a well-earned rest. He bred
draughts and ponies, which were a sideline from his chief source of income
__ wheat and sheep.
A man of keen mental talents, Mr Chant never took a two-sided view of any
proposition, but stated his views with decision, and his honesty of word and
action won him high regard among all who knew him and his demise leaves a
vacancy in the ranks of the brave pioneers of the Lachlan district. His
ideals were high and his life was marked by many generous and charitable
deeds, passing to his rest respected by all.
He is survived by four brothers, William (Sydney), Henry (Beecroft), Sydney
(Rannock), Arthur (Wagga), and five sisters, Mrs Alice J Miller (Brisbane),
Mrs George Webster (Hurstville), Mrs James Broadribb (Albury), Mrs JH Wilson
(Castle Hill) and Miss M M Chant (Beecroft). His eldest brother Richard,
died in 1931. His earthly remains were laid to rest in the Methodist portion
of the Codobolin cemetery in the presence of his brothers and sisters and
friends.
Maybe if someone can tell which NSW Chant family Alfred was from they
could let me know.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hello Listers,
This is for Janette as she asked me to look up the reference when I said I
had seen it in my local library and John Barrett Chant is in her line. I have
posted it here as others may be interested:
>From 'The Victoria History of the County of Somerset' volume 3.
Listed in the section about education in Ilchester:
'There is evidence for several private schools during the 19th century,
beginning with the day-schools of William Baker in the Town Hall and of Baker
and his wife in Church Street in 1830. By 1840 there was a day- and boarding
school in Church Street run by J.B.Chant. The teachers at the National School
were taking boarders by 1859 and by the same date there were schools in the
Market Place taught by Philip Handover and by the postmistress Mary Morey.'
Yes, Janette, it is a bit sparse! But it is a reference and I hope it helps.
If I can put in a plug for the Victoria History series, do look out for it in
the library if you don't buy volumes yourself. The books provide fascinating
insights of days of yore.
Regards,
John
Hello Listers,
I seem to remember the name FUDGE cropping up some time ago with Caroline
married to a Thomas Chant in Marnhull: I think Nita posted the item.
On the Dorset list today Mike Fudge has a route to his tree and this appears
to show another Caroline/Thomas marriage. If the same one all of the details
are different, but if different, where might this Thomas fit in?

I believe Robert (b. 31 Jan 1808, Odcombe) was the son of Thomas Chant and
Susannah Pippard (m. 23 May 1801, OTP, Banns, Odcombe) according to the
Odcombe PR as listed in LDS Film 1526381. Siblings: Susannah (b. 12 April
1802 ) and Elizabeth (b. 2 Oct. 1810).
Thomas could be the son of Robert and Elizabeth Chant, Odcombe. Thomas
(born 28 June 1778. Siblings: Elizabeth (bapt 25 Dec. 1761), Christien
(bapt 10 July 1774 m. Charles Montacute 27 Nov. 1807 after birth of b.b. son
George Brake Chant 7 June 1798), Alice (b. 1776).
However, Tho. (b. 24 June bapt. 28 June 1778) was born to Jn. and Margaret
Fuller (or Mary) Chant (m. 6 May 1758). So possibility for error exists in
that generation.

Subject: Re: [CHANT] Dubbo 1886
Dear Listers,
I found out that Goonoo is the early name for the village of Mogriguy,
some 5 miles NE of Dubbo. It was a major sleeper-cutter camp during the
1880's and 90's. As we know that both William and Luke were involved in
that business this would seem correct. Mogriguy is also very close to
where both William and Luke purchased land from about 1890 onwards. The
Chant property of Shaft Creek and Brewer Range, in the family until the
mid 1950's is close to this village. Mystery solved then.

Sean
