Hi, my name is Judy CHANT & I was kindly introduced to this site by Janette Pfeiffer.
I live in Victoria, Australia, my occupation is a gourmet food retailer.
I'm interested in discovering my CHANT roots & am most grateful for the information Janette P. has already given me.
It seems I am the descendant of William CHANT & Elizabeth nee MALE.
I'm wondering how many CHANT individuals migrated to Australia & where the name CHANT originated from?
I heard once that it came from the name De Chaunte?
Pleased to be part of this interesting subject
Judy
Welcome to the list Judy.
I would like to hear how you are descended from William Chant and Elizabeth
Male
From which child - Jabez, Thomas, Mary Ann or Alexander Chant. Descendancy
from
them is?
We have only recently discovered that Joan Gray's ancestor Elizabeth Chant
who arrived
on the "Octavia" in South Australia in 1855 was actually Elizabeth Male wife
of William
Chant. Joan's line is via Mary Ann Chant.
A number of Chant families came to Australia arriving in all states but not
all are
related to your Chant family either here in Australia or back in Somerset.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Hello everyone, Janette here.
Re John's query for children of Sampson Chant & wife Susan in the 1901
census. I've found William born 1858 was a police Pensioner at Stoke sub
hamden,
James born 1865 was a farm labourer at Stoke sub hemden,
Sara/Sarah born 1869 was a forewoman in a glove factory at stoke sub hamden.
Lewis born 1871 was a police constable at Plumstead,. London
Walter born 1874 was a glove cutter in stoke sub hamden.
I haven't looked further into the others mentioned yet.
Regards, Janette.
Hello Listers,
This is really for Linda Collie but may be of use to others.
Linda, did you ever find out if Emma was the witness to her brother Albert
Thomas's marriage please?
For the benefit of others the line goes from Job Chant married Martha
Gaylard, through their son William Charles 1836 Stoke-sub-Hamdon married Jane
Goldsworthy
begat
William Charles 1867 Bedminster
Emma Jane 1870 Bristol
Albert Thomas 1877 Taunton
Emma Jane Corrick was witness to Albert's marriage and this family appears in
the 1901 census for Taunton, all born Taunton except Emma, Bristol:
20508242 CORRICK Wm. 30 Laundryman
20508243 Emma 30
20508244 Florence 6
20508245 Lily 5
20508246 Ethel 3
20508247 Beatrice 1
So it looks as if you scored a bullseye!
Cheers,
John
Hello Beryl and other Listers,
I think Philip Henry Chant 1846, son of David Chant and Sarah nee Taylor
married Sarah Ann Hockey (widow) nee Locock born abt 1846 buried 29.6.1870 St
Marys, Stoke-sub-Hamdon
begat
Emily Sarah Chant 16.6.1870
John Henry Chant 16.6 1870 buried 16.8.1870
So it looks as if a birth of twins resulted in her death.
Philip then looks to have married
Mary Ellen Palmer born Yeovil 1844 in abt 1873
begat
Alice Grace Chant 1873-1875 Stoke-sub-Hamdon
Francis Henry Chant 1874 Stoke-sub-Hamdon
Alfred Thomas Chant 1876-abt 1878 Stoke-sub-Hamdon
Charles Locock 1838-buried 29.7.1907 Stoke-sub-Hamdon
and Jane nee Cary(Carey) 1839 Martock
married 1.11.1858 Martock
begat Sarah Ann above
Rose Locock 1866 Stoke-sub-Hamdon
Lily Locock 1879 Stoke-sub-Hamdon.
This is from a combination of Duncan Weir's web site and the 1881 census on
line.
Hope this helps someone,
John

My grandmother was a Mary but was called Polly.
Greetings listers
Sorry this didn't come sooner and my lack of response to messages
of late but as Kalgoorlie researcher Joan Gray, (descended from
Elizabeth Chant nee Male arrived South Australia 1855) would be
aware I have been intermittantly offline with problems to my hard
drive the last few weeks and trying franticly to recover the last
months emails, photo's, gedcoms and updated family records in word
documents etc.
No it wasn't a virus attack. Many would be aware I have Generations
Easytree, PAF 5 and Legacy family history packages. None of which
provide me very good charting facilities so I bought Ultimate Family
Tree which make some easy to follow charts. It appears to have caused
a conflict in the operating system because of other software sharing
issues. So I was locked out of explorer and my computer, tools etc.
Well I hope you all had a great Christmas. I know I did.
Where to put all the kids presents now though? That's what you get
for knowing who all your family relatives both distant and close
are. Being well known in family history circles around the world by
so many family researchers has it's advantages. Anyone what a couple
of sacks of Christmas cards? Only kidding. They are all really
appreciated.
Anyway I hope you all keep safe over the silly season and have a
great New Year in 2003. Wow my fourth year as List Admin already!
As a number of you would be aware we have had some great successes in 2001
and 2002. The Linking of Hampshire Chant lines to Andy Chant's Wiltshire
group. Not sure if Allan Cresswell fellow Perth DPS member also with
Wiltshire Lines links to Andy's as yet. Maybe Allan can fill us in on his
progress. Sherron Biddle, Richard Rogers, Ken Bosworth Chant lines from
Minnesota USA 1870's that came from Yeovil in 1873, earlier at Sherborne,
earlier still at Holwell and Haydon in Dorset, coming even earlier from
Puddletown, Puncknowle and back finally to Odcombe, Somerset origins in
the 1700's or are there yet more earlier rovings to uncover Sherron <:-)>
A good lesson that our ancestors were more mobile than many researchers
would think of.
For each new geraration and branch we find many more new questions arise.
But the Mysteries to solve are part of all the fun of the search.
Thank you to Janette Pfiefer for your regular input and John Chant who so
often
sends me non Chant related snippets on other family lines such as Cheeseman
besides his own West Chinnock Lines and general Chant research interests.
To my cousin Linda Chant's husband Sean Leyland on expanding knowledge about
my
NSW cousins and adding Alexander Chant of Young NSW to Joan Gray's research.
To all members who send in bits of info to help others thank you for helping
make
this list so friendly.
Back when I took on this list it had only six members and was stagnant.
Of the many lists I administer and the 50+ US, Canadian, New Zealand, Irish,
English and Scottish lists I have been on this is one of the best to be a
member
of with 70 helpful current members and 25-50 former members many of whom
remain
in contact with various regulars.
Lastly great to see Nancy Quinn, Beryl Grant's cousin back with us after a
four to
five months absence. Also Marilyn Chant who joined us back in August with
the Canadian sypmatico.ca ISP address has been bounced off by the Rootsweb
server after mail was
returned four times. This is uncommon for the Chant list for someone to
leave because
of bounces except where a ISP has gone bust. Hopefully Marilyn can rejoin us
soon.
Hopefully now holidays are on we shall hear back from young London
Schoolgirl and
listmember Carly Chant and break down her brickwall London Chant line back a
couple of
generations. Feel free to continue posting your queries, or updated progress
on your
lines. New info might just be the snippet needed to establish a link between
branches
of Chant families. I hope to progress my own line back further than 1765 in
Sherborne,
Dorset in 2003. It may well be I should look seriously at possible Somerset
Origins
with the Somerset border so very close to Sherborne. I will continue to look
through
my notes and compare with messages recieved and where time allows make
queries with
helpful fellow researchers not on the list to progress your family lines
where I can
and as time allows.
Happy Hunting all.

Hello Listers,
Here is another question provoked by the 1901 census.
Adolphus William Chant 1885 Stoke-sub-Hamdon, I have as marrying an unknown
Calway girl, from Janette. He was the son of Tom Chant and Elizabeth nee
Terrell. Tom died 1897 so does all this family belong to him or are the two
younger children from another source? (Beryl was his and Elizabeth's.) From
the Stoke census:
3844576 Chant Elizabeth 49 Somerset Stoke Living on own means
3844577 Chant Beryl 19 Somerset Stoke Glove machinist
3844578 Chant Adolphus 15 Somerset Stoke Stonemason
3844579 Chant Margaret 8 Somerset Stoke
3844580 Chant Kathleen 6 Somerset Stoke
Any help please? Any descendants out there?
Cheers,
John
Hello listers,
Children of Sampson Chant 1834 and Susan nee Murley should be around in the
1901 census but it is a job to pick them out! I find it so anyway, and there
follows a bit of speculation. Does anyone have proof and onward lines for the
children please. I have them, all born Stoke-sub-Hamdon, as:
John J abt 1855
William 1857
Elizabeth 1860 and died bef 1862
Henry 1861 and died bef 1871
Elizabeth 1862
Anna 1862 died 1959 married James Terrell
James abt 1865
Sara Jane abt 1868 die Stoke abt 1955
Louis or Lewis 1871
William Henry known as Henry abt 1874
Joseph 1876
Is this John J from the Camberwell, Surrey census?
1777649 Chant John 45 Somerset Stoke Stonemason
1777650 Chant Priscilla 43 Hants Southsea
1777651 Chant William 23 Hants Southsea Timekeeper
Perhaps Lewis who was in Plumstead, London?
2077282 Chant Lewis 30 Somerset Stoke Police Constable
2077283 Chant Louisa 29 Dorset Sherborne
And how about William living with mum and in the Stoke census?
3844337 Chant Susan 66 Somerset Stoke
3844338 Chant William 43 Somerset Stoke Police Pensioner
3844339 Chant Sarah 32 Somerset Stoke Forewoman in glove factory
3844340 Chant Walter 27 Somerset Stoke Glove cutter
Be pleased to get some ideas on this family.
Thanks,
John
Hello Listers,
For all of these both birth and census place is Stoke-sub-Hamdon on the 1901
census
3843960 Chant Alfred 35 Glove manufacturer
3843961 Chant Rose 36
3843962 Chant Percy 7
3843963 Chant Leonard 2
3843964 Chant Kathleen 1
Can anyone help with them please?
Cheers,
John
Does anyone know the family please? I feel it should be one of 'mine' but
can't find Alfred in the 1881 census or a marriage on Free BMD.
Rose could be Rose Locock as she is the right age from the 1881 census and
sister Sarah married first a Hockey, then Philip Chant 1846 (son of David
Chant and Sarah nee Taylor). There are a couple of other Roses of the right
age though.
Beryl, you collect Hockeys, can you help with Sarah's first husband please?
Dear Listers
A couple of queries please:-
1) I wonder if anyone is descended from or has any knowledge of Charles
Chant born about 1841 in London(aged 9 in 1851 census staying with a Chant
Uncle and Aunt) - his Father is possibly also Charles born 1817 Odcombe
Somerset.
2) Descendents or knowledge regarding Frederick W. Chant born abt 1879 in
Sydenham Kent and married Ruth (surname unknown born Swindon Wiltshire). His
parents were Frederick Chant (born 1853 Sydenham Kent) and Alice Mary
(Vyse) and he had siblings Nellie( abt 1882 Sydenham) Percy ( abt 1890
Hampstead) Elsie (abt 1898 Hampstead) and Leslie (1900 Hampstead). Would of
course be interested in any information regarding the other children as
well.
Frederick and his wife are living in Harrow on the Hill in 1901 and
Frederick and Alice with the younger siblings in Bledlow Buckinghamshire.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hello Michael
I wonder if you could help me please. I have been checking older emails and
one has me confused. It was dated 24/8/2002 with the above subject
heading.
It concerns Elizabeth CHANT, widow, with her family - Jabez, Thomas, Mary,
Anna Maria and Alexander. She came to Australia on the "Octavia" and what I
would like is details of the family please.
It is rather confusing the way it is set out and I am not certain who
belongs to who - especially from (F) down as to the children, marriages and
their children.
Thank you in advance.
