Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Greetings
I encourage members to introduce yourselves again and detail
briefly your family interests. I hope to hear from out newer
members already recently subscribed in the last few months.
Your very quiet. I have noticed on other reasonably sized
lists that new members are introduced to the list. Maybe
this will help people to not be so shy. We are a friendly
and helpful bunch on the Chant list.
So here goes our first Newby Introduction.
Lets have a warm welcome for Helen Dunham whose a Chant
descendant via her mothers side. Her Chant interests are
in Marnhull, Dorset from 1690 so I am certain fellow list
member Rita Chant with Marnhull Chant to 1706 will have
lots to discuss.

G'Day Listers,
This is the first and last message I want to see on the lists
about this subject.
DO NOT OPEN ANYTHING THAT SAYS SEE ATTACHED.
If you were not expecting it. GET RID OF IT NOW.
A nasty new virus was only detected on the 11th
of April 2001, it is new.......
Recently other lists have experienced problems
with this Worm, the Magistr Virus.
It is described as W32.Badtrans.13312@mm
by Virus Engines that can detect it. But it's
nasty because it has multiple names.
Not all Virus software has updates able to identify
and remove the Worm. Though it does not get through
to the lists. It gets you by sending directly to you
from those who post to the list. Someone with the
Virus recieves a copy of your message from the list.
Then the virus sends a message to the address the
message came from before being sent to rootsweb.
So you will find some of those posting to the list
may be getting the virus sent to them by a lister
who is unknowingly infected. It copies most of the
senders message as if someone hit reply and has an
attachment with the message see attached or similar.
I got this one myself because the MacAfee update
missed it. I downloaded InoculateT and the latest
update and caught two copy's in my system. Hopefully
now clean. Those using Outlook or Outlook Express are
most at risk from this virus.
" Describing it as an "anti-emulation, polymorphic
with advanced infection algorithms® Patrick Nolan,
virus researcher for McAfee AVERT says this
newest threat, "sets up tricks to make it harder
for virus researchers to debug it." Not being able
to predict, with 100% accuracy, what Magistr will
do next, makes detecting it all the more harder. "
** How to recogise the W32/Badtrans-A virus **
If you receive a reply to a _ List_ message which
contains several lines from your original
message followed by this phrase:
Take a look to the attachment
The worm will attach itself to the email, using one
of the following to date known file names:
Pics.ZIP.scr
images.pif
README.TXT.pif
New_Napster_Site.DOC.scr
news_doc.scr
hamster.ZIP.scr
YOU_are_FAT!.TXT.pif
searchURL.scr
SETUP.pif
Card.pif
Me_nude.AVI.pif
Sorry_about_yesterday.DOC.pif
s3msong.MP3.pif
docs.scr
Humor.TXT.pif
fun.pif
SO TAKE CARE. I GOT IT AND IT IS NOT A HOAX.
I do not want to see what happened on other lists. People were
accusing innocent people of wilful damage, Stupidity etc. New
Viruses are created all the time. Unless you have updated virus
scan software every hour on the hour and from software suppliers
who have debugged the virus no one is immune from being sent a
infected email. The best that can be done is to be aware they are
around and be careful about opening attachments you weren't expecting.
