Dear Michael,
Re your e-mail of the 23rd.December.
I got into my files & have printed out family record sheets from the unknown
Mr.Chant who apparently was a fisherman of Dorset, England. I've found
where I got the information from now.. from Rhonda Wicks on
http://www.homestead.com & I have the print out I did in front of me.
.I didn't have any parents for Robert born c.1766 who marr.c.1780
to Sarah Kellaway.but I have now. I see that mystery Martha born c.1782 is
in the family of
the unknown Mr.Chant.
I'll send these copies & the copies of the charts mentioned in
prev.e-mail by mail.to you.
Regards,
Janette on a very wet Christmas Day.
Dear Michael,
Re your query re Robert Chant who married 1765 to an
Elizabeth. I have this Robert as chris.12.2.1739 West Chinnock, Somerset.
This Robert is a brother of my ancestor George chris.2.11.1746 West Chinnock
and also Mary chris.25.8.1751 as mentioned by Linda in her e-mail of the
22nd..( Their parents were Robert born 1719 & wife Elizabeth ..unknown). I
have the children of Robert & Elizabeth who marr.1765 as Ann chris.30.7.1766
who marr. Wm.Lang, John born & died 1769, Mary chris.16.1`2.1770 & buried
29.3.1854 & James
born 14.8.1774 & chris.28.8.1774 who marr. 30.11.1795 to Mary Mudford & died
1853 in Middle Chinnock.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Janette
Hello John
It was mentioned earlier that from David Chant info was sent
that Joseph 1686 (I assume the one from West Chinnock) has
a * after it meaning all issue known but we haven't got
any for him recorded or his issue.
Can you ask David about this or do you have info he has on
this? Oh and great about the Gale/Chant line info. New
branches to add to the tree all helps with the giant jigsaw
puzzle that is the various Chant lines.
Rosena Chant bapt when? Daniel and Mary bapt ?
Siblings were ? Married ? Descendants of these are?
Merry Christmas
Michael Cheeseman
Greetings listers
Can anyone help lister Rita Nye looking for a Benjamin
Chant in either Somerset or Dorset born between 1720-1745?

Hello All,
Does anyone else have any comments on Janette's thought's about Robert b. 1725 who married Elizabeth Davies, and then a 2nd marriage to Susannah 'Tett/Gott'.
The only problem I have with this is that on the parish registers transcripts on the Stoke Sub Hamdon site it say's that Robert was a batchelor.............
Any comments ?
Kind Regards

Hello Michael!. It's Janette Here.
Re your e-mail re West Chinnock Chant info.wanted.
I got into my files & found some charts that I had sent to me from David
Chant in Essex when I found out that I wasn't descended from his line of
Robert born 1700 to Cicely.
On one chart up the top it says Thomas c.1665 marr. Mary of W.Chinnock near
Crewkerne, Somerset, England & has their children.as follows:-
Joseph 1686 & has a * after it meaning all issue known but I haven't got
any for him recorded.
Robert 1700-1741 who married Sistely (Cecily).
Jerimiah 1700....( possibly a twin of above?)
Jemima 1702.
Now re the children of Robert & Cicely.further info.
I have Robert chris. 6.2.1725 West chinnock who married Elizabeth Davis
8.10.1750. I have that she was born about March 1727 & that her parents were
Sarah & Margaret...
Here are the children of Robert & Elizabeth (Davis)
1) William chris.4.11.1753 W.C. & Buried 1755 W.C.
2) Elizabeth chris.31.3.1755 W.C. & died c.1755
3) William chris.14.7.1756 W.C. & marr.4.12.1779 to Eleanor Hallett &
bur.27.3.1825.
4) Elizabeth chris.9.10.1757 W.C.
I notice that on my sheet for the above I have Ann chris.30.7.1766,
John born 26.11.1769, Mary chris.16.23.2770 & James born 14.8.1774 who
marr.Mary Mudford but according to the chart in front of me they are
children of Robert born 1739 who married 1765 West Chinnock (he's the
brother of my George chris. 2.11.1746 ). I didn't have any children for
Robert chris.1739 so I'll shift the 4 above over now.
Now I've had another thouight...since Robert & Elizabeth Davis had
their last child chris.9.10.1757 W.C. & I haven't got a death date for
Elizabeth I wonder if Robert married Susannah Tett 6.5.1760...this would
solve who are the parents of Robert of this marriage. What do you think ?.
The 3rd chart that I have shows :-
Agnes Chaunt 1555-1620,
William Chaunt c.1563-1614 marr.1584 to Alice White & descendants down to a
Joane Chaunt 1662 & Thomas Chaunt 1665. This Thomas's parents were Thomas
1630=1670 who marr.1653 to Gertrude Hendy of Shepton Beauchamp. On the chart
it says that she died in 1665 the year that Thomas died.
On looking at the chart I was wonderng if Thomas married Mary of West
Chinnock first & then when she died married to Mary Virgin in 1.11.1707 my
line. I notice that the last child for the 1st Thomas & Mary was
bapt.11.1.1707 West Chinnock but..that would make him having Robert born
1700 & then later on my robert bapt.1719. What do you think?.
Now to John born 26.9.1727 who married Dianah Templeman..I have him as died
1782.
Now to William chris.1738 I have that he married Anne Lang 26.6.1739..I
haven't got any children recorded.
Now to Elizabeth (Betty) bapt.15.5.1733 in your list & I have 1735 and that
she married 11.2.1760 to William Patten.
Here's the children that I have for William & Betty.
1) Robert chris.11.2.1761 Chiselborough &
buried 8.12.1768
2) William chris.16.1.1766 & buried 22.11.1852. I have two marriages for
him.
1 .20.2.1792 to Susannah Mudford.
2. .5.10.1800 to Ann Caller
3) Robert chris.30.10.1770 W.C. & marr.1.5.1798 to Mary Shore
4) Joseph born 1773 W.C. chris.4.7.1773 W.C.& marr.26.10.1796 to Ann Cleal &
bur.13.8.1843.
5) Isaac chris.8.3.1778 W.C.& marr.21.2.1805 W.C.to Martha Fry &
bur.22.4.1859
6) Samuel born 14.1.1767 & marr.1789 to Mary Sheckle.
Another chart I have lists Thomas & Mary of West chinnock on one side &
says 1 mile away small villages & then Thomas marr.to Mary Virgin of Middle
Chinnock & below this lists some of the line for Robert & Cicely down & also
for my Robert chris.1719 down.I hope the above helps someone.
I hope you can understand the above.
P.S. I'll do photo-copies of the charts that I got from David Chant & send
them to you.
Regards,
Janette Pfeifer in Warragul South, Victoria, Australia.
Hello Michael,
As I recall from David's hand-written tree and records on other pages, he has
Mary as mother of Robert 1700 with a father Thomas (or possibly Joseph) for
Robert, Jeremiah 1703 and Ann 1707. Joseph as a son of Mary appears before
Thomas (or Joseph) comes visibly on the scene. He may be a child of Mary's
but we have him born in 1686 and if this is so and Mary is indeed his mother,
this being the case, he is most likely to have been base born.
At the moment I have not got a father recorded for any of Mary's children
although I understand that if there is one his name could be either Thomas
(first choice) or Joseph (unlikely). Not much help I'm afraid but it was as
far as we got when I spoke to David in the summer at the Stoke under Ham
family history weekend and that page was open.
He is now chasing Priddle, Vigar and Jeanes connections, among others, having
given up on Mary until something more concrete materialises. As long as he
looks at the wider band of family names the better it will be for we may well
find round about connections this way: like my Gale family and possibly like
Kerry's Strong and Stoodley connections, where he has both names but no
connections yet.
Whilst mentioning other family names and connections has anyone any HANSFORDs
or STANTONs please? William Stanton 1828 Thorncombe married 11.5.1849 (St.
Mary's Stoke under Ham) Elizabeth Hansford 1825 Stoke Abbott begat Elizabeth

Hello Michael,
You raised Christopher under the 'Martha' heading. What a hotchpotch I have

Sources are a mixture of Ronda Wicks/Philip Chant and IGI. Whilst some IGI is
suspect and we don't know who put the entries there it seems likely that the
emigration did not take place until after Christopher Hull Chant was born.
Has anyone found a point of entry record to Canada please? This is not one of
my family lines but does include the magnificently named Onesiphorus in its
number and I'd like to tie him in with my Stoke lot. He did live there for a
time and can be found on one of the censuses.
Regards,
John
Hi Linda and everyone
has anyone extracted any other West Chinnock PR
Info? If so would appreciate details.
Previously I posted :
Firstly I have at West Chinnock a Robert Chant
b? circa 1705 married circa 1737 to Elizabeth
(Surname unknown). The marriage would
have occurred before the 1744 West Chinnock
marriage register entries begin.
2) Robert Chant bapt. West Chinnock 12.02.1740
married circa 1765 to Elizabeth ? (surname unknown).
I have James and Mary listed with Robert b 1740
Can anyone prove a marriage date and place plus Elizabeth's
surname?

Hello Michael and All,
Firstly may I take this opportunity to wish one and all a very pleasant and
peaceful Christmas.
Now back to business, now that Michael has everyone's attention on
'Robert's'............ When I visited the Taunton RO last July I noted a
couple of births of children to 'Robert and Elizabeth' they are - Mary bapt.
16 Dec 1770 and James bapt. 2 Aug 1774. Both bapt. West Chinnock.
I thought that these two children belonged to 'my' Robert and Elizabeth
Davies, but am not sure, nobody else seems to have them attached to these
parents. And I think that the 1st Robert and Elizabeth Unknown are too old.
Is there another younger Robert who married another Elizabeth ?
What does everyone else think......... Can I add them on after -
Mary 1751 - William 1753 - Elizabeth 1755 - William 1756 - Elizabeth 1757 -
Mary 1770 - James 1774. It doesn't look right to me, too bigger gap in the
middle, perhaps I've missed some more ?
Kind Regards

Hello Jan, John and list....
I had nothing much on Sylvestor Chant and thank you for that information.
However, in the William Chant married Eleanor Hallett part of your email I
have an extra person.
I have Elizabeth bapised 14/8/1785 who married William Fry on 1/1/1804 in
West Chinnock. Though I have no family names listed for them I do have
mentioned that they had lots of children.
Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction if I have erred.
Thanks.

Hello Listers,
On the IGI and shown as submitted by Colin Whitehead of NSW is William
Baulch
born c1788 marrying Honour Chant 7.12.1830 at St Mary's, Stoke under Ham.
This Honour is shown as the daughter of John Chant and Jane Ford. Originally
I had tied them together but looking at census information on the Stoke
database pages
<
http://www.genealogyhelp.co.uk/England/somerset/stoke%20sub%20hamdon/stoke.h
tm
>
it looks as if the marriage was between another William and Honour daughter
of Thomas Chant and Mary Spearing, granddaughter of John and Jane.
BAULCH children from various census postings, baptisms and burials look
like:
William c1831
Walter bef 13.3.1833-bef 19.3.1833 (lived 6 days)
Walter c1834
Mary Emma c1836
Simeon 1840
Sarah 1847
Elizabeth 1849
The first 5 born Stoke under Ham and the last 2 possibly along the road in
East Stoke. There is also a big gap between Simeon and Sarah so there may be
other children's births and deaths in another location.
Has anyone thoughts about this family please?

Greetings
John,Beryl, Janette, Robert and others on list please advise
if you know of additional info. Can those tracing these
lines let me know.
England's Anglican Parish registers of baptism, marriage
and burial were ordered by the King to be kept in the
year 1538, although only 21 parishes in Somerset
have registers preserved from so early a date. A
compulsory edict to keep these registers was made in 1597.
In most cases these registers continue after the
start of civil registration in 1837 and are useful
to cross reference against Birth, Death and Marriage
Certificates from 1837 onwards. As well we can cross
reference against Census entries 1841,51,61,71,81,91.
For 1901 it is being released online next year.
As I understand it the West Chinnock Parish Registers
begin for baptism in 1683, marriages from 1744 and burials
from 1678. The varying dates for these may indicate that
earlier registers from 1538-1682 for Baptisms, 1538-1743
for marriages and burials 1538-1678 may have been lost.
Does anyone know if this is the case? Fire, Flood, Wars?
Or were other Chapels/Parishes doing the church functions
for some reason. I know sometimes this occurred for various
reasons.
Normally with missing registers an alternative is the
Bishop's transcripts sent to the Bishop every year.
Unfortunately for Somerset they were sent to Wells were
they were kept in very damp conditions. Many are said to
be beyond saving, others are being restored. Some are
available on film at the SRO as I understand it.
Has anyone checked to see if West Chinnock Bishops
transcripts have survived and are available? Good for
cross referencing as well because they sometimes contain
additional information for the Bishop.
To date with such records as they are I have Thomas and Mary
Chant of West Chinnock who had :
Joseph Chant 1686
Jerrimiah Chant 1703
Ann Chant 1707.
It is possible Mary above is the same Mary that that is
the mother of Robert Chant b 23.09.1700 in West Chinnock.
Mary and Thomas's marriage if at West Chinnock is not
available. Does anyone know if marriages at this time were
held at some other nearby Parish?
Can anyone add full dates or other details including
marriages and children to the above?
I have Robert married to a cicely (no date or place of
marriage but circa 1722? falls before the start of the
marriage register) and at West Chinnock children
baptised as follows.
1) Brigard bapt. 9.07.1722 died pre 1732
2) John bapt.16.04.1724 died pre 1727
3) Robert bapt.6.02.1725
married Chisleborough 8-10-1750 Elizabeth Davis
4) John bapt.26.09.1727
married circa 1753 Dianah Templeman
5) Thomas bapt. 8.09.1730 died pre 1735
6) Brigard bapt. 3.06.1732
7) Elizabeth (Betty)bapt. 15.05.1733
8) Thomas bapt. 25.06.1735
9) William bapt. 14.08.1738
married 26.06.1759 West Chinnock to Anne Lang
Would appreciate full dates for Joseph, Jerrimiah and Ann
as well as any other extra info for above entries.

Hi Chant Researchers,
As you all have been so admirably successful recently "digging up" Chant
relatives, I thought I would take up Michael's suggestion and re-post my
interests and brick wall. I am descended from Chants who, I believe,
originated in the Odcombe area. The earliest Chant for whom I have acceptable
documentation is John Chant (b. Approximately 1766, possibly Brympton,
Somerset) who married Mary Davis in May 1786 at Puncknowle, Dorset. Both
were otp married by Banns. Witness's were Robert Chant and Joseph Cox.
Settlement papers filed in Puncknowle on 6 Dec 1800 are difficult to read
but place John Chant's birth at Brumpton (?sp?) In the county of Somerset the
son of John Chant who (at that time) lived in Leuyon (?sp illegible?) In the
county of Somerset. John (the younger) was adjudged to be a legal resident of
Odcombe and awarded assistance. John, Jr. profession was listed as mole
catcher.
Chants do not show up anywhere in the parish records of Puncknowle.
John Chant (the younger) and Mary Davis had the usual gaggle of children and
moved to Piddletown, Dorset where John Chant died May 16, 1811.
I cannot find the parish records for Brumpton/Brampton and these Chants do
not show up in the Yoevil/Odcombe records I can get though the Morman Church.
In Odcombe there is a John Chant (b. Poss. 1733) who married Margaret Fuller
(m. 6 May 1758) and had Wm (b. 1771) Mary (b. 1774) and Tho. (B. 1778) but no
other further records of children–especially John Jr. and possible brother
Robert (marriage witness.)
If anyone can offer suggestions/or recognizes these folks, I would appreciate
any information you have.
Happy Holidays.
