Having the atlas open in front of me, i can see that Weymouth and
Dorchester are very close to Portland, so maybe the family did spread
out to some of these places first before heading for Bristol, which is
where i was born. Having loaded my grandparents names into the system
what came back was that my granfathers father was William christened in
Nrtn-Sub-Hamden,Somerset,Sep 1850, do i beleive this?, i;m sorry,i
forgot to mention my grand-parents names (Joseph Chant, and Mary Blake.
My Mother Queenie May Chant one of thirteen chidren, and I aint listing
all of them.
The e-mail of Michael Cheeseman on 1 June 2000 enquired about William Chant
and Harriet Philips, their marriage and children. Here is the information
you require.
William Chant married Anna Phillips at Sherborne on 23 July 1798, together
they produced six children,
Richard Chant bapt 26 Jan 1799 Sherborne,
Susanna Chant bapt 31 Oct 1801 Sherborne,
Sally Philip Chant bapt 12 Feb 1803,

Antony- I see what you mean with Mary Hallett being 12-13 years old at
time of marriage 20 August 1835. Did girls marry that young? Her
husband would be about 31 at that time?? This is my cousin's husband's
research and I too question it. Beryl
Hello Michael, Beryl, and All,
I have been looking for a baptism of George Chant around 1748 near Bradford
Abbas with no luck. This morning I surfed the FamilySearch.org and found
George Chant son of Robert Chant & Elizabeth baptised 2 November 1746 West
Chinnock.
This has to be the correct parents because it was common practice to name
one or two of your children the same as the grandparents, which George and
Elizabeth did in 1803 and 1806.
The baptism of Hannah Chant in 1794 to George & Betty is the same couple as
George & Elizabeth, there are no other candidates. This fixes the marriage
of George and Elizabeth to between his 21st birthday in 1789 and the birth
of the first child in 1794. I expect that the marriage would be in or
around West Chinnock. With them regularly taking their family to visit the
grandparents is how their son George (1801) met and married Mary Hallett of
West Chinnock between 1832 and 1836.
'I love it when a plan comes together.'
Regards,
Antony Nailer.

Dear Pamela,
You listed your husbands' ancestors back to 1563 which
is really very impressive but did not state where the baptism and marriage
events take place.
So that the rest of us studying the Chants may be able to tie you work into
our own, would it be possible for you to add the places of the events,
please, please?

Greetings Chant list members
I assume Anthony and Beryl are still seeking
one George Chant born circa 1768 married
Elizabeth ? who settled in Bradford Abbas,
Dorset.
Children there from 1801 though a Hannah
in 1794 daughter of George and Elizabeth at
Bradford Abbas has been found. Anyone who can
add to details listed below which I have hopefully transcribed correctly
would assist two very helpful
list members.
Possibly George is from the West Chinnock or Stoke
lines but could also be from another Dorset or even
Wiltshire family.
The only possible match to date is with George
Chant who married Elizabeth Crabb(e) in Beamster
in 1796 , though this Elizabeth it is thought has
shown up in Melbury Osmond in 1799 with a son
John and George's whereabouts unknown

Greetings Chant list members
Recommend reposting family lines research
as we have some new members.
It should be remembered that Stoke Sub Hamden,Yeovil
area, West Chinnock, Bradford Abbas and Sherborne
were all relatively close to each other. The Chant
name being concentrated along the Dorset and Somerset
Border are very likely all related. Finding the vital
link to show this is the hard part.
We know from these families people went to Yorkshire,
Scotland, Canada, the US,New Zealand and Australia.
Many of these families having missing branches not yet
known what happened to them. The aim of this list is
to help each other connect up or further advance
knowledge of our Chant families. The Old Wiltshire
group maybe from a very old branch or the name
started there independently. As this part involves researching Manorial
rolls the Hearth Taxes and
earlier pre Parish register sources it may be
difficult to establish a link if there was one.

In reply to Christine's question about
Chant's in Dorset.
There are the Chant Families at Sherborne,
Bradford Abbas, Holwell in Dorset to name
some.
You have not given much details about your
Portland Chant family to go on but as the
name does not appear to have been there long
it's probably safe to say the family migrated
from somewhere else.
The High activity with the West Chinnock and
Stoke Sub Hamden lines is due to the fact that
families from other areas have been found to
descended from Chants there.
Could you provide details of your Portland
Chant family to aid others on the list to see
if your family is a missing branch of their
own from somewhere else.

I read the messages about Chants in Somerset, but i have not yet read
anything about any Chants in Dorset, especially in the Portland area,if
anybody out there has any connections with Dorset i would be very
interested in hearing from them. As this is where my family originally
started out from, then made there way up to Bristol, which is where they
mostly are today, except for a small number of my Mothers cousins still
living in Portland. My Grandfather was Joseph Chant and my Grandmother
Mary Blake.
Thank you for the information. Beryl

Stoke-Sub-Hamdon is in fact in Somerset, about half an hour from
Taunton by car. It is an old village which is expanding all the time,
but apparently quite unique in that a good number of families have
remained in the village for hundreds of years.

Details of marriage certificate-1860 Parish Church, Sherborne, Dorset.
No. 116. Date: 28 May 1860. John Vernon, 28, bachelor, excavator, res.
Sherborne. Father George Vernon. Mary Elizabeth Chant, 21, spinster, res.
Sherborne; father George Chant. Wit. by Charles and Mary Chant.
Certificate from Somserset House, London, 2 Jan. 1972 (obtained by a
relative). Subsequent census records show them living next door to
George Chant in Bradford Abbas. John Vernon came to USA around 1871;
his wife and six children followed him about 2 years later. Family
rumor has it that John was poaching; was caught at it; hit a bobby and
left the country in haste. Also family story that when Mary Elizabeth
was leaving England for the US, with the six children, at the last moment
Thomas was missing. She had to go on without him. A small boat came out
as they were leaving harbor with said Thomas on it. Bet he got a good
spanking! Beryl
