I was wondering if anyone has come across the name CHANNING during their
research. I have found that it is often written as CANNON or CHANNON i
some records. I have included my area of research below in case it ties
in with the information of some of your members...
I am researching John Channing born around 1841 - 1844..possibly in
Torquay as that is what his gravestone in Newfoundland says. He came to
Newfoundland sometime before 1863 (when his first child was born). He
was married in the catholic church and converted all on the same day in
1879. My father used to say that he was an apprenticed to a fellow in
England and ran away. Another story I have heard was that he was a
crewman on a ship and was injured during a stopover in Newfoundland and
left there. He is the only Channing to come to Newfoundland ...there are
no others. I appreciate any help I may get. If he is in your database he
would most likely show up as having no record of marriage, children or
death as these all occurred in Newfoundland.
Thank you
Channing
