Hello Jennifer,
Thank you for your response to my email, and for providing the Archive
address. I have also had two off List contacts. I have responded to them
in kind.
I do agree that it may better for us to contact through the List . This
would allow us to gauge the strength of the List, and perhaps the number of
interested parties. It would also save a great deal of time and effort
when
posting to the List rather than posting several responses to
different
people off List. This is particually so when what we have here is
virtually
a "one name" List.
I note your information with interest, and am sure you will not be suprised
to read that my Channing also originate from Tiverton, and Exeter in Devon.
Corresponding with other researchers this seems to be the main centre of
interest. This being so I am sure there is a connection with all of us
somewhere. The first names, James and William, are also very popular.
GGGfather James Channing, on his marriage certificate, 1859, gives his
place
of birth as Tiverton. In the Devon 1851 census his birthplace is
given as
Exeter. He was born, circa 1839. James, then aged 20yrs and his wife
Henrietta Andrews, aged 19yrs, are
the founders of the Jersey, Channel Islands Channing family. There are a
good many of them. All the Channings had large families. Par for the
course
in those days. His gdaughter, Emily, was my grandmother. Needless to
say,
I am also Jersey. I am fairly up to speed on the Jersey branch. I use the
75 year convention were I have only research those born 75years ago or
before.
Of course I know some who are still alive. This data, and that of their
respective families is for family consumption only.
James father, also James, was born, circa 1799(?), and in the 1851 Devon
census gives his place of birth as Exeter. Odd to tell, he was a labourer,
and yet in 1851, owned a large house and had two servants. I wonder how he
managed that?
I hope we can keep this List going. Perhaps a motto should be " Channing,
anywhere any time".
Sorry to babble on
Best wishes
Michael
PS: I Have builders in my home at present and they are chasing me from
room
to room. It will take about three months to complete the work. Until
then
my responses will be erratic, please bear with me.
