OK, coming down from high horse and trying to be helpful. Sorry to have
offended any one, but right now this family is driving me to
distraction. I thought it was all figured out and proven in the early
generations until I was asked by a descendent lately for proofs. To my
surprise, I really do not have many. If anyone has more than the
following, please share.
JEREMIAH CHANNEL SR, with wife Nancy. Found in Hardy Co. WV in 1787. Had
moved to Randolph Co. by 1793 when he bought land near present day
Huttonsville. Died 1798, mentioning son Jeremiah, Jr. and wife Nancy.
Jeremiah Jr. was married to Sarah Steele. Proven by affadavit in
Randolph Court House where he swears that he never knew his father in
law Henry Steele of Hardy Co to have received anything for his
Revolutionary Service. No marriage license has been found.
Jeremiah Jr. died 1854 leaving a will that is in the court papers of a
suit in the Circuit Court of Randolph Co. naming his children as Samuel,
Jemima, John C., Susannah, Elizabeth, (he also had an Andrew who died
without leaving children). The above Jemima married Thomas Wamsley and
moved to Ohio where several of her Wamsley cousins had settled.
A son of Jemima wrote to a cousin and to identify himself said that his
mother was a daughter of Jeremiah Channel of Randolph who had two
brothers, John and Joseph living in Ohio.
So these are the proofs: Jeremiah Channell and wife Nancy
Children: Jeremiah, Jr, Joseph, John.
John and Joseph are both found in Licking Co. Ohio before 1810. A John
and a Joseph bought land in Randolph and sold it before then.
TRADITION: John supposedly was raised for a time by the indians and was
a great bear hunter.
There are TRADITIONS: Jeremiah, Joseph, John, and Aaron who was lost at
sea came from Ireland and settled in America. The parents of these boys
are Thomas and Elizabeth Montgomery Channell of the Carolinas. Jeremiah
and Joseph married sisters--Hodges. Evidentally there is another one, a
brother Samuel has joined also.
Where are the proofs for the early generations? I have given what I
have. This is the help I can give. Can anyone add help?
