Listers:
I'd like to present some information here and see if anyone can offer some clues to
who the Joseph and Sarah are.
The 1850 Ohio Census: (Ohio/Highland County/Clay Twp/Page 308)
House/Family Number: (231/231)
There is a Marshall Channel (age 12) residing with a Reason Hopkins, Farmer, age 70.
House/Family Number: (232/232)
There is a Samuel Channel (age 10) residing with a Henry Hopkins, Farmer, age 36
House/Family Number: (233/233)
There is a Joseph Channel operating a family farm:
Channel, Joseph 35 Farmer Virginia
Sarah 36 House Keeper Ohio
Miles 13 Ohio
Sally 11 Ohio
Julia A 7 Ohio
Cynthia A 7 Ohio
Here's the issue: The children listed under Joseph and Sarah are not their children,
they are the children of Solomon and Catherine (Taggert) Channell, married in 1833 in
Virginia. Marshall and Samuel, the two boys are living with the neighbors; Henry and
Reason Hopkins, probably a father/son. Marshall and Samuel are also Solomon's and
Catherine's children. Catherine died Sept. 23, 1845, and Solomon has disappeared on
this census. There are an additional 5 children missing -- Solomon and Catherine had 11
children in just over 12 years, the last three being born in 1842 are triplets: Julia A.,
Cynthia A., and Lydia A. Where Lydia and the other children are during this census is not
known. She does reappear later on in life and marries Bainbridge Dunn, and seven of the
total eleven children are named in Solomons probate case in Missouri in 1870.
There is an indication that Solomon may have married a Sally/Sarah Gearen(in) 3 Nov 1847
in Highland County, and he definately does marry for a second/third time to Catherine
Lance 14 Feb 1864 in Highland County, just prior to their departure for Clark County,
Missouri where Solomon dies approx. April of 1870.
So, the burning question is -- who is this Joseph and Sarah?
Input greatly appreciated.
