Ms Loudin:
My Great-grandfather was William Henry Channel, born in Jackson Co., TN, on
March 9, 1842. Existing records do not identify his father, at least the
records we have found.
Mr.(?) Channel supposedly married Minerva Shadden in Jackson Co., TN, around
1840.
Minerva, according to family legend, was Cherokee, so perhaps it was not a
legally recognized marriage.
Not too long after the birth of Wm. Henry, his father disappeared. Whether
he abandoned the wife and son or if he died, we do not know.
Minerva married a Richard Morgan and eventually the family moved to
Montgomery Co., Ill, where all three appeared in the 1860 US Census.
Would you have any knowledge of a Channell/Channel that might have been the
father, and if so, where that person's family originated?
Our present family wonders if "William" or "Henry" could have been
the
father's or grandfather's given name, judging by the European custom in
naming children.
Any help, guidance, or even wild guesses would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Bill
