Nancy:
I switched e-mails sometime after the last posting in 2002 and lost contact. I'm a
grandson of George Everett Channell via his sone George Wesley Channell (born June 20,
1926, died Jan 16, 1972. I would love to find more about this line. In fact, I'm
hoping to go to Philly sometime soon (I live in Washington, D.C.) to see if I can find his
obituary. Unfortunately, George Everett committed suicide during the Great Depression,
but the letter I have from Blanche to my grandmother Evelyn Wade Channell Ferguson (died
around 1990) accompanying the suicide note says that it was covered "in all the
papers, even Philadelphia." I know nothing about him, nor do I know anything about
the Channell Brothers other than that they had a hotel.
I'd love to get anything you've got and fill you in on my own lapsed research. I
can best be reached at wchannell(a)usaid.gov.
By the way, I remember Blanche well. We called her Auntie, as she lived with
"Nanna" - grandmother Channell - in Atlantic City. I remember when she moved to
a nursing home in Manassas, Virginia, putting her close to her nephew and my uncle Don
Channell, who died in 1983.
In the interest of disclosure, my dad and uncle were deeply affected by their father's
suicide. It plagued Daddy all his life, until he followed suit in 1972, putting an end to
a kind of pain I unfortunately understand all too well. My Uncle Don waited another 10
years before killing himself "accidently" by stepping in front of a car in the
early 1980s. My brother Wesley and I both found it very significant to make it past 45,
my father's age when he took his life.
And yet, despite their tragic deaths, Wes and Don were beautiful, loving and lovable men.
I have missed them all of my life.
Best regards,
Wade Channell
