Ernestine:
I appreciate your response and suggestions on records and depositories to
check in reference to my query on Thomas
Channell. I appear to have not have made myself clear enough about what I
was looking for.
To clarify:
Thomas Channell with/or without an Elizabeth Montgomery is widely accepted
to be the father of Jeremiah, Joseph and
John Channell of early Hardy and Randolph Counties, (now West) Virginia and
later Washington, Licking, Highland, Brown and Clermont Counties, Ohio.
(Apologies for leaving out other folks Channell Virginia and Ohio counties,
I base this on my direct line ancestors). I base the phrase "widely
accepted" on the fact that after a review of some 67 gedcom files, the same
reference to this Thomas Channell (some with, some without reference to
Elizabeth Montgomery)
appear over and over. Additionally, 49 of the gedcom files I examined
contained a reference to the same information in a small paragraph of the
biography of Henry Channell as quoted in the History of Knox County, Ohio
published by A.A. Graham & Co. in 1881. Take a look at just about any
Channell family tree on the internet and you can see the same pattern of
repeating information over and over in an endless loop.
Without citing a 3 page bibliography of source records that I have
personally checked, and with the exception of early 1700's Will & Deed
records of Isle of Wight, Virginia that briefly note a Thomas, a Jeremiah, a
Joseph and a John Channell ( which would not fit the "widely accepted"
version ) I have found exactly zero of those source records that name a
Thomas Channell with or without an Elizabeth Montgomery Channell. I
personally have no confidence in a Thomas Channell being the boys father --
but prudent research demands a "last ditch" so to speak attempt at digging
up any scrap or hint that might boost my confidence. Accordingly, until
further evidence supporting it shows itself, I have delinked Thomas and
Elizabeth as the boys father and removed any further references in my master
gedcom to the Virginia Channell's to that effect.
So my query is simply this: does anyone researching Jeremiah Channell of
Virginia or his brothers John and Joseph Channell of Virginia and Ohio have
any family records prior to 1881 that give any creditability to the brothers
coming from South Carolina to Virgina and/or that their father is Thomas
Channell?
Thanks,
M.E. Mathews
