The two Chaney lines I have researched were English. Robert Cheyney was born c1636. I
ave not found definite verification but all indications have been that he came from
England. My direct ancestor Richard Cheyney 1616 was born in England. He
immigrated" to the Province of Maryland about 1649, though he did not execise his
land rights until 1658. It appears that he financed his own passage and that of his wife,
Charity. Since no children accompanied the couple it is evident that they were probably
recently married. He settled on the south side of South River in what was then All
Hallow's Parish. Before that year, the Episcopalians or Anglicans had established a
church at what was then known as The Ridge in that section. When the Church of England was
decreed the established church of Maryland in 1692 the various churches were requied to
keep records of vital statistics. The Richard Cheyney family brought their private birth
record dating from 1669 and had them entered in!
to the register. The Cheyney family records were among the oldest and most complete of
Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Richard became one of the largest land owners on South
River. He had plantations, Cheyney's Hill of 100 acres and Cheyney's Neck of 110
acres. ---Mary Margaret Neal."
