Hi,
I've been trying to tie one of my relatives Obadiah Chaney b. abt 1771 d. 1847 Green
Co., Ky to Jacob Chaney b.1715 d. abt. 1801 Pittsylvania Co., VA (without success that
is). Does anyone have any data on Jacobs Son James or his heirs identified as deceased in
his 1801 will?
Here is the data I have.
DEED BOOK 10, pg 467 Thomas BLAKE of Pittsylvania Co., VA. to John FITZGERALD of same for
30 (pounds) 1 Bay mare called "Polly" and one black colt called
"Shadow", etc. 3 Sep 1796, Wit: John FITZGERALD, Obadiah CHANEY //Thomas
O BLAKE.
The 1782 Pittsylvania Co. Census page 42 shows an entry for a John Fitzgerald. The entry
after next is for Ezekiel Chaney (Son of Jacob Chaney). Directly below that is Joshua
Dodson. On the same page same column Jacob Chaney is followed by David Dodson, and Rawley
Dodson.
Examining a number of deeds from that time frame shows that Fitzgerald's,
Chaney's, and Dodson's all took part in and/or witnessed transactions for each
other, thus the connection.
The 1782 Census for Pittsylania County Page 42 lists Fitzgerald, Dodson, Jacob Chaney,
Ezekiel Chaney (Son of Jacob) all in proximity to each other location wise in Pittsylvania
County Va.
The 1767 List of Tithables for Pittsylvania County VA identifies Jacob, James (Jas.), and
Ezekiel Chaney.
The 1777 Oaths of Alligence for Pittsylvania County VA lists Jacob Chaney, Joseph Chaney
(Son of Jacob), and Zekial Chaney (Ezekial) (Son of Jacob) but no James. Assume he may
have been deceased at this point.
The 1801 will of Jacob Chaney lists siblings most of whom have long been identified
Obadiah. Obadiah is not one of them. Jacobs will lists his first son James as deceased as
James "or his heirs" while in similar statement for son Isiah also deceased does
not mention heirs. This may infer that he had heirs e.g Obadiah.
Assuming above connection to be true, Obadiah would have been raised by Jacob
(Grandfather) or Ezekiel (Uncle) In Pittsylvania Co, VA prior to his move to Green Co.
KY.
Any additional comments, information or data on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
