This particular Ezekiel is most likely the son of Jacob Chaney whose will is probated
Pittsylvania County 22 Sep 1801. Jacob Chaney had several sons, of which some are
deceased. Would also be interested to know if all potential spouses have been accounted.
James Fears sold the land he purchased from Ezekiel Chaney within the year. There is no
wife relinquishing right of dower; however, the 1789 personal property tax listing in
Halifax County indicates James had a tithable son. Thus, the search for the former wife
of James Fears is on. In 1781, a Frances Fears was a member of the old County Line Church
located on the Pittslyvania/Halifax County, Virginia border. This church is located
around Sandy Creek which is north of Birches Creek. Maybe this Frances is the wife of
James Fears who died prior to 1790 when James sold his land and moved west.
Unfortunately, the will of Jacob Chaney does not mention that he has a deceased daughter
Frances Fears (relying that information posted on the internet is correct). But there is
another Frances Fears who could be this person in 1781. The father of James Fears is also
James Fears who lived in Prince Edward County. He died circa 1804 and names a daughter
Fanny (Frances). Her last !
name is
Chony when the will was written in 1797. Just recently it occurred that this name may be
misspelled for Chaney. To those who have researched Jacob's children, am I barking up
a positive tree or a wrong tree?

I have an Ezekiel Chaney b abt 1820 in Pittsylvania to Jackson Chaney and
Oura Stogsdill. There is possibly some relation with the similar name, so
if you find a relation, let me know.

Subject: [Chaney] Ezekial Chaney (Chainey), Pittsylvania and Halifax County,
Virginia 1789
Hi list,
Looking to correspond with those who are familiar with Ezekiel Chaney of
Pittsylvania County in the time frame described. Ezekiel Chaney sold 100
acres to James Fears in Halifax County in 1789. The land was in Halifax
County. I was hoping someone knew how Ezekiel acquired this land. The land
is located on the draughts of Birch Creek which flows from the Dan River (or
Bannister River, can't remember off the top of my head) into Pittsylvania
County near the North Carolina border.
James Fears later sold land in 1790 and most Fears researchers believe he
is the
James Fears enumerated in Pulaski County, KY 1810.
Thanks for you time.
