Mary,
I have not seen the name Savoy or Chaney in anything relating to my family.
The name was sometimes erroneously spelled Cheeney by some outside the
family. I know that spelling to be wrong because I have several examples of
James' signature, all witht the Cheney spelling.
While James was likely born in Vermont some sources have suggested New York
and another New Jersey.
I am a descendent of James' son Eugene Clement who was Fowlerville, MI last
surviving Civil War veteran. I have a picture of his marker and several
photographs of him, none predating say 1910.
Thanks for your interest and sorry I can't be of any help.
Sincerely,
Duane

I see your James C. Chaney (Cheney) came out of Vermont. do you know if
there is a tie to one Savoy Chaney (Cheney) that was also from Vermont,
whom
died in Civil war. if so I have found his in the Union Cemetery here
in
Fredericksburg, Va. and have a picture of his marker and marker number.
will be
more
than happy to send it to you. also do you know if your
Chaney's
(Cheney's)
connect to the Maryland and Middlesex, Va., Chaney's,
Cheney's, Chaynay's?
