Message Board Post:
I need some further assistance from other John Chandler and Lupo family researchers,
please.
John Chandler b. abt 1600, England (some think abt. 1599-exact date of birth unknown to me
and I have seen no documentation that proves the exact date of birth.)
d. Hampton, Elizabeth City Co., Virginia
This is the John Chandler who arrived in Jamestowne, Virginia;
"At the age of 9, John arrived in Virginia on 6 June 1610, landing at Jamestown on
Sunday June 10th.",
aboard the ship "Hercules of Rye" from London, England.
(Of whom, there is controversy over in regards to his relationship with Thomas
Willoughby/Willoby pertaining to his servitude/servant-indentured as shown in the
"Muster of the Inhabitants of Virginia" at Elizabeth Cittie-also referenced in
other places.)
I am reviewing some GedCom files sent to me by several Chandler researchers. I have
noticed in several of the files, that some researchers believe that John Chandler may have
been married previously before his marriage to:
Elizabeth --?-- (maiden name unknown to me-I have seen no documentation that verifies her
maiden name-she was married previously to Albiano Lupo and is frequently referred to as
"The Widow Lupo")
I also need assistance with the Lupo line.
The following is copied from the English - America website:
"Lupo, Phillip . . . . . . . . . 42 Arrived on the George in 1621
Willoby, Thomas . . . . . . . . 23 Ensign Arrived on the Prosporouse in 1610
Chaundler, John . . . . . . . . 24 (Servant) Arrived on the Hercules in 1610
Lupo, Albiano . . . . . . . . . 40 Leiueten: (Lieutenant) Arrived on the Swan in 1610
June, 1610 The Swan, from London, arrived at Virginia
Lupo, Albiano (Lt.) . . . -- Age 40 in Virginia Muster, February 7, 1624/5
Arrived on the George in 1616
Lupo, Elizabeth. . . . . . . . 28
Lupo, Temperance . . . . . . . . 4 Born in Virginia"
(incorrectly listed 1608, 1609, and 1611 in some sources)
Were Phillip and Albiano Lupo related, if so how?
The following is copied from a file that was shared with me:
"Land transactions suggest that John Chandler's "now wife Elizabeth" of
1636 was the widow Elizabeth Lupo. This would account for his rise in fortune, and his
acquisition of the Lupo land which was held by his son in 1683 and thereafter. It may be
that "now wife Elizabeth" was John Chandler's second wife, a first wife
having died between 1626-1636."
Other files refer to a possible first wife, but I felt this would give the example best
and their reasoning for the above statement. This is not stated as a fact, merely a
suggestion/hypothesis.
Does anyone know of a first wife? If so, what was her name, DOB, DOD, places, etc.,
please? Were there any children by this marriage?
I would appreciate it if anyone would share information with me in regards to this or at
least tell me where I might find supporting evidence, such as some type of historical
record-census, muster, etc. to document the above-proving or disproving the suggestion.
I am also curious about the spelling variations of John Chandler/Chaundler's name and
would like more information in this area as to the differences in spelling.
Thank you.
