I have been researching my oldest Chandler named Thompson Chandler.
Thompson was born in VA on February 20, 1811 - county unknown. I do
know he was married in Giles Co., VA (a county in SW VA) to a
Margaret Smith on July 25, 1831. I know a lot about Thompson from
this point forward and I have close to 600 descendants and spouse in
my data base. For the last several years I have been trying to
identify his parents by the process of elimination, i.e. study only
those who could possibly have been his parents. I have pretty well
eliminated most of the Chandlers in SW VA except for a possibility in
Patrick Co. VA which is located on the border of NC. There are
Chandlers just across the border in Surry and Stokes Co., NC at the
time of Thompson's birth, but he declared in several census documents
that he was born in VA. I do not know the answer yet, but maybe
someday I will.
The 1790, 1800, and 1810 US census records for Patrick Co. are
missing. So for that reason, I decided to check tax and other records
for Chandlers in this county from its beginning in 1791 and before
when it was a portion of Henry County. Last week I visited the
Fairfax County Virginia Library Virginia Reading room to see what I
could find. The tax records I sought were not available locally nor
available for loan from the U. of VA library. However, I found a
number of Chandler entries in various books. With the thought that
this information may be of use to you Chandler researchers not near a
library with VA documents, I decided that I would put my newly found
information on line for any other Chandler researcher that might find
a clue.
It is pasted below (about 5 pages). I hope it helps your search.
