Dear List:
This message is meant to correct information found in 6 RootsWeb
WorldConnect files under the name "JOHN TOBIAS CHANDLER." There was no
such person named John Tobias Chandler, although at least one submitter
has told me his genealogy can be found in LDS records (I searched and
found none for John Tobias, but there are 3 ancestral files and 25 IGI
for Tobias Chandler). While it is true his children were probably born
in Bishops Stortford (the present spelling for the place,) the St.
Michael's (Anglican) church register lists their baptismal dates, not
their birth dates - as was the general practice in England. Rootsweb
offers no formal means to correct erroneous information, so the
following simply permits an alternative genealogy to be filed in List
Archives. My interest in Tobias Chandler is that he is an 11th great
grandfather of mine.
The following genealogy is based upon a portion of a single source:
The New England Historic and Genealogical Register. Boston, MA: ©New
England Historic and Genealogical Society. Vol. 85[April 1931]:137-139
"Ancestry of William Chandler of Roxbury, Mass." by G. Andrews Moriarty.
The author obtained and published the MS of an individual who had
researched the church registry.
1. TOBIAS CHANDLER was born about 1551 in Bishops Stortford,
Hertfordshire, ENG. He was taxed on goods in the subsidy of 39
Elizabeth, the amount of tax now illegible in 1596/97 in Stortford. He
was churchwarden in 1598 in St. Michael's Church, Bishops Stortford,
Hertfordshire, ENG. He was taxed 8s. on goods valued at £3 in the
subsidy of 43 Elizabeth in 1600/1 in Stortford. He appeared as essoin
for Thomas Chandler, probably his uncle, at a court of the manor of
Pigotts on 1 Oct 1606 in Stortford. He witnessed the will of his
cousin, Henry Chandler on 9 Dec 1618. He signed a will on 20 Aug 1627
